Greetings from Siletz Oregon. We are enjoying a rare sunny April day. I came to the Oregon Coast for the first time in 1970. The natural beauty took my breath away. It still does. Happy Trails.

Glad you enjoyed our beautiful state of Oregon. We often stay at my friends cabin in Yachats....pronounced Ya-hots. My husband and I traveled to the Redwoods in 2012 and stayed in the little town of Kla-math.....I was raised in Oregon....and had seen hundreds of large trees and did not think that I could ever get excited about seeing another tree....but, when I saw the Redwoods.....I was yelling to my husband..."Look at that tree....look at that tree...LOOK NOW!" I was completely amazed and in absolute awe!!! If you ever make it back to Oregon during the summer...you really MUST see Crater Lake.....and yes, the water really is as blue as it is shown on photos.....the first glimpse of that beautiful deep blue water will take your breath away.....if you ever make the trip, I suggest you hike down to the lake and take the boat ride around it with Park Rangers as tour guides. It is quite a strenuous hike out....but oh, so worth it. Try to go when it isn't too hot...but, snow can be on the ground as late as July.....there is a lodge there and some cabins too. The Eastern side of Oregon is as different from the costal and inland valleys of the Western side as....night and day, but still beautiful in its own way. Thank you for visiting our state and posting such positive things about it. We really do have everything here....Ocean, many and various rivers and lakes, mountains, desert, high mountain prairies....and still have a lot of wide open spaces too. We do however have some fair sized towns....Portland, Eugene and Salem to name a few.

I really enjoyed your video Dan, but if I may correct you on a few things. The banana belt you mentioned and the world war 2 bomb are both in Brookings. The reason the temperature is warmer in Brookings is because what's called a "Chetco Effect". The way the east winds come down the chetco river causes the warmer temp. I live in Brookings now but I grew up in Lincoln City, I'm glad you mentioned Barnacle Bill's they have been open for as ten years longer then I've been alive (35):) And yes you are right the chowder is the best at the sea hag! Always has always will. A close second would be Dory Cove in Lincoln City. I'm glad you got so much enjoyment on our beautiful coast. Come back soon
@DanTraveling11 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jillian, I thought i read somewhere that the Japanese plane used the light house as a guide to head east and then down to Brookings? I will definitely try the Dory Cove next time we are in LC.

Dan I am a native Oregonian, and have traveled the full length of the Oregon Coast many times. I agree it is special and I enjoyed your video and comments. I also enjoyed all the comments. However, you missed one of the most spectacular and beautiful parts of the coast and I have to admit I missed it until a few years ago. When you drive up 101 you get to Coos Bay and I would hurry through along the river and all the sawmills and never stop or even check it out. But west of town is an area called "Sunset Beach", it is about a 30 mile drive out the bay to the ocean. The first real view is of a little cove and state park, then up the hill a few miles is Shore Acres which is worth a full day or more. The road has several view points of what I think is the most beautiful section of the Oregon Coast. I have hundreds of pictures of the park and ocean. I am sure you can find lots about Shore Acres on the internet. It was discovered by a local lumberman who built his home and developed a park for his own enjoyment. The house is gone and now its a public park. BTW, I live in Central Oregon an area worth another trip to Oregon. Curt Drahn

Dan, great video. Banana Belt is Brookings, Or. If you visit our library, you can see the family samurai sword, presented our city of Brookings by Nobuo Fujita, the Japanese pilot that bombed Brookings. Up the Chetco, river. Your correct about the Southern Coast being the mist scenic. Samuel Boardman who was instrumental in preserving the Coast, considered Brookings his favorite part. I give advice to people visiting, when you hit the Southern Coast, for the next twenty miles stop at every stop that's available. Sunset at Harris Beach. I love Cape Ferrolo, head two your left, when the trail splits take left trail to bench, overlooking Gorgeous beach below. Redwood walk, I suggest Stout Grove up smith river, 20 miles south of Brookings. I like the beer at the brewery next to Fred Meyers on 101. Love the Chips at Wild River Pizza. Well done. Have fun. Feel adventurous, North I've Orick, Fern Canyon. Bring water shoes. That's it folks. Fern Canyon road starts at elk viewing area. Thanks Dan!! You should have stayed in Brookings, made the same mistake my first time through. Best camp Ground Harris Beach State Park, reserve early in summer!

Fern Canyon is one of my favorite places. I visited it years ago and saw the grotto of fern and a herd of wild elk on the beach. I was hooked, and now so are my children. It's a little off the beaten path so it can be easily missed.

Great review of the OR coast. One thing, @3:37, its pronounced 'clam-ith' not 'clay-mith' for Klamith. Also its 'ya-hotz' for Yachats @8:45, and 'tilla-muck' @10:45, 'Gear-a-baldi' and Klatsup is more of a 'catsup' with a k pronunciation @12:21. Next time, checkout the Jetty Fishery, right off of 101 about 10 minutes before Wheeler on the left hand side of the frwy. In the summer they grill gigantic fresh caught oysters over a fire pit with a dash of corona and hot sauce. You can also rent a boat and some crab pots and catch a little Dungeness for yourself! They will steam and clean them right there on the dock. I wouldn't buy them fresh by the pound from them though, they are ridiculously priced! (If they do steam and clean for you, make sure they save you the crab heart. You eat it right then and there and it is the MOST amazing flavor!

What a charming video! I'm amazed at how well you were able to capture the rough and vast coastal area of Oregon in just fifteen minutes. The Esther Lee in Lincoln City is exactly as you said - that's a well-deserved plug for them. One thing I'd like to advise visitors about is not to feed the wildlife, here or anywhere. It makes them dangerous and messes up their natural feeding habits. Cheers!

Peter Petelski Also, the starfish, mussels and other sealife that Dan saw on the rocks during low tide is very good news. There are reports that the British Vancouver coast line has no sealife, hundreds of miles, no birds, no insects, and the culprit may be Fukushima. It is said that the tide pools are the nursery of the sea and that almost everything is dead, and gone in the tidal pools that were once teeming with life along the British Vancouver coastline. (source Dana Durnford, the Nuclear Proctologist).
