I hatch a lot of duck eggs. Misting your eggs up til lock down really is a good idea. You did a good job but in my on opinion not opening the incubator after lock down keeps the humidity up and your hatch rate will go up. When your humidity goes down after a pip you shrink wrap your duckling

Something I’ve noticed about the light on the phone. It’s not bright enough to candle properly, and it actually generates a whole bunch of heat in that tiny spot. Put your finger right on the light while it’s on and hold it there for half a minute, and you’ll see what I mean. I don’t know if it’s enough to do anything, but a cheap, handheld LED flashlight I’ve noticed lets you see much better and doesn’t heat up as much. Also, I open my incubator every other day, sometimes daily. Just to candle them and see how they’re doing😝 If they start developing, they typically always hatch. I can’t remember a single time I’ve had a chick or duckling developing in the egg, then not hatch. Loved the video!

Great video! Hatching duck eggs is so challenging! I hand turned our Gold Shaw Farm eggs 3 times a day and had a hard time keeping up with that. You turning 5 times a day shows real dedication! Thanks for talking a bit about the khaki/cayuga duck. I didn’t even think about that as a possibility. We also had a darker egg and it’s definitely larger and darker that the other khaki ducklings.

@@allieblack5791a great way to incubate especially sent eggs is upright, air sac/wide end up, and in a container you can prop up. Put an egg carton under one end and shift it to the other end every time you want to turn. Increased hatch rates for eggs shipped from hatcheries. If not shipped eggs, full turning helps.

I have a similar incubator - worked well 1 season, but then became very unreliable, so I bought another model which works very well for my chicken and quail eggs (56 egg incubator from China). Will try it soon on shipped duck eggs and hope that some will hatch (at least 30% would be great). Will see. Thank you for your video.

Great job Tiffany, yeah I bet it was kind of hard to keep up manually turning those eggs 5 times a day. I remember my dad brought me home some mallard ducks when I was about 8 years old. One Drake and two hens. Those 3 ducks wound up to be about 35 in about 2 years. Which is not an awful lot but we did ate some of the eggs. But I wouldn't let Daddy dispatch any of the Ducks. LOL

I love that you shared the hatch. I agree that opening up the incubator may have something to do with the hatch rate, although mama ducks do have to eat, so their eggs do cool off when they go eat. You said something about the humidity being 88%,I think you said? That might be a bit high. Also, I don't think you have to turn them so often. I forget what the temp was towards the end, yet it *seemed* a bit low to me (I'm no eggspert, yet from what I read, it seemed so.) Matt at "50 Ducks in a Hot Tub" has a LOT of experience hatching duck eggs & has many videos on his channel. He's talked about humidity and temperature in his hatches too. Also, you might ask the hatcheries who hatch ducklings what they do for turning, humidity and temperature. If you get any your first time you're doing great! You did a great job! We all learn from doing best, I think! I subscribed. It'll be great to see how the little ones progress! Thanks for sharing! Now I'm wondering if I could just hatch eggs for others? I don't have room for more than a few chickens, which I have, but hatching would be SO much fun! Hatching exotics like pea birds (peacocks/pea hens) would be incredibly fun. I'd have to have places for them to go though. Hmm...
@OurOrganicLife
@OurOrganicLife 3 жыл бұрын
I was maintaining the humidity between 75-85% but sometimes it would fluctuate and I don't know if it was because of the monitor malfunctioning or what. I definitely want to try my hand at hatching exotics down the road, thank you so much for watching! ^_^

Certain species the egg will give you hints of what it could be, like I knew they were cayuga or half cayuga because they had the black tint on the shell. dud means that the egg did not developed it could be that it wasn't fertilized or just didn't take which can happen. :) There are incubators that have turners that are better suited to duck eggs I just don't have that so I elected to turn by hand

I need advice from anyone who knows -- For the first time this year I tried incubating Call Duck eggs. I bought a Farm Innovator 4250. Instructions were given to keep the temp at 99.5 and humidity at 55, which I did. Egg turner was programmed to turn 3x/day. My turner looks like yours. First clutch - they developed fine until week 3 then stopped. Second clutch - exact same thing. Third clutch - I gave up and put the few I had under my chickens. Other than the turning issue you mentioned, what else could have gone wrong? How much of a turn do you do each time on the eggs? I was so heartbroken.

