Little bit of Pentatonix trivia. Mitch (the one in the oversized clothes), Scott (the blonde with the baritone voice) and Kirsty (only female) have been singing together FOREVER. They were all in middle school and high school together and have been singing together since they were kids. Little over 10-12 years ago, those three wanted to audition for an A Capella reality show they wanted to take part in, The Sing Off. But, to take part in the show, they had to have at least 5 members. So, they went looking for two more members to fill out their group. Their original bass was a guy by the name of Avi Kaplan (excellent bass!!! Has some of his own stuff out now, you should check him out), they met through mutual friends. Avi was in college at the time, I believe. Kevin (the beatboxer/cellist), they found online through his KZbin videos where he would play the cello while beatboxing. Avi and Kevin agreed to join them, they came up with the group name from the pentatonic scale (because of their excellent harmonies) and auditioned and joined the competition. Here's the most interesting part. The group formed a mere 6 WEEKS before the competition started. They ended up winning season 3, which earned them $100k plus a Sony recording contract. Sony ended up dropping them after less than a year, because Sony didn't think an A Capella group could make it in the music industry. Well, several gold/platinum records and 3 grammies later, Pentatonix has proven everyone wrong. They are one of the few A Capella groups that are played in mainstream music and, to tell the truth, this group paved the way for the A Capella groups that followed. I will tell you this. If you truly jump down this rabbit hole, be prepared to have your channel BLOW UP!!! Pentaholics (that's what we fans call ourselves) LOVE seeing Pentatonix reaction videos! You are going to end up with a LOT more followers, subcriptions and likes, my friend! I hope you are prepared!!!

Kevin, the "guy who's just a beatboxer" in Sound of Silence, is now playing the electric cello, AND beatboxing at the same time - he calls it "celloboxing", and invented it while he was in college. He also sings harmony (recheck the first verse of Sound of Silence; no beatboxing, he's completely singing harmony), and, as here, sometimes sings a short solo (although this is even shorter than most of his solos) - and immediately drops back into beatboxing!
@annmoomau8816 ай бұрын
If you pay attention to what Kevin (cello boxer) is doing with his foot, his cello is hooked to the set up on the floor so he can change the sound on the cello from a more traditional sound to a more electric sound as he plays.

Holy crap indeed! I love it when Kevin gets to play the cello. It doesn’t happen all that often but he always adds the right touch. He’s crazy talented - graduated pre-med from Yale, speaks fluent Mandarin, plays concert level cello, sometimes in tandem with his stellar beatboxing, and has one of the most positive personalities of all time. He also can scream like a certified rock star, evidently. Mitch, he of the oversized jacket, and Kirstie are the two most fashion-forward members of the group so you can assume that their outfits are always intentional. And you called it right by picking out Mitch as rapper-ready. Check out their cover of Ariana Grande’s Problem to see him in action. A quick note, your audio seems to be picking up background voices. Loved your reaction! Peace …

I know that you were thinking that snow might equate with another white substance, but an alternate meaning is that snow falls in the winter, when things are dark and cold. So someone sinking back into depression might be searching harder for the one thing in their life that lifts them up and leads them back to the light.

Kevin does use pedals for a loop. If you listen to what you’re hearing for cello, a couple times you notice what you’re hearing is more than what you’re seeing. The pedals also add distortion and any other effect that can be added to an electric guitar.

I think you'd enjoy their mashup of New Rules x Are You That Somebody? Matt and Kevin really rock the rhythm on that one. This one is a fairly recent performance from them, from just last fall. You can see some of how they've grown from the 1st video that you saw. They just keep getting better and pushing more boundaries. The Masked Singer performance are a lot of fun. They have said that the did the show for 2 reasons- First, they got their start on a singing competition (the Sing Off), and thought it would be fun to go back to their roots and do another competition. Second, it gave them a chance to really play with instruments/production more than they usually do as an a cappella group. They've now incorporated some of those songs into their current summer tour. The other "rabbit holes" that you may enjoy exploring at some point is their solo music. Kevin (beat boxer, tenor, cello, etc) has his own channel where he plays a lot with the looping, combining cello, beat boxing, singing, and keyboard). Start with Down or Sign of the Times. Scott (baritone, tall blond guy) has been releasing solo music since fall, 2022. He sometimes likes to play with multiple variations of his own songs. His first was Mars (there are 3 different variations on his channel). His most recent is Mad About You. There are 2 videos (3 if you include the video for the "piano diaries" variation on Toby Gad's channel), 6 variations total on Spotify, etc. Kirstin has an album from 2017 with both videos and live performances on her channel. And Mitch has released a number of songs under the name "Messer". His are very 80's synth/EDM-ish.

