Context matters. People just assume they told nobody because nobody tried to come save her and her child. They almost certainly said something but the government wasnt gonna use the resources and manpower on that considering what was going on. Hitler invaded just months prior to this. Leningrad was completely surrounded by the Germans and starved into submission. Germans were on the march to Moscow and it looked like they would win the war there. The government needed all its resources and manpower available to win the war. Thankfully they did, barely. Starvation is the worst way to die. Anna Gureyeva was amazing and my heart broke for her ideal. I went through less than 0.1% of what she went through and I almost broke. Back in my youth, after a series of mishaps and bad choices, I ended up homeless and starving for a week. Sitting down on the street from exhaustion, I distinctly remember seeing a six foot tall, upright, bipedal, chimpanzee walking briskly passed me. While drooling with anticipation, I slowly pulled out my Kabar to hunt, and within 3 feet of stabbing distance, a kind Native man, strongly and gently, prevented me from doing the unthinkable and reminded me that it is not a beast but a human. He directed me to a place with meals and the rest is history. Even though this happened more than 2 decades ago, my memory still clearly remembers seeing a walking chimpanzee. Starvation causes intense hallucinations. It explains why many starving North Koreans, see their loved ones as animals to eat. I saw a chimpanzee and I cannot recall what the man looked like. My permanent memory for that time was me almost killing and eating a chimpanzee.

I was also wondering about this, partly because I wanted to get more information on the plane itself. It's a fascinating story, but a lot of the details seem off (plane makes a crash landing, on top of a mountain, with almost all on board surviving?), and I can find no information about it on English language internet. That said, it does not appear to be something Archie invented. Anna's name in Russian is rendered as анна гуреева , and if you check "Russian internet", multiple hits appear on both Google and Yandex. There are several more Russian-language documentaries here on YT, as well. (the plane was a Polikarpov-R5, for anyone wondering)

Yeah, I've heard a lot of these stories from this channel, others as well, I'm gonna just go ahead and say this is the hardest one to get through. If there wasn't actual historical documentation of it, i don't think you could convince me it wasn't a creepy pasta. Being completely abandoned, watching her baby die, having to feed her son with her baby, watching him die and letting him drink her blood to try to help him, having to eat his body after he dies. I wonder what kept her from laying down to die after her son died. She seemed to be considering suicide even before he died, but maybe it was her refusing to give up because of all the nightmares she had already been through, but with how sarcastically bitter she became, perhaps she refused to give up out of sheer spite. She also lived for so many years after that, even having children again. I wonder if she had some revelation from all that trauma, possibly the most nightmarish thing that a mother could ever go through, maybe she found something she thought was reason enough to survive, and even try to have a life again. I wonder if she ever knew why she kept going, if she ever told anyone, or maybe she wanted all of it to go to the grave with her.

I shook my head when their motivation for their expedition to the plane was for parts terrible. If it's true those guys said nothing about Anna and sashas survival and were still alive they definitely deserved going to prison but I really don't understand that part could it be they told people but the people didn't care who knows also if they went up to the crash site for parts it couldn't have been to difficult in good weather cause parts are heavy.
@dfuher9682 жыл бұрын
Ikr. Usually planes, that crash on mountains, are left there, coz its far too difficult to retrieve them. If they could trek up there and get various parts including the friggin engine, it wouldve been fairly accessible. Even taking into account the change from winter to "milder" weather, they absolutely shouldve been able to get up there and check. But no search at all, when the plane disappeared, nothing when 3 men staggered out of the mountains, only "oh yeah, we might be able to use some parts for the war". That alone, that it would be easier to get some maybe, possibly usable parts up on a mountain rather than producing new parts, tells me it wasnt a hard trip.

Ok I am confused a bit by the aircraft mentioned at the end. That aircraft is indeed a Polikarpov R 5. It is indeed given the designation number " 3316". An aircraft was restored matching its description. One problem: that model of this reconnaissance aircraft does not have a internal crew cabin. It cannot carry that many people. Correct me if I'm wrong but 3316 is at the Monino Museum in Russia. It had room for one pilot and one Observer. No other passengers. Now what could be possible is that this is a case of mistaken identity. An similar yet uncommon aircraft such as an Polikarpov Rafaelyants PR-5 seems more likley. It was in service at that time as well. A limited production version based on a modified design. It may not seem like much of a difference but if you put both next to each other on the tarmac you can see the major differences. Also the more standard R 5 models such as 3316 actually utilized a lot of wood in construction. Miracle anything at all would hold up in horrid mountain conditions after a crash. Which adds to this not being the plane in question. Not saying this story is false but think we have the wrong plane. Similar crashes with similar planes have happened in the USSR so it's not unheard of. Chilling story none the less.

