As an asian person I genuinely felt a real connection to boa. I'm not Chinese but I have had a complicated relationship with my mother and also had a strong relationship with her and food. It felt really genuine in the conflict of changing cultures between two generations.

For a movie which took 14 years ... you’d think the plot would be much deeper - like if it was gonna be this basic then why not have it set 14 years or even one or two years after I’ve heard there was two script - one about AI & one about Superhero’s being like celebrities

Maybe it’s just my love of The Incredibles blinding my judgement, but I LOVED The Incredibles 2. I was so excited I wanted to cry before, during, and after. The ambassadors were also supposed to be from other countries, coming together to endorse supers coming out of hiding. And Jack Jack is supposed to be a “Jack of all trades” with his powers, and Edna (I think) mentions that babies may have multiple powers, so that’s why he’s all over the place.

serious question; Why was everyone surprised that jack jack had powers when in the first one the whole reason that the bad guy is killed is because of jack jacks powers? THE FAMILY WAS RIGHT UNDERNEATH HIM! also jack jack had a suit made for him in the first movie so the entire Edna mode part was only used so they can make a short about that night.
@alexanderluna4598
@alexanderluna4598 6 жыл бұрын
Jack jack and syndrome were hundreds of feet in the air, where aircrafts are allowed. I’m sure you can’t pick out all the details of an airplane let alone a tiny baby. Also, jack jack wasn’t at Edna’s for a suit. Mr incredible went to her because he needed a babysitter. It was only because Edna found out he had powers that she was inspired to create a better suit for him that could control his erratic behavior.
@BRANDON-pe9vv

she only made enhancements for some of the powers we know of. like his flammability, goblin transformation, and dimensional travel. other powers like his lazer eyes, multiplication, and giant form havent been worked on yet. edna did the most she could with the small time she had with jack jack.

okay all i have to say is bao made me cry. i immediately understood what it was about, even not being asian/knowing a lot about asian culture. yes, it’s about asian culture with parents and them being protective and not wanting their kids to grow up, but it’s also universally about mothers and fathers watching their child grow away from them as they get older. the reason the child was a dumpling was because he was her fragile baby. she took care of him when he got beat up, along with the regular things like she spent time with him. she watched over him all his life and then seeing him not want to spend time with her anymore was heartbreaking- for most mothers, i’m assuming. even when he got older, she still saw him as a fragile dumpling. and of course, that wasn’t real life. she had woken up from a dream, or was daydreaming or maybe just thinking about how he grew up so fast. it was metaphorical and a very good analogy. and then of course the heartbreak of losing your child to not only somebody else, but also almost losing them to a new culture that they’ve grown up in, and eventually coming to terms and accepting that he’s grown up and being open minded about him exploring a new culture, as well as staying with his traditions.

I just realized one of my major issues with this movie, aside from it not being about the Incredibles fighting crime together. It doesn't ever really get as real as the first one. Now before I say this, yes it's a cartoon fictional world and I know it's suppose to be silly. But what I love so much about the first one is that despite Syndrome being cooky and silly, his motivation behind his crime and threats felt very real. One of my favorite scenes in the first movie is when Elastigirl sits down with Dash and Violet saying "These people will kill you if they get the chance" and then seeing that yeah, these guards aren't fucking around they're trying to kill those kids. I never felt that way with this one. Even if there were peoples lives at stake it always felt canned. It never got as raw as, oh my god Syndrome isn't going to stop chasing Mr. Incredible until he thinks he's dead or jesus that guard is taunting a girl in her teens while looking for her in the water so that he can shoot her.

Oh, god. The son left with the fiancée and the mom was very lonely and resented about it so she fantasized about her son being with her again. So when he comes back and gives her food as a sorry and they cry is a “sorry, mum I dun fuckdup.” So he comes back for some reason and they make dumplings. THE END. It was lovely and I cried so let me be.

With reference to Bao it was a reflection of how integral (and special) food is in Asian culture, especially dumplings (think about the extensive time and effort they put into making them and how they vary within the various Asian cultures). I think this really came to a head when she cooked the large meal and he just left. The dad wasn’t present in the short because he was working (he is the breadwinner while she raises Bao)...honestly it made perfect sense to me once I saw Bao wasn’t a dumpling but rather her actual child

Would this movie have been better if they had the twist of the brother being the villain, not the sister? Cause, like you said, she seemed pretty villainy from the start - weird outfits, constantly sounding bizarre and drunk - and the guy seemed to only have their best interests at heart, so would it have been more exciting if they made the nice guy the villain and the weird person not complicit?? Oh, wait, they basically already did that with Big Hero 6, nevermind, just go watch Big Hero 6...

If they were going to start right after The Incredibles 1, I think the boy that Violet liked should have learned about the family's secret identities, but he's brought into the family, sort of like Marilyn Munster, as the non-Incredible tag-along who is somehow involved in all of their adventures? Instead, this was just....Incredibles? All of the voice actors were so noticeably older than they were portrayed. You could practically hear everyone's dentures slipping.

eh, the tech makes sense if you compare it to superhero movies in a contemporary setting. like, if we can get Iron Man’s entire suit of armour folding out of a little button on his hand, heroes in 1962 can have tiny cameras and a cool motorbike.

