INCREDIBLE German Model Railroad, Made in India!

Dare I say, Abendstern Nebenbahn is one of the FINEST Model Railroads of the 21st century! This incredible creation by Vikas Chander has the perfect balance of fine scale prototypical accuracy, all around artistry across many aspects of miniature art and technological sophistication that is extremely rare to see in any private model railroad, and even in many public displays.
Vikas' Abendstern Nebenbahn might not be called 'grand' as it doesn't have the elevation of The Franklin and South Manchester, or the expanse of Hochschwarzwald, but just like most celebrated pieces of art that are often not big in size, this display wins your heart through its elegance and simplicity. This layout is the proof that you do not need incredible trstles and viaducts or two lerge helix or 3 different levels to build a masterpiece. With zero elevation throughout the layout and just one 8 inch long girder bridge over Fulda river, the 'specs' might look ordinary, but the moment you step into the layout room, you would know that this place is special in every aspect of realism. Not just realism in the individual models or the trains - but every single element that you can lay your eyes upon - the buildings and their interior, the tiny little human figurines, the track, the ballast, the grass and vegetation, the trees, the signals (oh! you have to see those signals with your own eyes, no video or photo can do justice to them), the streets, the street lamps, the vehicles... everywhere you look the essence of excellence oozes like Serge Luten's perfume! But it doesn't end with the models, no. It continues to creating an atmosphere using state of the art lighting technology, smoke generators to create visibility context and atmospheric sound spekers to bring everything to life - all of which are orchastrated by Train Controller which doesn't require any human intervention. So you get the enjoy unlimited railfanning from dawn-to-dusk and then from dusk-to-dawn while enjoying you favorite drink without having to press a single button anywhere

I just stumbled upon this incredible video. Vikas Chander is clearly a genius, but what is very obvious after watching this video is his diligence, which is completely out of this world. Choosing a German railway to model is also very appropriate given how obsessive German's are about precision. The Lionel layouts in my neck of the world seemed incredible till I saw this. What hobbies are popular in India?

Well, the concept of ‘hobby’ itself is quite novel here. Any hobby requires committing time and money (and in case of model railroading also space which means even more money), both are in short supply in an average Indian’s life. But for those who can afford it, you’ll find all sorts of hobbies here - philately, numismatics, reading and collecting books/comics, collecting antiques and such used to be quite popular. In our generation I have seen more people commit to photography, travel and related (biking, hiking, diving etc.), vintage cars (collection and restoration), gardening etc. Sports, especially Cricket as a hobby is quite popular too.

An ultimate layout with finest details. But makes me wonder what contribution hobbyist has made from his own seminal enthusiasm for the hobby. Each and every item/detail has been purchased from a hobby shop. Only contribution appears to be of arranging things - layout, building and other details- which are available on the net. I do not find anything original in the hobbyist's efforts to build this excellent model. I for one build my own passenger coaches, and other rolling stock. I only buy Engines and OO (Peco) railroad and turnouts. 😊

From your comment it seems that you haven’t watched the full video or at least paid attention to the details, or for that matter fully appreciate what it takes to build a high caliber model railroad. A model railroad is beyond just the trains, it starts way before even you drive your first nail home, and that is prototype research. Then comes planning which for an ambitious layout like this needs to be incredibly meticulous and accurate and includes all aspects of the project that spans over a decade. Then comes the stages of building it - durable benchwork, impeccable track work (many of the complex pieces of which are hand laid), building highly reliable circuitry that can handle complete automation, complex computer programming (which in this case controls much beyond the trains - it handles signals, atmosphere, turntable and time tables) and even after all this you still haven’t reached the scenery where most of it is completely scratch built to museum quality standards taking thousands of hours of work spanning many years. I respect your enthusiasm to build your own rolling stock (but going by your logic the fact that you’re buying the engines and tracks should also be questioned because why not build those by hand as well?), but calling this work mere ‘arranging things’ is being ignorant at best and not finding anything ‘original in the hobbyists effort’ demonstrates a lack of depth in the subject of model railroading itself. I hope you take this criticism with a pinch of salt and rethink your comment, and perhaps learn a bit more about the complexities of model railroading.
