I've always wondered if he even thinks this is all real or if he actually died and this is the afterlife. How do you keep believing in reality after an experience like that? Stuck in a pocket of air underwater in pitch black while fish that you can't even see swim around you...then suddenly a hand sticks out? I might think it had ended right there and nothing after was real. I don't know how you move on psychologically from something like that. Ever.

@@mcnamarakywas actually not a hand sticking out. He saw the flashlight of the diver and stuck his hand out to him, which jumpscared the diver. Who assumed it was a dead body, but then the hand started moving and he realized it was a living person
@mcnamaraky5 ай бұрын
@@elementalgolem5498 Sorry I mixed up that detail a bit, but, regardless of the first thing he saw (which makes PERFECT sense that it was a flashlight btw, so kudos to you since it was pitch black so ANY LIGHT would be the first thing you see) and I do know he grabbed the divers arm and the diver nearly had a heart attack right then and there. But regardless of all of that my main point still stands: does he think that this is the afterlife? Because again, if I WERE STUCK in identical conditions and suddenly a miracle occurs where, by some slim to zero chance, a diver finds you before you run out of air (let alone food and water) do you think it's real? Or do you just think you're dead and that's what comes after? Again if I were stuck in the pitch black underwater for that long like that, I would just assume I was actually dead. And if a diver suddenly appeared I'd definitely not believe it was real. Because the odds of it happening are so slim that it basically could be considered a *MIRACLE.* I just personally don't know if I could ever believe in reality again after an experience like that. I'd think that my next life had started or that I had died and this is what comes next. That's just my overall point: if you've been stuck in a situation so dire where you're in a pocket of air in a flipped over ship, in the blackest of black, literally ZERO light, and you feel all the living stuff swimming around you ready to start feasting once you're dead, and then suddenly you see a divers flashlight and grab them? Like be honest: would you think it was real? Or would you think you'd died and that was "God" bringing you into heaven? Just from a psychological standpoint I just don't know how you go back to believing in reality. Itd be like hitting a 1 billion dollar Power Ball Jackpot and then hitting a 1 billion dollar Mega Millions jackpot the next drawing: do you still believe you're in actual reality? Or that you're dead and in heaven or in a coma living out your wildest fantasy? Or that it's a simulation and you truly are the main character? How do you believe in reality after that? I'm just saying that IDK if I could EVER be normal again afterwards. So if this guy has somehow gotten over that PTSD, which I doubt he ever FULLY WILL, but maybe he can just enough where he can continue on. Sorry I wrote a lot, but the situation is still so insane to me and it's still so fascinating from a psychological perspective. Like, your boat capsizes: everyone else is dead and you're stuck in a pocket of air for days, with living stuff swimming around you in the darkest, most pitch black imaginable (not ONE PHOTON of visible light), running out of air and with no food or drinks or water, and hours and days pass and you think you've died and then suddenly you are MIRACULOUSLY saved by a rescue diver? I personally don't think I would believe in objective reality anymore. Again sorry I wrote a lot, but I really want to convey how psychologically...damaging this would be? Borderline irrecoverable? The fact that this man continues living a normal life is a second miracle. Again, I'd bet dollars to donuts that he still has PTSD from it and will for the rest of his life (I know I would) but the fact that it not only isn't crippling him but he's actually gone back to the ocean and diving and stuff? Like...he either is the strongest person mentally I've ever heard or he doesn't believe any of this is real and is just doing whatever he wants to. Sorry again for the length, but I have never gotten over that story and what it would mean for someone psychologically. Extremely fascinating. I actually wonder if his brain was rewired as a result. Be very interesting to do an fMRI on him and look at his brains activity when you talk about reality vs someone who didn't suffer the most horrible thing ever

I'm surprised you decided to mention Titanic survivors and didn't include Charles Joughin. He was the chief baker on the ship, and when he realized the ship was sinking, he helped himself to a couple of stiff drinks, helped get people onto the lifeboats, and threw whatever furniture that looked like it might float into the water for people to hold onto. Joughin ended up riding the ship down into the water, and ended up being rescued by one of the lifeboats, but somehow managed to avoid anything worse than swollen feet, despite alcohol normally promoting hypothermia.
@HaliaStone Жыл бұрын
I read somewhere the alcohol actually warmed up his body temperature, I could be wrong..
@anasazidarkmoon Жыл бұрын
@@HaliaStone according to everything I've read, alcohol makes you feel warm because it gets your blood vessels to open up, but that also makes your core temp go down faster, which is why survival and medical texts recommend against alcohol consumption for warmth. It could be that Joughin had a genetic tweak that helped him process alcohol differently than an average person, though. At least, that's my best guess.