It made me cry, it was funny, and I never want to watch it again And Incredibles 2, I found it to be a really fun ride all the way through! I thought the sister being the villain was semi surprising, because I really expected it to be the brother? Not sure why, but in the reveal scene, I just wanted to shout “GET OUT OF THE HOUSE” at Elastagirl, because the sister was giving bad vibes at that point

I was so excited for this review! Overall I enjoyed the video and loved you guys kiking about the movie. I only disagree about some major points you hit on. For one, I guess you didn't have this impression when watching the first Incredibles, but the Underminer was like a huge cliffhanger for a lot of people. I never saw it as like "oh and then they live their life fighting crime". I always saw it as like "oh shit is this the new villain for the next movie?". So I think there were a decent amount of people that were expecting it to pick up at that Underminer fight. For two, the reason Bob had this "1960's I have to provide for my family" mentality, was because the movie takes place in the 1960s haha. So this makes perfect sense that Bob would think this way. It would actually make less sense and be more of a preachy message if Bob was like "women can do anything men can do!". What's the point of using the 60's motif without utilizing some real social issues that existed in the 60s? Thirdly the point of the movie was this idea of does society need to rely on "superheroes" or should they rely on themselves. That was what that story of the parent's death was getting at. I feel like you were too concerned with the semantics around it haha. Finally the sister's motivation made perfect sense to me and didn't seem confusing at all. The brother took the route of idolizing superheroes after a traumatic event and the sister went the opposite route of demonizing them. She couldn't "do nothing" because her brother was trying to recreate their image. The brother being evil also seemed like an obvious red herring to me. I was happy the movie subverting people's expectations with the twist that the brother was ignorant to it the whole time. I think the brother being evil as well would have been more obvious and generic.

I get what they were going for with Bao, but when she ate the dumpling and his clothes/glasses all I could think about is how that must have been really hard to swallow... not to mention that she's been walking around with it for days? Weeks? Months? Years? so it would be rotten and she definitely had to see a doctor after eating that.... Unless it was a dream, but they didn't set that up at all and even at the end it didn't seem like she woke up, it seemed as if she was awake the entire time

I have a mild form of epilepsy and I had friends warn me about scenes all while trying to avoid major spoilers. Like, they’d tell me, “when Elastigirl enters the old apartment, there’s a bunch of flashing lights in the fight scene”, or something like that so I knew what to look out for but I didn’t know specifically what was up with the plot, so I just closed my eyes during those parts. And that kinda sucked bc I really wanted to watch those action scenes, but the flashing lights were way more frequent than I thought they’d be. But it wasn’t too bad for me in the end, as I’d much rather be safe than sorry. Plus I went with my sister so she just told me straight up when the flashing lights started/ended. I missed like a collective maybe 5-10 minutes of the film’s action scenes, but I still had an enjoyable time I guess? I do agree about the plot holes and weird stuff that didn’t make sense story wise, but I loved the animation and fun character moments, though in the end I do prefer the first one. I think a third film could potentially work if they make a really fantastic script, and I was really digging your idea of Violet going to college, Jack Jack learning to talk and starting daycare or something, or some potential twist villain who works with both superheroes and supervillains (though tbh I really am disliking Disney & Pixar’s latest twist villains. I just don’t feel the impact anymore. What happened to the days of Ursula, Scar, Syndrome, like actual villains?? hellooooo???)

This is how the plot should have gone in my opinion: First of all her name should have been the screensaviour rather than slaver and her motive should have been to take over everyones minds so no crime can take place. As you said devtech adverts everywhere for their new tech of contact lenses that record everything (a quick mention to their product when they’re having that first conversation with mr incredible, frozone and elastigirl). Then rather than the stupid train and ambassador thing some of the new heroes such as banshee, brick and reflux are villains and elastigirl, frozone and bob have to go to separate ones to try to stop them. When elastigirl stops banshee she says something like “I never get why you guys do this” and banshees head 180 turns eyes all green and says “the screensaviour will have their way” In her head she’s the saviour stopping all crime ever again because the superheroes aren’t good enough. I feel like this movie was dumbed down an awful lot probably for children when really it should have been made for older teens who grew up watching the incredibles

I think it's hilarious that you thought the mom in Bao was a teenage boy. When she came out, I instantly knew she was a middle-aged Chinese woman. Many of my mom's middle-aged friends have that short bob probably because of the influence of HK stars like Anita Mui, Sandra Ng, Susanna Kwan, and Lydia Shum. For me, it really resonated because as a first generation Chinese immigrant, you learn English and that becomes your main language where your parents stick to Chinese. And one of the best and only ways to connect is through food when you can't communicate through conventional language.

We didn’t get that weird cast introduction opener before the movie in Australia! I’m both happy and sad that I missed it. Also BAO was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen 😂 still brought me to tears though. Love you guys ❤️

Apparently it’s set in 1970 since elastigirl went missing in 1955 and it’s been 15 years since that

well for the word bao, baozi is chinese for steamed dumpling but baobei or baobao is a term of endearment for children. i guess that metaphor doesnt translate so well if ur not familiar with chinese. also as a teacher in china i see how much parents do and sacrifice to provide the best life for their kids by moving or sending their kids abroad for their education, and how sometimes that creates emotional distances as their kids grow up in a place where the traditions and customs are different to their own. n i think that this applies to the realtionship between alot of immigrant parents and their first generation kids in america. and the people ive talked to about it here in china relate deeply to the message.

Oh my god I loved Bao! I got the point of it pretty quickly though because my parents used to call me their little dumpling so that is where my mind first went!

I feel like Brad Bird is really just stuck trying to figure out what he wants to say with his films. He's worked through a lot more of it than he was able to say with Tomorrowland, but it's incredibly messy. This does show that Brad Bird is a really great action director though, all the action scenes were really fun in this movie.

Honestly my only gripe with this film was that the Jack Jack fighting the raccoon screen lasted about 19 minutes too long. It exceeded my expectations though coming off the kind of awkward fight with The Underminer.

You should Retro Review (my favorite) 90s Disney movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Underappreciated gem.

When I saw “Bao” it in theaters, everyone in the theaters was either sadden or confused when the lady ate the dumpling son. I remember bursting into laughter because I was not expecting it. Also I may have been under the influence which didn’t help my cause. Yeah, good times!
