Storm chasing in Montana with Tempest Storm Chasing Tours.
Music by Bobby Cole @Catch22 Media used with permission from copyright owner.
June 28th has to be the most incredible day I have had storm chasing. We started the day in Belle Fourche, just 50 miles from where we would later be watching an incredible supercell near Albion, Montana. After lunch in Buffalo, South Dakota and some time looking at data in Rhame, North Dakota, the decision was made to head back to Buffalo and then head west into Montana. We soon had a view of the developing storm more than 50 miles away and before long driving along good gravel roads we had arrived at our storm. The structure was already mind blowing! We stood watching the storm approach us for around 45 minutes before things started to ramp up a bit and the first tornado appeared. The first tornado lasted several minutes and was hidden by the rain at times. We didn't hang around long as the storm was just getting going with the tornado show. We jumped back on Camp Crook Road towards Capitol to keep up with the storm, it now had a huge lowered base on it and very quickly tornado number two begun. By the time we stopped, the tornado had taken on a beautiful classic tornado shape as it slowly moved across the open fields. We watched for several minutes then moved again to keep up with the action area. Once tornado two was over, things started to look a little more serious, the motion in the storm directly above and in front of us was unbelievable and the storm looked like it was about to produce a large tornado directly in front of us. By the time we had stopped tornado three was about to make contact with the ground and we stood and watched it become a fairly large wedge shaped tornado. We had a good amount of time just watching in awe as the sky made contact with the ground, we could even hear the tornado rumble as it moved across the fields. It was soon time to move again to keep up with the tornado along Camp Crook Road. As we drove along the road towards the storm what I saw in front of me was beyond mind blowing! The whole storm structure was spinning around the tornado like a small hurricane, I couldn't believe my eyes. This only lasted a few moments but it was enough to feel completely overwhelmed by what I saw. We continued to follow the tornado until it roped out in the rain and hail. Very soon after the fourth tornado started, by this time the sun had set and the contrast was quite low but we still enjoyed watching another distant twister on the open Plains. It was now dark and the storm was currently sitting over Road 20 between us and Buffalo, we sat watching the lightning waiting for the storm to move on a little before heading East to Buffalo. Before long somebody shouted Tornado!!! And there was tornado number 5 hidden in the dark only made visible by the frequent lightning. We all desperately tried to capture this incredible moment before it faded away, it felt quite surreal. Then the day was done, the storm was dying and the celebration dinner was calling. We drove back to Belle Fourche where we had started the day what felt like a lifetime ago, I got into my hotel room and set my bags down and suddenly felt completely overwhelmed by the days events. I said to myself out loud 'Did that really just happen?' Everything I had spent my days dreaming about as a young kid in high school had unfolded before my eyes. For real this time!

FINALLY! A chaser who gets it right! Thank you so much for paying attention to the entire mesocyclone, not just all close-ups of the funnel. And the lingering real time tripod shots... so haunting. If all of your stuff is this good, you just gained a huge fan.

@@TomTrott You're very welcome! I like to give credit where it's due, and usually with a few too many words thanks to my friend Sam Adams. Any thoughts on the upcoming winter El Niño and the coming tornado season? I get mixed messages trying to Google the subject. (Lie to me. Tell this tornado-thirsty soul it's gonna be another 2016)
@TomTrott

@@andie_pants I try not to look into data too much, although it can be hard to resist when you have a chase trip coming up. 2017 and 2018 have been pretty quiet so maybe we are due a busier year like 2016. Even quiet years like 2018 can turn out great for a chaser if you are lucky enough to be there for the few great moments.

@@TomTrott Yeah, and joking aside I actually very much enjoyed how 2018 encouraged my favorite chasers to focus on a wider variety of weather phenomena like Hank's hunt for sprites and upward streaming lightning, Aaron Jayjack with the hurricane, and MIke Olbinski with his breathtaking haboob timelapses. Going on a tornado tour is #1 on my bucket list, so maybe some day on down the road once I get my career and financial s--t together I'll be a customer. I'll do my best not to come down with Twistourette's Syndrome. "POWER FLASH! DEBRIS DEBRIS!!" Can't make any promises, though. :-P

Gorgeous footage - astonished at how well defined those structures were! I was in awe watching on a computer screen, so I can't imagine what seeing that irl would be like. You have my envy. The time-lapse footage was especially amazing, I think. I'm no weather expert but it doesn't seem to me that weather systems with such pronounced dynamics occur all too often. So I can't imagine that any scientists in the field _wouldn't_ want to get their hands on this footage. Take for example the upper-level in-flow jet seen from about 07:40 - 07:45... you can basically define its diameter and see the cylinder of air being pulled in. That's like something I might expect to see in a controlled experiment in the lab - too perfect! Something else noteworthy that caught my eye was that curious persistent structure at the leading edge of the storm, just on the other side of the upward sloping front, and hanging down from the clouds just there in front of the main body. You can really see it well from 02:19 through 02:29. What the heck is that thing I wonder? It's fascinating. One last thing, sorry. It's a bit of a complaint/critique, but I'll keep it short. Phenomenal video is easily devalued by atrocious audio. No amount of music will ever sufficiently subdue the sound of a blown-out mic being overloaded by wind and variable air pressure. It's beyond me to try and answer why no storm chaser has ever figured that part out. Logically, it's a simple equation: When there is a tornado nearby, it will be windy. AND when it's windy, crappy little microphones will be blown out. Therefore, if there is a tornado nearby, then your audio will suck. Symbolically, we see that: t → w w → x ∴ t → x I hope someday that somebody who knows how to capture audio will be invited to go along on a chase. Someone with the equipment and the know-how to use it so we can _really_ hear what those monsters sound like. That would be awesome..

Brother and I were biking the Mickelson trail in the Black Hills that day. We were leapfrogging our two vehicles; his was in Deadwood on the 29th. $12,000.00 hail damage to his car from hail storm. Many people lost windows and moon roofs too. We heard someone had a tractor carried from South Dakota and dropped in Montana on he 28th. They only found parts of it though.

Nobody is probably reading new comments anymore, but I'll weigh in anyway. FWIW, I've been a hard-core chaser since the early 1980's, and usually stay out in the main alley (not the Dixie alley) from the end of May thru all of June. This gets me back into my native Nebraska, the Dakotas, and southeast Montana. What gorgeous country Montana is! Anyhow....such magnificent footage here....I'm almost ashamed to make a suggestion or a tiny complaint. But for me.....when I'm on a wicked, tornadic storm....whether it produces or not.....what turns me on the most is the ambient sounds of what the wind is doing to all around me. We all know that far too many videos have guys screaming, cussing and acting like fools.....drowning out all that is unique to the tornadic winds of these storms. I've got to admit...I've been plenty guilty of this type of video-recording myself. Live and learn, and I've made my adjustment(s). Your storm here.....I can only dream of what sounds those powerlines would be screaming as the inflow went thru them.......as well as all the sounds of the winds going thru the wheatfields and other grasses there. I don't think most folks that watch these tornado vids really have a chance to crank up their volume and hear what insane madness exists around these bad-ass tornadic storms. I would hope that you might consider an "all-natural" sound environment IF you get the chance to film another gem like this one. The bottom line.....what a killer video, regardless!! Thanks for listening jbeinarizona

4:30 to 6:13 is the most majestic footage of a tornado I’ve ever seen. It’s as if it is both in contrast and harmony with the peaceful land around it. Do you have any still photos of it? It would make a great desktop background image.
