Mickey you are living the dream. Good Karma coming your way. I surf launched LJ today on my Solo and bait was hard to find trolled a Rapala X greenback but no luck instead just kept getting a bunch of Bonito's on the sabiki and could not find any bird action. Finally got a nice 14" greenback and trolled it for the last hour or more before heading in cause the increasing wind was making a lot of white caps. Hope to see you out there on one these trip. Tight Lines, Mickey.
@SDFishandSips
@SDFishandSips 4 жыл бұрын
Mark R Try trolling one of those bonito. I know people who have caught yellowtail with bonito and one guy told me he caught a White Sea Bass with a half dead bonito. Crazy. Thanks for all the support and I hope to see you on the water soon.
@markr9312
@markr9312 4 жыл бұрын
@@SDFishandSips Thanks Mickey. I did for a while but if your not constantly moving faster, it leads to issues. On my older Malibu X Factor I used to have I caught a 5' Mako dropping a bonito. Got it's picture before he broke off 2' along side of the kayak and it's the picture on my Avatar on BWE (FISH11). Twice the bonito on a fly line wrapped the other rod line trolling a sabiki. That was almost the same as with larger greenbacks, not hard to deal with. The other issue was a totally different adventure. The flylined bonito swam fast enough to wrap my braid on the outboard prop. That was sketchy, it killed the motor and I had to try and reach the line with the engine tilted. Can't really put your whole body weight that far back, so I used my gaff to reach the braid. When I pulled on the fish end it unwound a turn before it would bind up. At first I tried to grab the rod end and couldn't get it that easy, so the fun part began. Removing the outboard from the transom to put the motor weight further centered. I put a game clip on the outboard just in case. Lifting it up and on top of the gas can was not too hard, once there I cut the braid and hand lined the bonito in and released it. Then I cut the rod end line and at that point when I pulled on rod end of the braid it unwound easily. The hardest part was trying to lift and get the outboard bracket (which kept turning) to set on the transom. After a few tries, I got it, but it was an adventure. After that I kept trolling the Rapala X rap and the sabiki, finally after many more bonitos, I caught the large greenback and trolled it the rest of the time. I learned if that happens again, to try the rod side line first as it would be the likely line on top of the wound on line. Every trip kayak or otherwise you learn something, if you don't learn, you can't get better. It's funny because the area and depths I trolled turned out to be the same were you caught your Yellowtail and WSB. Of course over the last 7 years that is mostly the large area I have caught 80% of my Yellowtail.

Yes, I have used the Rapala xraps with success but do like the nomads better. I think the Nomad DTX minnow has a little more sideways shake and is more sporadic then the rapalas.
