About the game:
Instruments of Destruction features an advanced physics-based destruction system. You can demolish every structure in the game piece by piece. In addition, every object you see in the game world--save for small decorative plants and rocks--is part of the physics system. Each element of the world interacts with each other and together they create a physical, visceral world to play with.
Build Your Vehicle
Build a vehicle your way, with an ever-expanding array of parts and pieces. Using an intuitive vehicle construction system that also lets you customize your vehicles' appearance and controls, you'll always have fun creating your next awesome invention.
From simple splitters to advanced joints, a variety of parts slowly unlock as you play through the game, and each unlocks countless new possibilities.
While some vehicles will perform better than others in accomplishing your objectives, it's always a bit more fun to get creative and go a little off script. Optional bonus challenges and objectives will reward more creative builders and add more replayability.

Gear speed calculation: We have gears with 12 teeth connected to 18 teeth gears. The gear ratio is therefore 18/12 = 1.5. You have 15 gears chained, so the total ratio is 1.5^15 ~= 438. In other words, for the first gear to do one rotation, the last one has to do 438 rotations. The angular force needed is also multiplied by 438 (the force irl is generated by friction with the bearing, and air resistance which might be relevant at those speed. In IoD, I assume only friction is the realistic force, but the inaccuracy of the physics calculation probably also add a *lot* of forces against the rotation).

You need a flywheel, something like a clutch to disengage the gears, a system to prevent counter movement from the gears. You can build them on more than two axels to prevent gear slippage(I think the game doesn’t know how to interpret this physics problem and just phases the gears)

The way gears are programed in most games is like they are a bunch of lines coming out of a point, and there is a high force being emited from those lines, up to a certain distance(half of the gear's tooth with). If that force is exceded, the teeth phase through eachother. Wheels are similar, as they are a cilindric force(of wich the radius is the same of the wheel) coming from a point. When it is exceded, they phase into the ground

I think it has a problem to do with the meshing of the longer-toothed gears. It looks like they hardly had enough room to properly clear the small gear and were wedging a little on exit from meshing. I guess you never did this with Lego.... :) If you add a flywheel to the last gear, it will eventually become easier to turn, but harder to stop. That is essentially what you had; power stored in the gears.

Fun fact, not so much for those who hate math, but gears are highly mathematical, in many cases gears are best created with a prime number of teeth, because the torque to speed is based on the ratio of teeth between one gear to another, as such if both gears are say, even, the ratio of torque to speed is rendered in the smallest numbers it can. A 16:8 ratio is just a 2:1. But say it's a 13:8. It's always 13:8 So depending on how easy you want to math it out, or how efficient you want your gearshift to be, you can use different ratios to turn torque into speed, or speed into torque.

I'd like to point out that the times the last gear looked like it was going backwards is actually a visual quirk. In video games it's usually a lack of fps, but it happens in real life too. Ever watch a car drive by, you might notice the wheel appears to be turning backwards. That's telling you our brain doesn't compute fast enough to see every frame of it going forward, so we see frames in just the right sequence to look like it's going backwards.

17:39 you have to count the gear tooth. say the small one has 10 tooth and the large one has 20 tooth, that would be an ratio of 1/2, meaning that 1 half revolution of the large gear translates to 1 revolutions of the small gear. and that 1 revolution on the large gear translates to 2 revolutions on the small gear, 2 on the large gear 4 on the small etc etc. with each step you would double the rpm (and halve the torque).

18:30 that sometimes happens to gears irl too, though maybe not that much but if you apply the torque on the source, it takes alot of time for the last gear to spin, Once it spins , Its gonna keep spinning until all of those force in that time its not moving is spent. The game's physic also did this. Just saying its possible for that to happen in real life and not a random game bug.

So, if the bigger wheel is the driver wheel (gear) and smaller one is the driven by, that means multiplication, so, your big gear have 18 teeths and smaller one have 12, so the ratio between them is 1.5 . So, considering that all steps are equal to 1.5 we just put 1.5 to the power of 15 which is 1.5^15=437.893 (round to 438) So, gear ratio you make here is 438 over 1, basically last gear needs to rotate 438 times until the 1st gear finishes one revolution :D By the way, it is easy to calculate multiplication gears, for example if we have gear box like this (3:1, 4:1, 5:1) we can just multiply each individual gear ratio from each gear set stage, and by doing so on the example we will get total ratio to be 60:1 {3x4x5 = 60}. Same apply to your gear box {1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 = 437.893} or just simply 1.5^15=437.893

There's only two sandbox games that have gears, Instruments of Destruction happens to be very similar to Besiege, just a little more on the modern-futuristic side compared to the medieval style of Besiege. Besiege though is many years older and updates are far and few between nowadays so IoD is very refreshing for someone like me to get that besiege feel. So I'm actually a big fan of this, having been a long time besiege enjoyer. And with the, admittedly still experimental, destructible vehicle option, it makes me feel right at home. edit: though making gear chains in besiege is better and easier.

Instead of powering a big gear first (1 rotation of the powered gear= multiple rotations for the unpowered ones), you could do the opposite and power a small gear (1 rotation of the powered gear = a fraction of a rotation for the unpowered ones) and try to create a GOOGOL gear (which has 100 gears all connected with a 1:10 gear ratio, which means for the 100th to do 1 full rotation the first will have to do 1 googol aka a number with 100 zeros)

Any game with gears should simplify the relevant calculations down to only calculating the ratio, speed, and velocity of each gear, rather than trying to calculate the actual collisions. It may be more realistic of you can get enough frames, but when you're working with gears I highly doubt it's possible to get enough frames since the ratios scale exponentially

Pretty ridiculous that the developers of this game didn't take a moment to google "standard spur gear dimensions" or the like, to check how a gear's tooth have to be shaped, so that it transfers force as perfectly as possible without shredding itself. Their "some sticks on a wheel gears", or however you would call that, would in reality scratch and break teeth quickly, even with just two gears, if you go a normal speed.
