Lots of good times I'm sure. Where were you located then? Any bands we may have heard of? That's about the time I was getting serious about playing music. I have a bunch of old analog gear, as well. I'd love to hear more about your time in the biz.

@@TomandJulieMineExploring: I formed my first and only band in 1971. Honestly I don't remember what we called ourselves. Our very first gig was at our high school Cafetorium (Cafeteria / Auditorium), which is the same exact place Jerry Garcia played his first live gig. That's when I realized I DO NOT like being on stage, so quit my own band and became the soundman. I worked mostly with local bands that I'm sure you never heard of, with names like "Assault & Battery" and "Rock America". I helped build, and worked in, several recording studios and worked with a lot of bands. But to be honest, between all the drugs and alcohol, then having brain surgery and five strokes that crashed my brain, I don't really remember much. I had to teach myself to read, write, and speak all over again, all by myself without help. It was years before I remembered much of anything prior to that, like my childhood. People tell me stories of things I did back then that I have absolutely no memory of.

We have never done a gear review although maybe it's time to do one. I know most mine explorers wear blue jeans, but we rarely do. That's partly because we are often hiking a long way to get to the mine site and jeans are not very comfortable or breathable to hike in. Jeans also have limited and tight pockets to stow gear in. I usually opt for the toughest nylon convertible pants that I can find. North Face makes my favorite with plenty of pockets for a camera and other small gear, plus, removable legs from the knee down (convertible). Thanks for the great comment, Brian! 👍👍

Tom & Julie -- @3:44 - ''It looks like something was mounted here.'' -- Yes , it was probably the Depth Indicator mounted on a pedestal , which was driven by that small chain . @7:29 - That Eimco 12B Rocker Shovel is missing the large (and Heavy) Cast Iron Counterweight . --- One of my first jobs Underground at American Borate Co.'s Billie Mine in Death Valley, CA was to go down with my work partner and put the Counterweight back on a 12B (the bolts had vibrated loose and fell out) . --- < Doc , Miner for over 50 years > .

@@TomandJulieMineExploring -- Tom , @0:38 - If you look closely , there is NO indicator showing on that Hoist . A Depth Indicator is an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE on a Hoist , because the Hoist Operator cannot see the Level landings , except that one immediately in front of him . --- On the 12B that I worked on at the Billie , the 12B Counterweight didn't go anywhere , it just fell off , these things weigh several Hundred Pounds . The problem was that my partner had recently had Hip Replacement Surgery and walked with a very pronounced Limp and was physically unable to lift any weight over 20 Pounds . When we got down and saw the 12B , I called the Surface on the Mine Phone and had them send down a bunch of Cribbing . Using the Cribbing and a length of Drill Steel as a Pry Bar to create a fulcrum , we got the Counterweight into an upright position against the back of the 12B . Then using the stacked Cribbing we were able to lift the Counterweight straight up to within 3 Inches of the bolt holes , -- but we had used up all of our Cribbing . I put the new bolts in the upper holes in the Counterweight and told my partner that I was going to lift the Counterweight but I would only be able to hold it up for about 30 Seconds . I got into a squatting position and carefully positioned my Knees directly under the bottom of the Counterweight , while holding onto the back of the 12B . When I lifted with my leg muscles and using my legs as the fulcrum , I told my partner to slam the bolts through the holes and get a Nut on them as quickly as possible . We got the Nuts on both bolts and I was able to relax my legs . Then it was just a matter of installing the rest of the bolts and tightening everything down . --- < Doc , Miner for over 50 years > .

@ 15:45 the reason the airlines look oily is the silver looking, bulbous fitting in the right, center of screen. I forget the name of it, but it would lubricate air powered machinery by continuous oiling. As the air rushes through it picks up a little bit of oil. Remember, the air is pretty hot and helps mix the lube.
@TomandJulieMineExploring3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input on this, Benson. I realized these were all pneumatic lines later on after I looked back at the video. Having run some air powered tools I remember putting a few drops of oil in the tools periodically. I don't remember seeing an automatic oiler before so that's pretty nice.

Yes, it is a talc mine. Plus, it's our favorite talc mine, and very dangerous to get to the places you see in this video. Thanks for watching, Dave.

Can't make any profit off of mine if everything's overhead only one worker..... I graduated high school the year that mine was shut down.

I was in 10th grade in '72, just a couple years behind you. Thanks for the comment, David!

It's fun to think about what you were doing in a certain year. I was in high school at that time. This is one of our favorite modern mines. Thanks for the comment, Carl!👍😁

I’m a union electrician I’ve been doing electrical work for 45 years it’s hard to imagine when you don’t see wires.

I suppose that could be difficult for you. Many times when I'm in an old anandoned mine I will try to imagine the sounds of the equipment running and the miners yelling orders between each other while trying to get the job done.

Also I’ve worked on overhead cranes and most of them the brake needs power to release it in other words when you turn power off the brake engages. Fail safe.

That system makes good sense.

Nothings hooked up there’s no wires! That’s an old resistor bank they probably ran the hoist on DC.

I agree, they don't appear to be hooked up. Thanks for watching and commenting, Cleason!

Well, you might have to use your imagination a little. Thanks, Cleason!
