❓ What’s the difference between a narrow boat and a double boat as far as what canals you can travel? Maybe like percentage of overall canals you can travel on with a wide beam boat, and also percentage of popular canals that you can still access in a wide beam boat? Because I know there are a lot of very narrow canals but I don’t know how many there are or if they are actually popular.b

That’s a great boat , when I lived in the UK my back garden used to lead straight onto the Grand Union Cannel towpath . I loved the cut it was like walking into the countryside when living in London . If I ever had to move back to the UK my first choice would be a wide beam . I couldn’t ever live in London again , it was bad enough then , by the looks of things it’s got a whole lot worse . Best regards from Vietnam 🇻🇳

Unrelated, but the trawler moored behind your uncle's boat looks like a Grand Banks 42. These are stunning boats, incredibly seaworthy for their size and suitable for coastal cruising.
@widebeamadventures34854 жыл бұрын
The previous owner is now living on that boat - they aim to taker her out to sea.
@AndreasDuessca4 жыл бұрын
@@widebeamadventures3485 What fun, that's what they are built for, extended coastal cruising. Fuel burn of the Lehman engines at 9 kn cruising speed is only around 2-3 gallons/hour, so range is not an issue for as long as you don't push them. Here in Canada, people take them all the way to Alaska for the summer, down to Mexico in winter. On the East coast, they go all the way to the Caribbean and beyond. I suspect that in Europe you could easily take one to the Med. They make brilliant liveaboards. My wife would love one, but for me, the sails are missing. Out of curiosity, what's the fuel burn rate per hour on your widebeam?
@CruisingAlba4 жыл бұрын
Hey Andreas our engine is a little smaller (43 hp) and we roughly use a litre of diesel per hour of running in neutral. Going 3-4 mph on a canal is probably not much more (but we don’t know exactly). Sorry can’t be more specific
@AndreasDuessca4 жыл бұрын
@@CruisingAlba That's about what my boat used to burn, when I lived on a narrowboat. About 1-2 litres per hour, depending on wind and water.
@thebeardedseeker56334 жыл бұрын
very nice boat. after watching so many narrowboat vlogs i've decided that i think i'd feel claustrophobic on a narrowboat, so i'd get a widebeam instead. even though that means i couldn't cruise the entire system. though my favorite of all are Dutch Barges. 😁

Hi Keith not sure exactly but the deal is with all of those appliances... when something is power hungry but you only use it for a couple of minutes a day, its doesnt take that much energy. Fridge etc is 12V etc washing machine can be run when moving or running the engine. So you’ll always find a way 😊 Colin and Gin are in a marina for the first winter getting used to living on a boat so they have a few extra appliances they brought from their house. I can see the attraction of a widebeam, but my first question is how does it really differ from a nice flat? I live in a smaller square footage than that, and I'm sure I wouldn't feel as much at home as I might on a narrowboat. Still, it's interesting to compare.
@jinnytruman72994 жыл бұрын
Main difference is that you can travel in it!
@widebeamadventures34854 жыл бұрын
You're right - its got a similar feel to a flat - but it's a flat you can travel around in. We can access the northern and southern networks so plenty to explore. We love narrowboats but wanted something that was an easy transition from our house and can accommodate our children when they visit.

It's really only the midland network that's problematic for wide beams. We can access the northern and southern networks no problem there's the occasional 56 foot lock but you can apparently access diagonally - so plenty to explore over the coming years 😊

Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Bails. Had looked at it on the York Marina website earlier this year as I have been considering buying a wide beam for Mrs Mead and I. It’s a beautiful wide beam and Miles Uncle and aunt seem like a lovely couple who I’m sure will have fantastic times in their new home. Recently we viewed some wide beams in person (for the first time) and it was a bit daunting. When you see them “live” they are sooo big. I’m really concerned about my ability to actually steer them. How are the new owners getting on and what advice would they or you give to someone with concerns for manoeuverability? Lovely presentation as always. 👍✅

Thank you 😊. We've had a baptism of fire on the River Ouse - as Myles says in the video, it's a lively stretch of water. The boat is really well balanced and responsive. Bow thrusters help.
