Incredible Fall / October Garden Tour!

Got my fall/winter garden going and my seeds have sprouted! So happy! Carrots, beets, lettuce, turnips, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, so many things! This is my main growing season here in the south where it’s too hot to grow much all summer. Now is the sweet spot where everything wants to grow grow grow! I love it so much! It makes me so happy! 🥰It’s my busiest gardening season truly. I’m not mad about it. I try to squeeze every last crop out of the garden this time of year. No downside, the temps are moderate to cool, the insect pressure is lessening, the rainy season starts going again…all good things meaning less work for me except for all the harvesting and preservation of course. 😉

I'm an old man, meaning my parents came of age during the great depression. My parents spoke many times about preserving food right out in the garden, granted those were specific crops mainly root crops. I think it may be time to make this information more prevalent. Luke you must live on top of a rising magma chamber or something, I'm in north east ohio a little south of your latitude and the fall zucchini I planted at the end of August just froze to death in the 23 deg night we had last week. Same thing every year almost. I refuse to do the greenhouse setup (tried it) because of the heat cost and I'm not moving to a warmer climate, that includes Michigan😄

First frost is coming this weekend to Western Oregon. If I'm not mistaken, it's two weeks earlier than expected! At least my summer garden is mostly done.

Here in the deep south, central Alabama, it is looking like the first frost will be Halloween, followed by a heavy frost the next day, and another light frost Nov 2nd. I'm going to do a clean up harvest for my pepper next Tuesday-then they are done. They won't survive 28F. Before then, I need to move my comfrey sprouts into the greenhouse. My turnips, Late Nagasaki Cabbage, Pak Choi, Kohlrabi, beets, and Yellow Heart Winter Choy should survive it without any problems. Half, or more of my Pak Choi will be harvested this weekend. I have cherry tomato plants that went in the garden in March. Got a great spring and early summer harvest and decided to see if I can get them through the heat of the remaining summer, (Zone 8B - Texas). It got up over 115 some days here. But they pulled through and now there are around 300 - 400 green cherry tomatoes on these plants and just today I got 2 ripe ones. I'm thinking by next week my windowsill will be getting overcrowded with them. As for woody beets Luke. I think them not getting woody has to do with your climate/location. Pretty sure that in the south it's very common for that to happen with the heat here.

I saved zinnia seeds this year. I was very picky about my keepers & experimenting with winter sowing & mulch w/questionable seeds. It isn’t a loss either way. They will grow or mulch that space, so win win.

Our temps in NC keep bouncing around. This week 80s, next week 50s🙄anyway it’s always good to challenge yourself and see what’s still growing as we head into winter. I am definitely going to overwinter some pepper plants so I’ll be looking for your video. Thanks for always challenging us!

My okra did the same thing...but we're about to get another cold shot... still hoping to save what's out there loaded with blooms and baby fruits that I so want to get a better harvest. Time will tell... 😊

I might be getting some fall eggplant myself too, I transplanted it at the wrong time of year and because of that it didn't set fruit at all all summer long but now that temps have cooled I might actually get 1 fall eggplant lol I'm sure my dwarf mulberry sapling is going to be happy too now 😄

There was swiss chard in my family's garden, and it was cold tolerant in winter, but when we let it grow all winter long, it wasn't dead, it was still alive and got bigger thicker taller. It gave us hard time to pull it out later, after hard working of rooting it up, we found the swiss chard wouldn't be edible because its stem became too thick almost woody, callous. It wasn't delicious at all. So we just brought it to a boil hoping if we could make it more flexible or soften but failed. We couldn't help discarding them all. Late fall or early winter might work. But if it's already passing the middle of the winter, even if the plants are quite resilient to harsh cold weather, at least it will be no good for your diet, saying from our own experience.

Hey, I'm growing fall eggplant also. I left them in the grow tray by my shed they were about 6" tall then. I planted them in the middle of September they are a little bigger than yours but they have several eggplants on them about 4" long and were flowering more last month. I'm by Lake Michigan just south of Holland. If you want some information on them so you have more data let me know. I can send pictures if it helps. I plan to leave them as long as they are growing this year.

Hi Luke! Cani still plant spinach? Zone 6a Northwest Indiana. Also my red veined sorrel is a second year plant from your seeds. It was infested with root aphids early fall. I dug them up to move them. I cleaned all the bugs off and replanted them. I wasn't careful when i dug them out! I had to hack at them lol! Anyway, they're thriving and there is one regrowing from the stem that i wasn't able to get out so now i have more! Very exciting! Also my golden zucchini did excellent. I just pulled them out and they were planted in May. The seeds were from you! Thank you for great seeds! Sorry so long lol

I have late season tomatoes and peppers outside and one Giant Crimson in the greenhouse with 7 tomatoes starting on it.. I planted some 2nd season potatoes this year and they did good plus a few volunteer potatoes that i missed earlier this season... keep up the good work!

We just didn't get enough water this summer. My garden was over by September. We tilled and have been burning leaves in it.

Arugula tastes and smells like Diesel fumes to me. I tried growing it and almost threw up when I tried it, and had to wash my hands thoroughly to get the smell off. I pulled them all up and didn’t feel bad at all. Only thing I’ve ever not been able to eat. So weird.

Planted my fall garden in here in Chicago land in August. Slugs ate almost all of my lettuce 9regardless of diatomaceous earth and coffee grounds), collards greens haven't grown an inch past 5", and kale refused to germinate. *sigh*.......but my bean stalks look pretty (no beans yet).

What does swiss chard taste like and do you eat the leaves or the stalks?

I think it tastes like a very sweet spinach. But the different colors have slightly different flavors and I prefer the white varieties for the sweetness (but plant them all because they're so beautiful and last well into the winter landscape in my region) You can eat the leaves and the stalks! It's not like rhubarb which has toxic leaf material. You can eat fresh or cooked and I prefer my chard wilted in butter with salt and pepper and a dash of malt vinegar. It's so good!
