INCREDIBLE RAF Typhoon display in torrential rain - RIAT '23

Well, Friday of RIAT was an absolute wash out. I was expecting to see The Ark dock into runway 27 at RAF Fairford at one point.
Instead though, we were treated to Flight Lieutenant Matt Brighty's absolutely INCREDIBLE Typhoon display in torrential rain. I'm not sure if it comes across in this video but the conditions were absolutely atrocious. It had been raining all day, and this was a particularly heavy burst. I'm amazed Brighty even went up, let alone putting on this incredible display.

@@moonbaby6134 To be honest, when they entered service and replaced the old F.3 in the interceptor role I immediately appreciated the performance enhancement for there RAF. Just recently the RAF Typhoon demo has been a regular highlight for me at airshows. The BAE Systems display with a full weapons load out in 2016 was epic.

That's a beautiful demo, it really deserved better weather. One thing I would really love to see would be a display involving a Typhoon flying together with a Rafale. These two aircraft look so similar and yet they are so different!

F-18 first flew 1978, Typhoon arrived in 1994 so I would expect some progress.

Staying wide on a few shots captured the true speed of this aircraft. Brings back memories of a washout at Mildenhall many years ago that was saved by a Luftwaffe Phantom RC 4E doing low passes across the crowd.

Ah..Eurofighter..brilliant demonstration, considering a ceiling of 600-800ft?! No verticals, no loops and still a potent display. Must be huge fun flying these. One of my favourite fighters.

Great display considering the weather and excellent videography. Question to the informed. Was that a belly fuel tank beneath and if so, was it needed for the amount of time the pilot spent on reheat?

Thanks a lot Ian. I saw a video on the Ted Coningsby KZbin channel where the crew discuss this. The centre tank is used as ferry fuel to get to the display location, the display is then flown with the tank empty. Thanks 👍 We both got out in fully working condition. Prior planning prevents pi** poor performance and all that 😂 JJC Camera Rain Cover for the camera. Rab and Berghaus waterproofs for me. We were both totally dry, unbelievably 😂

When all the manufacturers was trying to sell the fighter jets to Finland I was on the airshow and the most impressive tricks was made by Finnish pilot with old hornet. It was not so great show of for the sellers, the pilot must be really good to get all out from the machines. 😅

Yes, the heavy rain at low altitude could cause a slight performance increasement due to the lower compressor last stage temperature. While the moisture at the very last compressor stage able to reduce the compressed air temperature by the vaporizing, while the turbine inlet temperature remains the same, the heat step will be higher than the normal. This heat difference will be an advantage at the nozzle, where the higher internal heat of the mass flow turns higher energy -> higher thrust. Not as much as the direct water injection by a dedicated sub-system, but it is an existing increase. Even the engine noise gonna be sharper and stronger, but it is partially came from the better sound conductor wet air too.

RAF aircraft that can function in the rain isn't incredible: it's a fundamental operational necessity. When William Churchill said "fight them bítches" he meant fight them whatever the weather was doing. Barry Bosch isn't going to postpone an invasion until the weather improves. This isn't Wimbledon. There's no roof on centre and one.

It's not really about the jet functioning in the rain. What's incredible to me it that the skill of the pilot allowed him to perform a low level, high energy air show routine in the pouring rain with restricted visibility and potentially issues with actually being able to see the runway and the horizon. A truly all weather fighter, and all weather piloting skills 😎

Yeah, all that water in the air on the verge of condensing, much easier for the jet to lower the pressure just enough to pull the clouds out of it. And rewards the photographers who can track the plane smoothly and still get sharp photos at relatively low speeds 😁