Yes, do Masked Singer Pentatonix All Performances. I can't wait to see you watch that!! There is no way for me to tell you how ultra talented this group is! They just celebrated their 13 years together anniversary, & the amazing thing is - they were breathtakingly talented on The Sing Off (the competition show for a capella groups) which they won. And no matter how perfect they were as time progressed, (they quickly became a world phenomenon) they kept getting better & better! Here are my Ptx song requests that I think you will enjoy: 2016 Popspring performance (4 songs live) Kevin's 5th live in concert Daft Punk (medley) Can't Hold Us (they were just "Babytonix" back then!) Say Something Sing (original) But it really doesn't matter, coz you can't pick a bad one coz there aren't any!😉

Yes, "Christmas Time Is Here/Pure Imagination" was filmed in the same session. Yeah, Mitchy and his oversized looks, lol. He loves fashion and is very particular about how he expresses himself that way. PTX is no stranger to TV. They originally won The Sing Off in 2011 right when the band formed, they appeared on quite a few different types of tv programs, including acting roles for Mitch, Scott, and Kirstin, in an acapella inspired episode of "Bones," and they were in the recent "Candy Cane Lane." Honestly, listing out their TV and movie resume would take all day, but yes, they did "Masked Singer" last year and nobody was kidding anybody, the judges all had to pretend they didn't know who it was, lol. Loved your reaction! I am glad you got a good look at Kevin and his integral contributions!

😂 Yes, they were on _The Masked Singer_ in 2023 as "California Roll." They were unmasked after their third performance. As for their identity being obvious, it was, but it wasn't their costumes that gave them away; it was their voices. In their first performance Scott came out, with the rest of the group hidden behind him, and started singing, and people said "Wait a second, that's Scott! So where's the rest of Pentatonix?" And when four more California rolls appeared, even before they started singing we said, "Oh, good. There they are." It was hilarious watching internet commenters trying to come up with "guesses" about who California Roll was, while ignoring the obvious. I actually heard a couple of guys speculate that it was The Beatles getting back together, completely missing the facts that there were only four people in The Beatles and two of them are dead.

Please do all episodes of the Masked Singer they were on. They did an awesome job of all the pieces they arranged. Especially the song they did after the reveal. They did use music during the show because otherwise it would have been too easy to guess who they were....and probably because it's a requirement of the show.

Great reaction If memory serves me correctly, the pedal allowed Kevin to change it from electric cello to a more electric guitar sound. When Kirstin sings her mini solo before Kevin’s solo you might be able to see his foot hit the pedal. If you want to be amazed by Kevin he has his own channel, KO, and the song “ Down” by Marian Hill is amazing ( Kevin Live he Loops there) PTX rarely uses instruments , but when they do it is very visible. Usually if an instrument it is Kevin on the cello. Scott has played piano and they have paired with Lindsay Stirling 3 times and she plays violin If you want to see rapping try: Can’t Hold Us Butter x Dynamite Problem ( the official video is great but their live at a radio station is outstanding and top tier. Thrift Shop Their original song “Sing” And for something crazy, PTX version of “ Last Christmas” by Wham ( original disliked by many because often overplayed on radio) They have Korean singers Hikakin and Seikin on it and there is intense beatboxing on it. Who knew the song needed beatboxing? I adore George Michael but I admit like PTX version better Their catalog is huge, anything they do is awesome

I think my first recommendation for someone who loves lyrics would be their cover of Imagine by John Lennon. It's an older song but Pentatonix makes it very relevant to today. It'll hit you in your gut. And you will get to experience 'the wall of sound' as we Pentaholics call it. You'll understand exactly what I mean when you hear it, lol! Thanks for the reaction and welcome to the rabbit hole. Subbed for more PTX. --Adding: If you'd like to see something original by them I'd recommend Run to You. It is very different from Sound of Silence and more classically a ccappella, but the lyrics are very powerful. A second strong original would be 'Thank You', written by Scott to his partner during COVID lock-downs. It's again very different from their normal fair in that it is very much a Scoot song and has both Cello and Piano, but again, for someone who loves lyrics, I think you will really enjoy it.

I think your analysis of the lyrics is very good. I've always viewed this song as expressing the struggle of an addict to break free specifically from cocaine (the snow). His love for another and their love in return is his anchor to help pull himself free. He falls but he keeps trying. His love for another is his hope that he can escape. --I'll add that I don't think the lyric is 'kiss from a rose on the gray' ie darkness, depression; I believe the lyric is 'kiss from a rose on the grave' meaning he knows he's sunk so low in addiction that he is in danger of dying and is foreseeing his own possible funeral if he can't escape. --Just my take on it! Shrug! Thanks for the great reaction. Looking forward to more!
