I’m hoping beyond all hope that this wasn’t truly 300 years old. You have a child’s view of restoration, not everything is meant to be shiny. You removed all the patina and history this object may have had, along with a great deal of the details. At that point, it would be better to melt it down and cast something else from the material.

I would like to resolve a doubt: were these pieces originally colored? It reminds me a lot of a medieval painting, The Crucified Christ, by Cimabue (1240-1302), which is very colorful and has a strong connection with Eastern European Orthodox art. So I just think about this possibility.

If the cross is really 300 years old, then you have destroyed its value. You destroyed the patina and destroyed the surface texture. If it had any value before your "restoration", it's just scrap metal now. PLEASE, never "restor" anything again. There's a reason real restorers are so expensive. The result is nice, but really things that are this old (if indeed it is 300 years) need to be treated with a bit more respect. The abrasive removal of the history of the piece makes it next to worthless as anything except a decoration. Also for reference, “ancient” would apply to objects from the distant past, this is what would properly termed “antique”. Perhaps practice on some less significant pieces from flea markets or the like, I’m sure given time, you will grow into the subject.

@@YoungRestorer - Such an old piece keeps beauty itself in its antiquity. The treatment you used removed all the patina that took so long to form. What's more, with the exception of rust, oxidation of iron parts, patina protects the surface of metal parts. So, if I were the owner of this beautiful piece, I would not do this intervention. 🌺
