When I was little, I watched these BR 18 waiting in Munich for the green light for Lindau on Lake Constanze. Even in their waning days following the year 1960 they aired some glory that was innate to them. Maffei´s engineers Anton Hammel and Herr Leppla had created a real beauty. What pleases me most about this loco is, that one of them, 18 478 ex 3634 is still running. She is the prototype of Märklin´s 18 478 that has been available for ages.

Wow that's good to know. Do you know where 18 478 is based? Would love to see the real thing

I have Cat# 63363 which is a model of 18 411 in early Ep 3a guise. They are lovely models. In real life 18 402 was damaged, designated 'Kriegsschaden' and was withdrawn in early 1949, on the other hand 18 411 had its last brake tests done in April 1950 so must have had some post war running...and finally made it to December 1950, when it was withdrawn from Hof. The models were actually from the 2000-2010 period and I not only got this one when it was on special, but also picked up the Wurttemburg C class (cat 63328) 18 112, again in Ep 3a guise, new, for 130 Euro in around 2006/7. Another lovely loco and excellent runner.

I have one of these locomotives and it is an exceptional runner, the shaft between the loco and tender is called a cardan shaft, alot of the european manufactureres use the same shaft system, not a big fan to be honest but it seems to help with the slow running, thanks for the video, i've started binge watching your videos, great channel.

What a beauty and something I would love to own. It should have a warning on the box like," for children over 50", lol. Great review and Happy New Year, Jersey Bill

Hello there, at 1.45, this is the pipe work that attaches to the steam input line for the air brake cylinder, effectively a cooling radiator. Regards from Australia.

Happy New year. Phoby von Phobenstein thinks the BR 18 is one of the "prettiest" steam engines. The Bayerisch liveries are nice too.

The Br18 aka S3/6 is kind of the European benchmark locomotive. It is more attractive in the older Bavarian green with all the exposed copper parts on the cylinder block

I thought it was a large model but I'm surprised how small it is, with such precise details.

I have a Roco flat car carrying a truck for a load. It came with the same plastic pieces your locomotive was packed with. For the life of me, I can’t remember how those pieces were fitted with the car in the box. 🤔🙂

Although not into steam myself, I do agree it's a stunning model. However, I do think you should have an oval of test track or if you have a layout, run it on there, as a little bit of track doesn't really show the motion of the locomotive off. Happy New Year and I look forward to more (especially German) model reviews.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah I struggle to get the lighting right outside this little ‘stage’ I have set up. I’m still experimenting to try and get it right. Thanks for watching!

I bet that would be a wonderful colour combo for this loco 👍

When a ROCO loco comes with a piece of display track it tells you this is a model with great detail. This however indicates some running problems and very small fragile detail. This model should have at least one pivoted tender axle bogie, also the wires between vehicles and the drive shaft is a source of resistance to running round curves.

I own 2 of those one Bayern depot Munich another DB depot Frankfurt but would love to have DRG as well ! It’s old ESu 3,5 Gen decoder so over the years may have some sound issues… otherwise great performer !

Very detailed lok, a lot of great fragile details, seems it was a new generation instead of old Roco Br18. But as usual Roco you need to teach it how to ride. First of all change motor to coreless with neodymium magnets by your own or use SB modellbau set, because Rocos sewing-machines is not for riding. Personally I do not like Roco so much because they do not paint loks very well (they looks plastic), for motors and a lot of plastic. Their products are very formalistic. You want lok? No problems, here you are, take it. Nothing warm and special. But they have nice silent gears, not always, like Br80, but mostly. And quite interesting modern construction instead of old school.
