Incredible! Version 2 FULL HF Modification For The Quansheng K5

Here we take a look at the K5 radio, with Version 2 modification board installed. This little mod board adds incredible performance on the SW and HF bands.

You’re welcome Paul! There was simply no need for me to include the actual installation as your video is spot on. Have you seen the new boards? Looks like they have an IPEX connector for a separate antenna now. Plus some more tweaks. I have some on order but I doubt I will do a video on them unless they add greater value. Cheers mate.

@@TechMindsOfficial i have just received a V3 board, and the only clue on how install it I have found is the image in the Bangood listing :) I wonder if I can just try it with a single antenna by following Paul's instructions.... The joys of experimenting!

Many people forget Ham radio is about tinkering. As a result I've seen some stupid comments about this modification elsewhere. We're allowed to modify our radios. This is not GMRS, MURS, or FRS.

Tinkering is fine, but you need to have a minimum of knowledge if you are going to transmit. If you do not understand why you can not use an 2m/70cm filtered end stage on HF then I give up... For receive you can do whatever you like.

@@GoonyMclinux Well I read what others have written about this radio over the last year. Some think they can flash it and transmit 5W 27MHz, while in reality their signal will spew out VHF harmonics they are clueless about. It is not a toy if you interfere with aircraft or maritime communications. But yes people can get the radio and modify all they want for receive purposes.

The Quansheng K5 has been the best thing that's happened to Ham Radio for the past decade or more. Any new radio units need to now have firmware modding ability else don't buy it.

@@GoonyMclinux As a Boomer Ham, (licensed in 1960 when I was 10), I love tinkering with this stuff. But you need to understand that back in the day, Ham radio wasn't as much about the gear as connecting with people around the world at a time when that was very difficult for most people to do. /old guy rant off

@@teslar1 Great, but ideally we would like a more powerful unit with single sideband and not DSB and wide filters. A 5W SSB/CW handheld for e.g 20-6m transmit and receive would become extremely popular at a $100-300 price point.

Is transmitting on 2m/70cm safe for mod board chip when using the same antenna? (v2 board, so without separate antenna port)

Yes absolutely. In fact if you add the second antenna for hf, you have to disconnect the antenna to transmit on v/u to save damaging it.

A noob question. What do people use as a Jack of all trades ariel on a modded version? I don't yet have fixed antenna, and was hoping for a good mobile one. There seem to be a huge choice, so thought I'd try to narrow it down with some help from more experienced users.
