I had my best ever fishing trip to Lake Moodemere in winter. This was incredible. Unbelievable in fact. I would have been thankful to just catch a few small carp, but what I caught was totally unbelievable. I don't even experience fishing this good at Lake Moodemere in Spring or Summer.

Before you ask... There's a reason I didn't keep any fish for a feed. When I caught the big redfin, I assumed it would be a once off, so I threw it back thinking I wouldn't catch another good fish. Then I caught a lovely yellowbelly. Thinking it would be the last decent fish I caught, I released it. Then I caught another one. This time I KNEW it would be the last one as I was packing up. Had I known I was going to catch what I did, I would have kept the big redfin and the first Yella. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. 👍🙏

Hi Robbie . Thanks for your most informative and enjoyable channel. I love your enthusiasm. I was particularly interested in you comments about Goldfish and Crucian carp. I used to catch lots of Crucians in the U.K. in the 1960's. You can always tell the difference by the dorsal fin. A goldfish has a concave dorsal fin and a Crucian has a convex dorsal fin. So that was definitely a Goldfish in your video. To my Knowledge there are no Crucians in Australia . Hope this helps.

Thanks mate. I love a feed of fresh yellowbelly. I find the 35 to 45cm size is best. In rivers they can be nice up to and a bi over 50, but in lakes where they don't have to battle the current anything over 50cm is usually rough. It's amazing how something so nice to eat can turn to crap so quickly. Haha 😂

with Mirror Carp (and lether carp aka carp with no scales at all), yes they were believed to originally have been bred for food (although this is not a fact as it hasn't been proven) in Asia as having less scales made it easier to prepare but really they are just a genetic mutation from common carp. the reason why they are actually rare is because Mirror carp can breed with common carp (as all mirror carp are still techniocally common carp) and a offspring of a common carp and a mirror carp will more then likely look like a common carp, if Mirror carp breed with Mirror carp the offspring will always be more mirror carp, when two common carp breed there is an extremely low chance of a Mirror carp being born (like a genetic mutation in any animal) however if one of the carps ancestors was a mirror carp the chances increase although are still low, this is why Mirror carp exist in wild envorioments but are just very rare. A fun fact about Mirror carp, they were introduced to Madagascar (just mirror carp) for fish farming, they spread around the island and because they all were mirror carp all the offspring were mirror carp too but the interesting thing is that only 50 years after their introduction the fish started to evolve back into more fully scaled fish and now all mirror carp in Madagascar are fully scaled, this is believed to be because fully scaled fish have a better survival rate in the wild (scales offer protection) but it just goes to show how quickly an animal species can mutate and evolve to suit its enviroment but even then most animals take hundreds if not thousands of years to make those changes while the carp made those changes in less then 100 years. for all the flak and hate carp get they are actually a amazing and versitile fish being able to survive and even thrive in many different enviroments and then change their makeup to suit those enviroments, fish in small lakes and ponds are slow growing and are slow to reproduce while those in large bodies of water and rivers grow very fast and breed often, this is actually a trait most animals and fish do not have.
@robbiefishing

Hey mate thanks so much for the great info. I knew some of that, but you taught me a lot. Very interesting stuff. I agree about them being amazing. They're a pest, but a fascinating one for anybody who wants to learn. They are more resilient than our native fish and are masters at surviving hypoxic water events when most other species die.

@@robbiefishing yep they are a pest all over the world really, but as an animal they are remarkable, can live in just about any waterway (even brakish waters to some extent) from lakes that freeze over to warm water lakes in volcanic area's and although we say they "overpopulate" waterways and they do in comparison to native fish they will never overpopulate waterways in a way that they cant live. once they get to a stage where there are too many carp for the waterway they will slow down their breeding dramatically until they find the ideal number of fish for optimal living. this is why in ponds in places like England there are actually small carp populations as they have reached that optimal number, its also why you always see an explosion of baby carp around floods, more food and more water means the optimal amount of carp has increased. Carp really are evolution at its finest (as much as we hate to admit it).

@@robbiefishing they also survive hypoxic water events better because if the water isn't suitable for breathing they will gulp air to breath, if you ever see them in low oxygen water you will actually notice it.

@@comeatmebro3229 Yep, that bit I actually did know. Unlike many other fish they can get their oxygen from the air when they need to in order to survive tough times. It's a shame the native fish in the lower Murray River can't do the same.

That first fish didn't look that large. Carps can become at least more than 30kg.
