I ended up with 36 bushel baskets off of 4 Boston pickler plants. for some reason I have always been able to grow tons of cucumbers.

Thank you Jeff. I live in an apartment with a southern exposure so am doing container gardening. Hot and sweet peppers and some herbs do very well. This is my first year with bush cucumbers and large cherry tomatoes and your information has been very helpful. I put the plant starters out first of May (I'm in Wisconsin) and end of June they have tripled in size. I plan to make your dill pickle recipe. Thanks!!

I have for several years now grown English Cucumbers from the saved seed from a previous crop. To do this, the best way is to leave the Cucumber on the vine in the garden until it turns completely YELLOW. Then pick it, slice it in half, use a spoon to scoop out the seeds, wash the seeds in fresh water and then allow them to dry on a coffee filter. The plump seeds will germinate and produce more fruit

That is how we do it too. Let it get good and yellow.

Thanks for the info about the varieties of cucumbers. I'm up here in northeast Texas, so similar climate to you, very hot humid summers. But honestly, I think you're wasting too much money on all those fertilizers. If you have good soil and compost, and worm castings, all you need is some epsom salt, which is cheap. I grow tons of fruit and veg, composting in place and adding worm castings and leaf mold. I fish and bury the carcasses throughout the garden deep enough to keep critters from digging them up and mulch deeply with leaves or wood chips, whatever I have on hand. I water with worm tea with some epsom salt added and that's all I need. I supply our family, friends, neighbors and the local food bank. I'm retired and try to live frugally. In November, I cover what beds will be left to rest during the winter with shredded leaves and wood chips. Then they're ready to go come spring. Happy gardening.
@executivegardener6 жыл бұрын
This is the problem, our soil stinks. It is clay soil. I do use good compost, but I don't mind adding the additives to the soil for the production I get. Sounds like you have a good thing going there.
@kater40526 жыл бұрын
I only grow in raised beds or containers. Either way I start them with a layer of rough wood chips, small limbs, cardboard, etc, then add kitchen scraps that I have prepared using the bokashi style and any fish carcasses I may have, as I am an avid fisherwoman. I then top with quality soil. Once plants are a few inches tall, I mulch well with leaves or woodchips (whatever I have on hand). Every 2 or 3 weeks I water with worm tea with a bit of epsom salt added. This has worked very well for me. I had to retire much earlier than I planned due to health reasons, and as I have no pension and had to take early SS, I have learned to be frugal. BTW, I ordered some of the Titan F1 cuke seeds you recommended.

My pickle vine is full of pickles, but, they only get to about 1/4 inch, then just die! Why would that happen? I do manage to pick a few, but just enough for a salad. One maybe two every other day or so.

Hi Jeff! Nice looking vines you got going there! Thought about you just the other day and wondered what you were growing. Don't know how things are south of town, but north of town, we could use just a tad more rain. Afraid if we keep getting this small deficit, we'll go into drought conditions this Summer. Thus far, weather's been so much better than the last few years. Be sure to post video of you munching on some of those pickles you make!

Will do, you just got a lot of rain last night I thought.

Best way is to till and pull them. I would stay away from chemicals like roundup.

Cover in a thick layer of cardboard, then wood chips, in areas where you'll be planting dump tons of compost, repeat seasonally. In walkways, more wood chips. No tilling, low cost. You could cover with a giant blackout tarp, but who has those?

I have been watching your channel recently and I really enjoy it. I have been planting Boston Picklers for years. I have decided to try the Titus variety in a hydroponic set up. My question is how old should my plants be when I set them in the hydroponic buckets? I have always bought my plants.

@executivegardener6 жыл бұрын
Hmm. The only reason cucs would be that color is they are left of the vine too long and are past ripe. The heat will cause your zuccini to put out all male flowers. Try planting sooner in the season next year or the fall.

Pollination is a weird thing, You would think the plant would just make it so it could pollinate itself, The need for a Bee to transplant something from one of its flowers to another in order for it to grow something seems incredibly mad when you think about it. The plant has everything it needs, Its almost like asexual reproduction yet it doesn't go as far as just growing so one flower has both male and female parts and self pollinates, It needs a bee for it. What a weird world we live in filled with many bizarre series of events that need to take place for things to work.

if you have 80% female flowers how do they all get pollinated? i would think not having but 20% male would leave less pollen to go around so there would still be quite a few that did not get pollinated. there are not many bees here so i am having to hand pollinate and should i go with a variety with 80% female flowers i would not be able to pollinate more than about half if that.
@executivegardener6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what to tell you, but it happens. My harvest is 6 fold.
