Date: Sunday July 26th 2020
Target Fish Species: Yellowtail and White Sea Bass
Fishing Vessel: Solo Skiff
End Result: 1 White Sea Bass
After getting a late start launching my Solo Skiff from Ski Beach in Mission Bay San Diego California I stopped just outside the mouth of the bay to try and catch live bait to slow troll flylined (no weight) along the kelp edges and underwater canyons of the incredible La Jolla fishery.
I arrived into La Jolla just after 10am to some slight wind and surface bump and dozen or so boats and kayaks fishing the area. A small metal boat waved me down and told me they watch my KZbin. I then got to do one of my favorite things and tell them thanks is person for watching my videos and I feel myself getting energized as the experience plays out. Truly amazing.
After getting blessed up and energized by my new friends Alfonso and George I throw out my Nomad DTX 40 Minnow and start trolling in 80'-90' of water at about 5 mph. I start to enjoy my Sunday brunch and bam something hits the Nomad. I flip my Mercury 6 HP engine into neutral (like like to fight fish in Southern California with it in neutral, similar to fighting fish on a kayak.
As I'm fighting the fish with my Shimano TLD 20 Reel on a Sabre Chaser rod and I'm thinking it is a yellowtail because I had caught a yellowtail in the same area the day before; however, I should of known it wasn't a yellowtail from the little amount of head shakes and only 1 big run. When I finally brought the fish to color I was blown away by the sight of a broom tail and the fins of a WHITE SEA BASS! The last legal size White Sea Bass I caught was my one and only in 2015 right before Christmas with frozen dead squid on the bottom just after sunset.
After landing the White Sea Bass and giving thanks I went over and told my new friends Alfonso and George about it. They loved it and reminded me to post the video to you tube so here it is!
I made my way back to Mission Bay and cruised by the bait barge and my friend's dock to show off my catch.
Thank you all for watching and I am so grateful to share my journey with you all and the energy you all provide me through your KZbin comments and meetings in person.

Mickey you are living the dream. Good Karma coming your way. I surf launched LJ today on my Solo and bait was hard to find trolled a Rapala X greenback but no luck instead just kept getting a bunch of Bonito's on the sabiki and could not find any bird action. Finally got a nice 14" greenback and trolled it for the last hour or more before heading in cause the increasing wind was making a lot of white caps. Hope to see you out there on one these trip. Tight Lines, Mickey.

@markr9312
@markr9312 3 жыл бұрын
@@SDFishandSips Thanks Mickey. I did for a while but if your not constantly moving faster, it leads to issues. On my older Malibu X Factor I used to have I caught a 5' Mako dropping a bonito. Got it's picture before he broke off 2' along side of the kayak and it's the picture on my Avatar on BWE (FISH11). Twice the bonito on a fly line wrapped the other rod line trolling a sabiki. That was almost the same as with larger greenbacks, not hard to deal with. The other issue was a totally different adventure. The flylined bonito swam fast enough to wrap my braid on the outboard prop. That was sketchy, it killed the motor and I had to try and reach the line with the engine tilted. Can't really put your whole body weight that far back, so I used my gaff to reach the braid. When I pulled on the fish end it unwound a turn before it would bind up. At first I tried to grab the rod end and couldn't get it that easy, so the fun part began. Removing the outboard from the transom to put the motor weight further centered. I put a game clip on the outboard just in case. Lifting it up and on top of the gas can was not too hard, once there I cut the braid and hand lined the bonito in and released it. Then I cut the rod end line and at that point when I pulled on rod end of the braid it unwound easily. The hardest part was trying to lift and get the outboard bracket (which kept turning) to set on the transom. After a few tries, I got it, but it was an adventure. After that I kept trolling the Rapala X rap and the sabiki, finally after many more bonitos, I caught the large greenback and trolled it the rest of the time. I learned if that happens again, to try the rod side line first as it would be the likely line on top of the wound on line. Every trip kayak or otherwise you learn something, if you don't learn, you can't get better. It's funny because the area and depths I trolled turned out to be the same were you caught your Yellowtail and WSB. Of course over the last 7 years that is mostly the large area I have caught 80% of my Yellowtail.

Have you ever used Rapala xraps? If so, you like the nomads better?
@SDFishandSips
@SDFishandSips 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have used the Rapala xraps with success but do like the nomads better. I think the Nomad DTX minnow has a little more sideways shake and is more sporadic then the rapalas. And I have ore confidence in the Nomad because I have fished it more and caught more fish with it. Everyone is different, this is just my opinion based on my experiences.

How far is that from mission bay?
@SDFishandSips
@SDFishandSips 3 жыл бұрын
La Jolla is about 7 miles north of the Mission Bay mouth. From the launch at Ski Beach to the mouth is about 10 minutes and then about 30 minutes from the mouth to the south end of La Jolla kelp. Then La Jolla kelp stretches another couple miles north.

nice fish, which Nomad was that
@SDFishandSips
@SDFishandSips 3 жыл бұрын
David Haan It is the DTX Minnow 40. 8+M so it trolls down at around 25’. For some reason this lure seems to swim more sporadic and get bite more than a Rapala in my experience. I troll it around 5mph.

@@SDFishandSips thx for that. They are almost 2x $$ as an X-rap 40. Crazy. Seems like the DTX comes with better hooks though. And good to know they work well. Thanks for posting