Leave the egg shells in there until all the eggs have hatched or you turn the incubator whichever comes first usually I will give them 3-4 days to hatch unless there are signs of a late Hatcher then I’ll extend it to give them a chance :)

I think you may have overloaded your incubator. It must have taken quite a while to turn all those eggs, with your lid open for so long. I'm currently hand turning a batch of 15 eggs (for some reason my turning mechanism isn't working) and I mist them every time I'm done. Hopefully that will solve the problem. The very best way I've found to hatch duck eggs--- put them under a broody hen, preferably an Araucana. Silkies are good too, but duck eggs are a little big for them to turn. So sorry you had a bad hatch. It's almost impossible not to get attached to the little boogers, even still in the egg. 💔

Duck eggs need to be cooled almost daily. And misted don't hurt anything either. Cause it kinda simulates the mother coming back on the eggs with a wet body. Is that all that hatched out of them was the 6? Just wondering.

excellent piece of advice! Thank you! I will definitely try this next time! They definitely were cooled daily as I was hand turning them 3-5 times a day, but I wasn't misting them. I will definitely be trying that next time.

I look after ducks every year and the saddest time ever was last year when my first duck of 2020, Chadder, went missing randomly. There have been reports of a young male duck with the appearance of Chadder down the road and my daughters have found ducks like him so things are turning good but I still miss the poor little thing.

Ducks are not supposed to eat for the first 24 hours, they are still absorbing the nutrients from the egg, so it's best not to take them out of the incubator for 12 to 24 hours so they can completely dry, they will eatd and drink the next day, and they cant go in water to swim for the first week, so on the 7th day of having your ducks you can put them in a bowl, sink, any water as long as you are watching, ducklings need to be taken out of the water after a bit, you just have to watch because if you leave your ducklings in the water they will get tired and drown, and make sure you take out wet bedding in the brooder because it can make your ducks sick, and 1 last thing that's important is the oil glands of the duck that make them water proof is not developed in ducklings when they are a week old so they will get cold, so dry them off and put them underneath heat in the brooder

Do you think my eggs will have a chance at surviving still or did I mess up and correct it too late :(

HELP NEEDED!!! Any help greatly appreciated- we have just rescued 10 duck eggs they appear to be around the 2 week mark at a guess- we have always had wild ducks living on our larger size pond (not quite a lake but bigger than a normal pond) since moving to our house in 1993 however this year the water level has been so so much higher than normal the ducks are struggling to find safe places to lay eggs- a new female had laid eggs in a very unsafe place atop tiled steps in a big heavy (immovable as it turns out) planter with high sides than would either just trap them after birth or if they got to the edge and tried to jump off onto the tiles even if it was onto the top they’d never survive the height drop- we tried everything we could think of makeshift ramps just couldn’t get them secure and into a position it’d b safe and now the mother appears to have got spooked and we haven’t seen her since yesterday morning well we didn’t want to give up on them and in have brought them inside my house overnight nearby a radiator and wrapped in a warm big furry fleece jumper - ice googled for some info and now really worried I should have left them outside alone (was very cold last night) also just read they won’t likely survive without an incubator- am I too late- any help and advice at all - Thank You 🙏

The mother duck doesn’t coke backbone them anymore so she might know that none of these eggs are still alive.

The only reason I did not wash the eggs is in doing so you are removing the protective coating called the bloom that birds coat their eggs in the protect the developing chick or duckling from bacteria. In washing it I would actually be at higher risk of bacterial growth in the egg.

@@Yooperchic sometimes the duckling doesn’t hatch because the membrane has wrapped around and the bird has very little room to move due to low humidity during incubation. they get stuck in the egg and are unable to pip. i’m not sure if the correct term for opening the incubator during hatch is shrink wrapped though, i’ve always thought that was a sticky chick/duckling.
