Wow, what a trip out to the river! I suspect maybe those cod were on the move somewhere for spawning and maybe found a gentle place to lie up out of the current on the bank where the current runs a little slower. Bit of food gets washed past them once in a while and eventually they'd move on to wherever it is cod go. Awesome to see fish like that in the numbers they are. Back when I was young, I used to use worms as cod bait, but they were a particular kind of big bluish coloured earthworm in northern NSW and they'd be about a good foot long and a centimetre or half inch thick at their biggest, most were about half that. Never really figured out a species and they were uncommon outside of sandy-loam areas with a bit of clay in them, but fish loved them.
@robbiefishing2 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. WOW I reckon bigger worms certainly catch bigger fish. We get really large scrub worms here that are a popular Murray cod bait. I reckon your theory of them sitting their resting as they move upstream might be spot on mate, that's the best theory so far. It makes perfect sense to me.

Fishing a storm front has always had good results for me. Especially in warm saltwater. Then the Mangrove Jacks get angrier than usual (they're usually pretty upset about something to start with) and attack like rabid dogs. Fireworks also send fish nuts and I've talked to guys in the US who like to fish in Florida when there's a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral, as they'll bag out in minutes when the rocket fires up. Air pressure vs water is a funny thing.

Hi Robbie , Bob from Bairnsdale here, it was very interesting to hear you talk about barometric pressure , Dad used to tell the story of how he and Mum were fishing on the Anabranch not much happening, but they could see a big desert thunderstorm coming ,all of a sudden all hell broke loose ,Redfin biting like mad ,sometimes double hookups Dad was so busy taking fish off Mums line and rebaiting he had no time to fish ,they eventually had to take cover from the rain and lightning but after back to nothing ,Dad said it was the sudden drop in barometric pressure that set them off , any thoughts ?
@grahamwhittaker88442 ай бұрын
I’ve experienced this myself 👍👍
@robbiefishing2 ай бұрын
G'day Bob, I certainly believe that mate. I love fishing ahead of an approaching thunderstorm for that reason. The sharp drop in air pressure can often trigger a good bite. In saying that, to bake a cake you need many ingredients. Fishing is the same. The drop in Barometer might not work if the water is too cold in winter, or too hot in the middle of summer. If the water is too low in oxygen, or for whatever reason the drop in barometer might not work. Whilst fishing ahead of an approaching storm can be very good, it's not the silver bullet. We still need other factors to be right.

So what’s the difference between Murray cod n a trout cod? They look pretty similar to me
@robbiefishing2 ай бұрын
Hi Catherine there are many differences. Murray cod have mottles and are usually more of a green colour. Trout cod have spots and are usually more of a silver/blue colour. The larger ones can sometimes be a bit more green though. Trout cod have a stripe through there eye, and convex forehead and an overhanging upper jaw. Murray cod have the opposites to those features.

Hi Leigh, Murray cod lay sticky tacky eggs on hard surfaces where they can stick. Usually hollow logs, rock etc... They then fan the eggs to prevent any slime or algae building up on them. It is hard to imagine them every being able to lay eggs on sand.

Hi Robbie. We love your videos. Can you show us how you detect a bite - not very clear in the videos and how do you gauge when to strike. My strike rate is only about 40%, due to slower reaction times with that comes with aging

Hey mate. I think you might have been fishing in a cod spawning area, it’s the only explanation for there being so many fish in one small spot. What do you think?
@robbiefishing2 ай бұрын
G'day Glen, I think the whole river is a cod spawning area. Most of the rivers in the catchment are at this time of the year. Cod like to spawn in hollow logs, in cracks between logs and rocs etc. They need their eggs to stick to a hard surface. They can not spawn over sand, which is why I was surprised at the amount that I caught on this sandbar. I think they were just biting like mad ahead of a weather change to be honest. Those smaller cod wouldn't have been spawning anyway just because they're too small. I think it was just a case of being in the right spot at the right time,
