This song is from The Wiz which is the Tony Award Winning All Black reimagining of The Wizard of Oz. Stephanie originated the role of Dorothy on Broadway and the show swept The Tonys with 8 nominations and 7 wins. Michael Jackson developed a friendship with Stephanie while she did the show and he went on to star in the movie version as The Scarecrow, but Diana Ross replaced Stephanie as Dorothy for the film. Stephanie says she and Michael began dating at that time, and their friendship continued through the years. About a decade after Stephanie originally played this role on Broadway, and after revisiting the role in several other productions, she remade this song, which was one of her big numbers from the show. She did this remake as a tribute to Ken Harper (the show's original producer) and Charlie Smalls (the show's composer who wrote this beautiful song), both of whom had recently passed away. I love both versions and appreciate her changing it up, but the Original Broadway version will always be my favorite.
