While checking out a fire in Lake Station that I had missed a dark header was visible just south of Ridge Rd and I-65 then Gary toned out for a reported still alarm at 1331 East 50th Place. It was quite evident there was a working fire from where I was. Engine 5 being first on scene advised of a working fire in an attached garage to a 2 story frame dwelling. Thankfully there was a hydrant right by the fire and a water source was established. Multiple lines were stretched and the fire was brought under control without injuries. One exposure suffered damage and nobody was in the original fire building.

They did while I was filming the back of the building. Hard to set up 2 guys on a line, get a positive water supply, wait on your next due, and set a deck gun up all at the same time when it's a three man crew. I helped stretch the supply line because they were so strapped on manpower

They did use the deck gun, but used the handline to protect the exposure. The guys were trying to secure a positive water supply before firing the deck gun up. It was just 4 guys on the scene for about 3-5 minutes

They were protecting the house next door while the engine set up the deck gun and additional crews arrived on scene. 3 guys on an engine fighting a fire of this magnitude alone for a few minutes is hard

Nice video. A good teaching tool. I learned a valuable lesson, if manpower is short, hydrant in the area, and a big gaping hole into the heart of the fire, deploy a master stream before pulling a hand line.

I was once at a warehouse fire with conditions like this. Me and my partner were hitting it with (although uselessly) with an 1 1/2" line. All we had was a lone engine at that point and no water tenders/ tankers for some time. One of our captains was beside himself and came to us screaming "INTERIOR ATTACK !!!! INTERIOR ATTACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!". We just looked at him thinking ( I really don't need to tell you what we were thinking). heh When we turned back to the fire, the building had collapsed to the ground and we had never heard it. Had we listened to that Captain..........

@mabas21 Everything is in alignment for someone getting seriously injured or even killed. To lay off that many firefighters, longer burn times and having to work with inadequate equipment is all it takes. On the west coast a lot of departments are facing and experiencing the same problems. Everyone needs to be heads up and remember we all go home after a shift.

As far as the Blitz attack option. A 25 second blast at 600 gallons a minute would offload roughly half your tank water and might take some of the punch out of it. Then use the mobility of 1-3/4" lines to knock down exposures while your waiting for your permanent water supply. Once the water supply kicks in resume your big water operation. You need to be diligent to time the operation though so you don't drain your tank. Good video! It went out and everybody went home so another success!

Seems odd at first, but you can tell their goal was to protect the exposure which they did fairly well. If they were the first arriving engine it makes sense to pull the 1-3/4 to protect the exposure until they could establish a water supply and pull some bigger lines.

Did you see the leeward side? This was obviously the home of a hoarder. When this started I was thinking wow, that much fire in a residence? It must have smoldered for hours if not days and then everything took off. I wonder if you could print what the person doing the initial 360 was saying. I bet there were neighbors and family glad to see this go up, except for the obvious exposures. What kind of record did this person have with the city? Again, WOW, so much FIRE in a house!

@choclibar 1. Apparently there is three firefighters there. 2. since you don't hear any back up arriving till almost 3 minutes into this, I think it was good judgement on thier half to reserve what resources they had untill other companies arrived. the building is shot, cover your exposures till you get more troops.

That's exactly what I was looking at! Not only was he not wearing a helmet he also stepped into a house that was previously almost fully involved, which weakened it alot, he went into the structure with fire still visible without a helmet. Jeee I'm on a Vol. Dept., but we still no better than that. Safety first for all my guys.....
@tomavolese9217
@tomavolese9217 6 жыл бұрын
This house when is this fully involved, The best thing to do is to protect surrounding structures first, on the first due in Eng. Then the second due Eng. can start the main knock down with large water attack while they have a line laid into them.

I am not a firefighter, but it seems obvious to me that you use the resources you've got when you've got them, even if they're inadequate, not the resources you'd like to have when you'd like to have them. The big water arrived later - it would have been nice if it were there right off the bat, but that's not the first arrivals' fault. Would you rather they stood around and toasted marshmallows because 'this 1-3/4" line won't do anything'?

@amodernphoenix 9 жыл бұрын
Arkadia Moon You're exactly right. A deck gun with multiple hand lines would have been ideal, but they weren't on scene in the beginning, so the firefighters used what they had. That's why they focused on preventing a spread and didn't attempt to fight the actual fire. It would have been a waste of water and would have endangered the neighboring structures.
