When you look up at the old beams on Kominkas (traditional folk houses), one will see the beautiful marks left by the carpenters of the past. I had always been curious as to what tools they used and how they achieved those marks. We were fortunate to have a master of traditional hand tools, Amemiya-san demonstrate how the carpenters of the past milled the logs.

As someone who recently thought I knew what I was doing with an axe and missed horribly this made my skin crawl. My advise to myself is to never ever put any body parts in front of a sharp edge again. It doesn't matter how sure I am that I won't miss, I hit perfectly ten times in a row and missed the eleventh. I'm lucky that the hand surgeons are so good that I will probably make a more or less full recovery with time.

Nice axe! I am too old (and too clumsy) to bend over and control a heavy axe, so I stand on the ground and top hew logs. I use two types of axes: a longer, straight edged scoring and a slightly curved and dished hewing, after scoring the log. Because I chop on the top of the log, I can use the weight of the axe to raise a chip, much like cross grain chopping with a chisel. Then I swing the hewing axe (or the scoring axe) in a horizontal arc and the blade acts like a plane to release the chips or shave the surface smooth. It is easy to rest the axe on the log, and it avoids striking the ground. I am impressed with the chopper's skill, but never will attempt that technique. Thanks for sharing the video!

In Germany we have an institution called the "Berufsgenossenschaft". They control occupational safety in the companies. Barefoot in the danger zone of an ax... there you can lock the shop directly. 🤣

Always great content but using an axe barefoot, you'll only get it wrong once not worth the risk

One of my other professional occupations was within the realm of "wilderness risk management." A foundational premise of this was two focal points...Those things that look really dangerous are called..." Perceive Risk."...(e.g. Rock Climbing, Extreme Kayaking, Caving, etc), and then those things that fall under..."Actual Risk." (etc. Rappelling, Swimming, Walking around at night. etc) As both a Wilderness Guide and a professional Timberwright/Woodwright...the act of hewing timber with bare feet is only a preceded risk...not an actual one...IF...!!!...One was taught traditionally and practiced the craft within those parameters and context... Case in point, I have been hewing like this (and similar methods) for over 40 years...I have (like the person in the video) all my toes and fingers... There is no "risk" here...there is simply skill and only that... You are taught that the..." body and mind - tool and material are one when doing this work,"...or... you simply do not do this work at all...

Having all his toes shows you how good he is. I wonder, though, is it actually really difficult to hit your feet? Where one holds down the shaft of the axe will determine where the axe head strikes the wood. The arc of the swing, if you miss, will also pass your feet, as you stand inside the arc.

"..this is done by a trained professional that knows what he's doing"... ..of course also attested by the complete set of toes haha

신발이 미끄러져 넘어진다... 신발은 정말 위험하다... 맨발은 위험하다고 인식될뿐... Shoes cause you to slip and fall...they are the actual risk... bare feet are only a perceived risk...