The aeronautical numbers don’t add up! I’m a commercial airline pilot. The 1972 Uruguayan airplane accident did occurred, but the Uruguayan school rugby team was supposed to play in Chile and not in Argentina like you said in your video. The PLUNA airplane did fell in Argentinean territory though.

How absolutely heartbreaking and cruel. To be forced to watch your children die and then have to eat them... only to find out that your husband had remarried 3 months later. There are no words that can adequately capture the horror she must have felt. I hope the rest of her life was filled with love and kindness and that she eventually reunited with her sons. Awful.

Wow, that's some story Archie mate. These stories from Russia and the USSR are always so interesting. Her husband had remarried after couple of months, think she was better off without him. I mean having to eat your own kids is 1 thing, but giving up on your wife after such a short time...

Everyone was for themselves. The government cared more about their status than their own people. And honestly not surprised the men who went to get help didn’t mention the mother and children still in the plane.
@leattaleake875610 ай бұрын
This is such a tragedy and heartbreaking story. I can’t believe the men finally getting to the village and forgetting to mention they’d left 2 survivors behind. It horrified me as well as broke my heart when they had to eat the younger son and then she did the same with her older son after watching him starve to death. She was truly brave and strong. I’m glad she found some kind of life after her ordeal. But I’m sure she had nightmares for the rest of her life too.

This is a terse, tragic reminder. Granted most reading this are neither pilots nor plane owners. But we all drive automobiles. Basic survival protocols dictate that we carry equipment appropriate for surviving the environments we are traveling through WITHOUT the benefit of the automobile. Almost no one in America practices this. There are new tragedies almost every winter in places like Northern California, Colorado, New Hampshire and every summer throughout the desert states. Same thing in Australia re: the interior of that continental nation.

I am so happy Anna survived. She knew her husband was a pos and that he would remarry right away. The fact that the death of her children and their suffering didn't remain unpunished makes it a bit better.

"The Gate (pass) was closed" is an incorrect translation, translation as "clouded" or "obscured with clouds" would be more correct. The original Russian aviation technical term is "перевал закрыт" and means that the mountain pass through which an aircraft flying a route through the mountains is to pass, is obscured with clouds. Single engine propeller planes like the PR-5, Po-2, An-2 and other common Soviet bush planes were incapable of climbing too high, especially with large payload or passengers on board who could suffer from hypoxia. For this reason, it was common (as it was in the other parts of the world, such as in the Andes) to fly below the mountain tops following rivers and mountain passes. A pilot who encountered clouds in such an area was required to abandon the mission and return to the aerodrome because entering such a cloud bank would essentially force him to fly blind, which would end in a collision with the mountain or spatial disorientation, a spin and a crash

Russians are notoriously hard in hard times. That said, my jaw first hit my desk on hearing the men who made it to the village failed to mention Anna and Sasha. It hit again on hearing Ivan Gureyev remarried 60 days after the plane crash. THIRD hit--Anna had more children: I read somewhere women suffering traumatic emaciation can't reproduce because some tissue damage is beyond healing. The Soviets obviously thought her story made them "look" bad: Alternatively, they could have held Anna up as the most unbeatably badass mother-heroine of the war. I mean...amidst such horror and with her death approaching, Anna's worrying Ivan & Vladimir get their new caps and Varya gets his potatoes. Who's that scrupulous?!

Wow! What a story! I dabble in fiction writing; had I written something like this, nobody would have appreciated, let alone believed it. Sometimes reality beats fiction, and in this case by quite a margin. The incident speaks volumes about the kind of monsters in Beria's NKVD. Leaving a woman with two children without help in such a situation? One likes to believe that this strand of humanoids is extinct, but... I would have liked to get the gist of their defence at the trial.

@mariakelly9021011 ай бұрын
And your proof that this story is "not real" is what, exactly? Perhaps you've never heard about the Uruguayan Rugby team whose chartered plane crashed in the Andes back in the 1970's. By the time they had been rescued 3 months after the crash, the 15 survivors had only managed to stay alive by eating the bodies of their dead friends and relatives. There have been several films made about this incident, including the recent Society Of The Snow.

My heart is breaking for this poor woman. I am however surprised she did not commit suicide. To be alone in the mountains with a child is unthinkable. I understand the reason on what she survived, her will to live was extremely strong. I would have been too weak to endure this torture, and ended the life of my child and mine !

Wow!! What a horrific yet heroic ordeal… I don’t understand why those who rescued themselves failed to mention a woman and child were still there when at the time it had been mere days since they had left them. I’m glad they were punished, their behaviour was barbaric in its neglect, how hard is it to say, rescue survivors at the plane!! No skin off their noses. Just so, unnecessary and that’s what makes it even more tragic.
