Low-head dams such as White Dam on the Middle Oconee River dominate many waterways across Georgia. While they were used for power production a century ago, today many sit unused. Removing them not only reduces hazards they pose, but also increases water connectivity for habitat and recreation. Here, we explore the process undertaken to remove White Dam and restore connectivity, while also creating a template that can be used for additional dam removals in the future.
