It's so cool to think about how all of this meshes together. The mechanical engineers come up with the machines, and spend a lot of time designing them to work reliably. Then skilled technicians make the machines and install them and make them work. And then the factory workers learn how to use them as effectively as possible. Beautiful.

I used to work around a Forging and heat treating shop. You could always tell when they were hitting big billets of nickel bronze with the steam hammer. We were across the water from Seattle and large billets would register on some of the UW seizmic sensors.

They might not make the completed parts at that facility. A lot of manufacturers don't do their own forging, but rather, they buy rough forgings from companies that specialize in forging and then machine them to their final dimensions.

I personally have ran a forge press making CV joint components that had a 3,000 ton capacity. We ran 10 lb billets and it ran at an average of 1,000 tons. It was a 4 process machine, just like the very first one.

It's so friggin cool that so much of the technology that makes the modern world possible is still run by a guy with a pair of tongs. there's no replacement for a guy with an apron jostling the part onto the die for forging

It's a lubricant so the punch doesn't stick to the hot metal. Probably something like graphite or coal dust.
