These shop tours might be my favorite content on KZbin. I'm a big proponent of the apprenticeship programs. I work in academia, where costs are going up and the value is going down. Great to see Grob adding not only monetary but also educational value to Bluffton, OH.

I had the chance to visit Grob in Bluffton, OH in1992 while being a trainee at National Machinery in Tiffin, OH. I am every impressed by the level of technology employed in the factory. The guide leads the tour and explains all machines with ease and accuracy; he's a great technician who captures the visitor's attention. Thank you for publishing such a great professional movie.

Good to see companies in the US stepping on to such apprenticeship programs. In Germany such vocational education of 3 years is required for many jobs.

I did a mechatronics apprenticeship (IHK) in Germany and the setups are very similar to the one's I trained on and played with. Although I studied afterwards and haven't worked in that profession professionally in a while, it did help a lot with getting a general understanding for machining, industrial machines and electronics. But I sometimes miss making chips or wiring and programming machines.

Great factory tour John, as always! Thank you for bringing us along :) Just to clarity: the culture of guided and standardized apprenticeship is not unique to Grob but they do it certainly on a very high level. But this is basically what you expect in industrial companies in germany/austria/switzerland.

It still amazes me that these cnc machine especially 5 axis sling all that steel around with the material attached that needs to be machined and stop exactly where it's programed so the tool can start eating metal. I don't know maybe it's me watching all that steel moving with momentum and stop exactly where it knows and still achieving tolerance.

3 PID loops inside the servo controller. Torque (current), velocity and position. That's how you get there

2:11 talking about German influence: "Schröder", very common German name (Schröder/Schröter is a guy who loads beer/wine barrel onto a truck or ship) :-) Many of my friends work at the Grob facilities in Mindelheim, Germany. The company is one of the iggest employers around. Really amazing technology they develop there.

I think it‘s funny that there‘s a high precision tool manufacturer called GROB („rough“, „crude“) and a handtool manufacturer (think angle grinders and stuff) called FEIN („fine“, „precise“) in Germany. 😄

I believe it's actually Gross, the funny looking B is short for two S's in Germanic languages, the same way that two dots over a letter (umlaut) would indicate two of the dotted letter, you'd have to ask Stefan Gotteswinter though.

Second layer of fun is if you say GROB in Russian. it means literally COFFIN ) but if I say ГРОБ about a piece of equipment it will be understood as big, heavy, bulky. which in these case makes sense. Thank you for the interesting video!

I'v just started my apprenticeship back in November doing CNC machining in the UK, I work on a 30 year old bridgeport 3 axis mill and somtimes on ecomills. Where I work we have some grinders both manual and CNC, I thought they only come with the table going side to side 11:50 never seen that in my life holy cow.

The apprenticeship system is a very german way of doing things. Pretty much standard to groom most of your staff in most companies. It's awesome.

Looks fascinating! For us a 5-Axis CNC machine provides infinite possibilities as to part sizes and shapes. It allows us to process five sides of a part in a single setup, moving across the X, Y and Z linear axes as well as rotating on the A and B axes. This allows for higher part accuracy because the work piece does not move across multiple workstations.

AMAZING...We're all looking at a multi million dollar investment ...at a guess 250 million - maybe 1 billion US - really got no idea...can't be too many of these around. An equal measure of value is all the intellectual knowledge involved from the creation boffins to very much the actual makers...superb video. All that 'we do everything' is definately paying of...note to self - no swarf anywhere to be seen...

The German Headquarter is 30 Minutes away from me. We allways joke about their name 😂 Fein (orange power tools) means fine in english, does the heavy duty grindig, drilling and cutting stuff, and Grob means rough , does the ultra precision stuff 😁
