Just a tip when removing that ic. Do not bend it up on it's opposite legs for fear of damaging traces on the board. Simply bend a piece of solid copper wire in a u shape so that it fits all legs at the same time. Flood the wire around the ic and it will come away in one piece with no bending required!

Hello. Use 50 ohm RF1.13 shielded cable (outer diameter 1.13 mm) or 50 ohm RG178 Teflon (PTFE) cable outer diameter 1.80 mm which will allow you to weld the ground braid without melting the central core. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Paul for your work in this great little Radio. I did the Mod too, and i‘m very happy :-) For all the guys that have the same problem with the TX/RX-LED: It is absolutely certain that the flashlight was removed by cutting the board, and a trace was interrupted, which is contacted through the pcb. But it's not a problem, I followed the trace and re-laid a wire to restore the function of the LEDs. The Cu-Wire is soldered from the top of the LEDs to the bottom right pin of the volume knob. (View of the front of the lying PCB) That's all! 73 de Henning

A few things to consider. The second jumper wire goes across a cap. Isn’t there a potential issue of a short? I would use insulated wire. Second thing: I can’t tell if those are transistors or diodes. I do know they melt quite well. For the viewer, I am talking about the little black devices with three contacts. Be careful and mind your soldering iron. Great video and cheers.

To remove and make the "LED hump" flush, I used a soldering iron set to 340F with an old flattish blade tip and very very carefully melted it down little by little. It gave a nice smooth result. I imagine a woodworking iron would work too. The smoke from this type of plastic was not black noxious smoke. It was barely visible and had an almost sweet smell. I was able to melt it the plastic indoors without stinking up the place, but use your judgment. :) Melting certain types of plastic with a soldering iron also helps with shaping square or unusual holes. It's great for mounting square switches because you have more control over the shape than with a knife.

If you are new to this radio, first thing to do out of the box is to go into the menu and find the RESET function, choose ALL. Proceed with the reset, and for safety sake turn off the radio and turn it back on. Your radio will now have 10-1300MHz tx and rx frequency range. The only problem is not having the ability to manually enter four digits to the left of the decimal i.e. 1000MHz to 1300MHz. The cmos memory will be flashed back to factory defaults now. Nice trick Quansheng pulled to pass the radio by the FCC.

I would have liked to see the modification, HF performance without the second antenna port, with the telescopic antenna on the original, SMA port. Then perhaps the second antenna port added. I could easily do this modification. Would I do this modification? No, probably not. They obviously know this radio can be modified, why don’t they do it in the factory? Then sell it to the public? After seeing your first modification I thought they would release a factory version. How much is the modification board/kit?

Impressive mod yes but how many folks are really going to do this. Add to this one really needs decent hand tools to carry this out, is it really financially viable? Why Quansheng can't just roll out the radio assembled with the board already. They've got themselves the next version of the radio.

When you put it to the first test on 20 meters the guys were speaking in Greek. 14.309 KHz. This is an interesting mod and as others have said it would be nice if it was available with the mod from the factory. Was through my scrap box and did find some very fine coax line that is less than half the diameter of the RG174. Not sure of the impedance and it might even be for audio circuits. Would not really matter if just for receive. Now we will wait another decade to see if someone will come up with a cheap all band RX and TX small transceiver. 73!

Sure, HF is only for RX. You can TX only on VHF/UHF after this mod.

Just replace the V1 board for V2 board and leave all around as it is, except a little trace to tiny capacitor for antenna, this has to be scratched and connect an external antenna to this tiny capacitor. All other things are explained in the video.

I have a question. At 38:14 in your video, you measure the grounding of a newly installed connector. In my case, the newly installed antenna connector does not beep at the center pole and ground. However, the existing U/V connector produces a beep between the center pole and ground. Is this normal?

After mod, my radio display everything but not receiving any signal. I think flexible board is fault. Because when I switch to normal mode 2m/70cm I can recieve and transmit using new antenna socket. When switch to mod system I hearing only some typical sound but it's dosen meters what mode or band I use. No any signal recieve.

Sorry to be the troublemaker here but I did the mod exactly as described with the same soft add-on board bought from AliExpress and after flashing the CEC 0.41 firmware I just get noise both in HF and VHF/UHF. I have checked antennas and everything of course. I have lost an UV-K5 but that's not a big damage considering the price. However my advice is do not loose your time and do not apply this mod.

I am sorry for your troubles, but you probably did something wrong, maybe poor antenna connection or you didn't scratch the antenna trace as in video. I modified 3 radios in a row already and never had eny problem.

@@OM0ET I went a little bit further and double checked my connections that appeared to be OK. This time I used a signal generator to get things a little bit more under control. So for what concerns VHF/UHF it is OK however on HF the signal is quite low. At 29 MHz a -37dBm signal yields only S4 and then at 14.25 MHz it drops to S1. I didn´t check any lower, It seems to me some component or association of components act as a high pass filter cutting HF signals. I did not do the mod to have an additional antenna. Did you try to run HF on the standard VHF/UHF SMA? Maybe there is more work to be done to get it working properly this way.

Well, that's why is it so attenuated. If you scratch the antenna trace to the tiny capacitor and connect a piece of wire to this connector you will see how sensitive it will be. That's the reason why is good to add also a second antenna, because of HPF or BPF in the front end.

@@OM0ET Yes I saw that on your video for the V1 mod. With the V1 mod a new choke and capacitor are provided to replace the original choke and capacitor. I suppose this mod has to be done on the V2 also to get it working with the original SMA.I suppose the new choke is 100 uH inductance and the capacitor a 0402 SMC 100nF capacitor.I don't want to make the extra antenna connector mod as I foresee it too complicated and risky.

Из всех этих новаций самая толковая это отдельный антенный вход. Без отдельного входа никакие модернизации не заставят эту примочку нормально работать. А с отдельной антенной и первый вариант будет работать прилично. Только всё равно нет никакого смысла в этой доработке. Управление si4732 отнимает столько памяти, что на реализацию каких нибудь полезных функций собственно радиостанции ничего не остаётся. Из хорошей укв радиостанции получается посредственная станция с заурядным функционалом и посредственный приемник, которых и так полно. А оно надо?

If you had cut the Track/Trace that lead up to the Capacitor from the original Antenna, then it seems the original Antenna is not doing/going anywhere, as the new BNC antenns is connected accros the old Cap and going into the new PCB? So what use is the original Antenna? How is it still working. I have placed an order for the newer V2.5 PCB, from Banggood, but that Board has the connection to second Antenna IPX connector already mounted to it, and comes with Cable and SMA. Do I have to replace or still remove the Cap. If Cap to be replaced, then will both Antenna work, one for the usual FM Demod, and the new Antenna with the Modified, long press of the 0 button Mode, no FM Demod Mode? Hope you can help. Just also to confirm, that is not required to replace the Choke under the Screen, as per the Version 1. Many thanx.