Unfortunately, Zeus’s unexperience out in the water meant he wasn’t use to the water life, which caused him to spiral into a deep depression, eventually leading to him starving himself. 5:10 sad thing about this guys story is that after he was saved, not only did he suffer from survivors guilt but he also faced harsh ridicule from the family members of the crew members who died. Can we take a minute to appreciate the captain, crew, and passengers of RMS Carpathia? They pushed their ship so hard that night they permanently damaged her engineering plant reducing her top speed from them on. When the someone pointed out to the lead engineer that the gauges were in the red he responded by hanging his hat on said gauge. The passengers gathered blankets, distributed warm food and drink and generally helped the survivors in any way they could. The entire ship came together to race at higher than top speed into the same ice field that had just sunk RMS Titanic to rescue as many as they could. Despite Carpathia's owners, Cunard Line, and Titanic's owners, White Star Line, being bitter rivals.

For Americans I think it’s because Japan didn’t surrender until the bombs were dropped on them. Around September of 1945 (Japan surrendered) because Germany surrendered in May of 1945. So, technically Germany surrendered twice

Mostly has to do with who attacked who. Japan's didn't exactly strike the British homeland. That was just Germany. Meanwhile Germany never struck the American homeland. That was Japan. Had Japan not joined up with Germany and the supposed Italian army they would legitimately have been different wars entirely.
@haexan Жыл бұрын
The 2 bombs over Japan didn't end WWII, the surrender was sent before they were dropped, it's believed considering the bombs had 2 different compounds that they dropped them before the surrender to test them on humans and how they would differ. Europe was already beating Germany before America got involved, though they estimate it would have taken longer and more lives would have been lost.

One of the most unbelievable of mine was Louie Zamperini, who's story made it into a very famous book. He served as a pilot during WWII and his crew's plane went down in the pacific with only 3 survivors. They were at sea for 47 days and were subjected to shark attacks, multiple storms, and even one event when a Japanese aircraft spotted them and began shooting at their raft. They were eventually found by a Japanese aircraft carrier, where they were taken as Prisoners of War and suffered in brutal concentration camps for years until they were finally rescued at the end of the war.

I have heard about the story of the USS Indianapolis. It had previously carried components, including uranium, for the "Little Boy" atomic bomb. After it sank, the survivors were stuck in the water with sharks, having hallucinations and delirium, and covered with hazardous materials such as oil burning their skin off. As stated in the video, the sharks killed many, but many more also died of starvation, hypothermia, dehydration, salt poisoning, injuries, and some even killed themselves. The plane that arrived to the scene first alerted through the radio of the scene. A US Navy PBY Catalina seaplane also arrived and against orders, took risky maneuvers to land on the water and pick up as many men as possible, which damaged the plane so much that it could not fly. The men who were most injured or looked closest to death were picked up first, with 56 survivors total picked up. Eventually, ships arrived to pick up the men on the plane and in the water. Out of almost 1,200 men on the ship, only 316 survived.

I think Les Stroud would be more entertaining than Bear Grylls. Bear had a camera crew and medics trailing him the whole time; Les set up the cameras alone and had no crew or medical support on station. He was also far more chill and less flamboyant.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was the missing titanic submarine. It breaks my heart every time I think about it. I hope someone finds them and everyone gets out alive. ❤

Yea I feel bad too but you should know that they signed a paper saying that they could die. Also One had a step son and instead of trying to find him he went to a concert! Im not saying that anyone should die but they knew what could happen

@roseyxaliceI know it sounds horrible, but I honestly hope the sub imploded, the chances of them being found are extraordinarily slim, and instant death seems less horrifying than slowly running out of breathable air in the crushing darkness of the ocean

@@edwinhiler8546’d figured that had to sign papers, it still is horrible though. And I can’t believe that step-son went to a concert while one of his family members were lost! That’s really sad.

I'm hoping Mike does another one of these in the future and talks about Bethany Hamolton, I know her story has been told many times, but it's still such an amazing story of survial, thanks to the quick thinking of the people with Bethany and by the Grace of God! She is an inspiration to so many, myself being one of them!! ❤❤

Seeing Michael apologize to the humpback whale made me smile. The whale certainly didn’t intend to do that to Michael had it known that Michael wasn’t on its usual menu of krill and smallish fish, or that he was far too large to swallow. It was simply a case of the whale doing what humpback whales do and taking in large mouthfuls of sea water to filter out its dinner through its baleen. Michael just so happened to be in the sea water that the whale took a mouthful of. I bet if the whale could it would apologize too.

This is a really good way to explain what happens in these stories by showing a small but detailed cartoon to really help picture what it was like instead of a long page you would need to read, great video!

As a nurse myself with the 438 days one at 2:19 if you were still wondering,I’ve found out how long you can live without air,water,food and shelter so here it is: 3 minutes without air 3 hours without shelter 3 days without food 3 weeks without water So basically you can live a while without food and water but drinking urine is NOT GOOD because it can actually dehydrate you more if you don’t mix in half a cup of water and if you don’t have water then try to find any liquid

As a former resident of Indianapolis, it always interests me when I see new information about CA-35 (otherwise known as the USS Indianapolis). The sinking of the ship into the shark-infested Pacific Ocean was just as tragic as the sinking itself. Thanks for uploading this to show a reminder to always stay safe, regardless of where you are.
