Cucumber peelings have massive cucumber flavor. I know a lot of people peel the skin off and just compost it. Home grown (non waxed) cuke skins make great cucumber water. Before you Chuck them in your compost pile, put them in a pitcher, add a few torn mint leaves if you have them, cover with water and set in the fridge for like half a day. It's amazingly refreshing after an afternoon of weeding. 😀

Hi, Kevin. I just wanted to tell you once more how much I appreciate your videos. I follow a very select few gardening vloggers (you, Harvey Ussery, Doug and Stacy, and Self Sufficient Me) who know what they are talking about and communicate it well. When I watch yours, I feel like I am back in college because of your well researched and well presented information. I very much appreciate your educated usage of the English language (it is sometimes hard to take seriously a vlogger who butchers the English language). You make me feel like you have done your homework and you present the information in a manner that is so easy to follow. I am an education junkie, and I consider you one of the finest educators I have had the honor of studying under.

My garden is set for this season, but I had to share this story. 2013 we had moved to Georgia from Arizona. I was and still to this day ALWAYS blown away by the beautiful foliage and atmosphere here. I planted my very first "garden" all five gallon buckets and over two dozen of them. Yeah, my exuberant appetite to become a gardener overwhelmed my common sense. I planted a number of things, most didn't work because I was so new, I had no idea what I was doing. But the cucumbers. SWEET BABY JESUS... I couldn't keep up with them! I was coming out every day to dozens of cucumbers, but because I couldn't keep up, I was getting cucumbers that were overgrown to the size of FOOTBALLS! No joke. Huge, swollen monstrosities the size of a small dog. Next season I will be planting them again but shall we say....with a great deal more knowledge and a LOT more restraint. 🤣 Love your channel so much and I spend hours making notes. There may be hope yet for me!😁

I started my first garden this year. I planted a bunch of seeds. Some of the seeds were out of date so I over seeded for the best odds most took….but the cucumbers! The space master cucumbers just shot up and I have nearly 40 individual cucumbers plants. I think I’m gonna roll with the chaos to see how well they all do 😂😂 Family and local Food pantries will be happy 😆

Yes!! When my current neighbors were looking at the house across from mine last year, I was harvesting a TON of cukes. It was like they had all come in at once. The guy was like....dude, that is a massive cucumber! Lol!! I just laughed and waved, but took great pride in my massive cuke. Lol! I love making lime pickles. They sound gross, but they are THE BEST! I actually used my grandmother's pickling crocks to make them last year! They tasted just like hers. I was so proud! ❤🙂👍

It seems like every day you're answering another of my questions! After not gardening since I was a kid, I went full blown container garden for my 'Pandemic Patch' because the amount of work needed to get my soil ready for planting would have been monumental (actually it's just dirt, soil would be too kind a description for the stuff under my feet). I'm trying to focus on one or two topics a day to avoid being overwhelmed or falling down the KZbin rabbit hole. Today's topic is "How do I trellis cucumbers and zucchini?". Thanks for making it a "one stop shopping" experience!

Cucumbers dont like their roots disturbed so the best way is to start them in a biodegradable pot that can be directly planted in the ground. But if this is not the case be sure to keep as much of the dirt around the roots to stay intact.

I'm growing marketmore, straight eight, lemon cucumber, and white wonder cucumber all great looking cool cucumbers. I pruned them heavily because I want them to focus on growing upwards my trellis. And they don't mind it I only pinch off the suckers growing in between the leaves while leaving the flowers and tendrills untouched. So I end up leaving only the main stem and there big healthy leaves.

Here's my experience with container gardening on a patio, and my cukes: I have a couple long wooden rail hanger style planters that came with the place. They were originally mounted on the top of the privacy wall that was around the patio. I took the fencing down, as the yard had a fence around it, and we no longer had a hot tub on the patio. I placed the planters on the southern edge of the patio, and hung trellis netting along it, from the fence posts I left in place. I start each spring with peas in the planters, sewn very thick. Once I've harvested, I let the peas dry enough that I can harvest seed peas, then chop up the whole plants and mix it into the soil mix. At that point, I transplant the long english cuke starter plants into the long boxes, and I always get a large harvest, provided I stay on top of the powdery mildew (I use a dilute baking soda spray as a prophylactic). Of course, I mix in organic slow release ferts when I'm digging in the pea straw.

This is the second year I've tried growing cucumbers in containers and I'm not having much luck, except for my cucamelons. I've noticed on all my other cucumber plants, squash plants and melon plant that there's only male flowers. They have regular water and I'm doing a foliar feed. Last year I had a good squash yield, this year nothing. However, even though I planted when I was supposed to, our weather has been weird. We've had hail three times since May 19th. So my plants took a beating. Gonna try to start over, see if I have time before the season is over. Thanks so much for your tips. Your channel is one of my favs.

Hi! Your channel is what made me start gardening on my backyard. It's especially therapeutic during this WFH period. I sowed seeds in containers and they just started sprouting. The diluted milk works a treat on powdery mildew. First time I had it was this year. Removed the few worst leaves, sprayed the rest. Took two applications about five days apart. The PM was not on the cucumbers though, but on the pumpkin and cantaloupe. The cucumbers were basically finished by that time. I grow mine hydroponically, and they tasted perfect (kratky method). They also grew HUGE. I actually had way too many cucumbers, and the chickens got a fair bit esp during the hot days (good water content). Anyway, they are super easy to grow. Trellis is the main thing, I happened to have very wide mesh, and used that.

I’ve been dealing with powdery mildew on my squash, tomato, and cucumber. I didn’t have them pruned quite enough so a lot of it was affected before I could do anything. Absolutely chop any leaves that are affected first. Otherwise it spreads really badly to other plants and faster on the plant the mildew is on. Since I removed all affected leaves and am spraying it every 4 days to keep the mildew away, (with a 50/50 milk and water mix), I haven’t had a recurrence.

Cukes and dill. (maybe a pinch of tarragon) Done! Was checking my cukes last year when I saw my first hummingbird on the other side of the trellises. Blood meal is nothing but N. Other tip, the trellis needs to be thin. Those 3/4" inch or 1" ( 19mm-25mm) inch stakes won't let it grab. I've used repurposed wire shelving in the past. This year left over electrical conduit and some chicken wire..

I got one lemon cucumber from my plant last year- the only cucumber I successfully raised. I enjoyed it, too, just a pleasant, refreshing mild lemony flavor that was nice on a hot summer day. This video is helpful- I'm trying to grow several cucumber plants this year, we'll see if I can do better than one fruit, lol.

@@Jamberlyn I so hope you get loads more than one fruit! I love how you described the loveliness of your one cucumber. I'm new to gardening and I"m trying to grow these as well. The only reason I even new about and got to taste one is because a coworker grew them and brought them to work. This was a few years ago and I've been craving one ever since.

Very nice little video. I only started gardening this past fall, and I've got some cucumber (bush variety) going right now. Thank you for the tips!

My grandma is a fan of apple cucumbers, they're an Australian heirloom variety that are apparently they're on the more old-fashioned side, but I think they're great! I'm hoping to grow them at some point if I get enough room!!
