The OLD incubus albums; 'Enjoy incubus', 'Fungus Amongus', & 'S.C.I.E.N.C.E.' were just their own spin on Primus meets Phish meets RHCP. They even said so themselves. It reflected their teenage youth and angst. They grew up a bit and made 'Make Yourself' & 'Morning View', two albums that Mike admitted to not really trying too hard creatively on and they were essentially the same album. He said they wanted big, simple anthem rock & that's what they did. Then they ran into legal troubles, lost their bass player, got a NEW band member and made 'A Crow Left Of the Murder' & 'Light Grenades'. Musically, these two albums are really too complex for the average listener to take in and enjoy; they reflect a Frank Zappa, gonzo artist vibe. Then, 'If Not Now, When?' was released and it sounded like they were tired and wanted to just chill for a bit. In interviews, they really didn't know if they would even be able to make another album. They thought they were through. It was definitely a far cry from their ragging funk days but it was heartfelt, stood on it's own, and reflected their age and maturity. Now, they have a new record label, a new manager, and it sounds like they have leaned a little bit more towards noodling and experimenting like they did on 'A Crow Left of The Murder'. This music isn't pop/radio friendly. No station would allow all those swirling, noisy effects into their airwaves. It's really still very much 'punk' to a degree. Not unlike EVERY album that has been released by them, it's slightly different. Using new instruments, new effects, new studios, toys etc. People are saying it's too electronic sounding? Uh, they have DJ in their band? A musician who, not unlike the rest of them, gets new toys and develops new skills from album to album. Let the man flex! It's a bold move by them to make this kind of music. It's passionate, esoteric, and inspiring. Dig deeper and give the song a few listens.

Well said! You understand the history of the band very well. I'm glad there are some fans who aren't of the "only S.C.I.E.N.C.E was good drone variety" and that you recognize it's different from today's pop/radio friendly music.

Preach! There are so many people hating on this new song. It's like they've listened to one album and one album only. You can't nor should you expect all of their material to sound the same. Experimentation is so greatly needed in a time when music is predictable and basic. Incubus is doing that and they're slapped on the wrist for not living up to very specific ideals of what THEIR music should sound like. Great history breakdown kudos to you man. We know good music when we hear it.

People who can't create are usually the biggest whiners. They can listen and criticize all day like it is their job, but could never actually get a job in a field that had them use any semblance of creativity. Provoking them always makes things worse because their general negative attitude just snowballs into attacks instead of a level of human interaction comfortable enough to call "Human". So enjoy they song, I enjoyed it, but my favorite is still their old S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album back in the day. I am glad Incubus is back though, been a long time.

Just because somone criticizes somthing doesn't mean they have to be musicians either.. what's the point of art if it's not subjective, like there's a reason why music is art.. it's so people can be opinionated about it. Otherwise they WOULDN'T make money because people wouldn't even have a second thought about changing the song. Like ever heard of constructive criticism..

The way these guys came up with this kind of music is simply amazing. I mean every album came out literally of a different taste from the previous ones, yet the balance of such music construction and lyrics is just overwhelming. The fact that they're not going with the flow of trends as the the music industry does these days makes them more uniquely different. And there's no sense in saying that their music gets old or never sounded the same or whatever negative thoughts therein. They're artists of their own craft.

I don't get all the hate. Nu-metal fan boys stuck on the nostalgia train, perhaps? Time to grow with the band, me thinks. Too much bitching without any constructive feedback. There's a lot of love that's gone into this track and it's polished to shine. I actually think these guys have been trying to find their sound for a while and this is getting real close to where they ought to be. The vocals fit the bill as it just stacks up. Well done guys. I feel it from start to finish.
@52BLUE10 жыл бұрын
***** They originally got piggybacked by Korn through the first Family Values tour and their original content had white guy raps over alternative tunes 'New Skin', 'Certain Shade Of Green' etc etc. I don't blame them for moving on from it when they did. I love their work from that era but Nu-metal came and went like busting a shot of nos through a whipped cream dispenser. Fun but short lived. Only the good bands to have come into popularity around that time, continue to release quality content today. Deftones are still at the top, for me. Who also purposefully moved away from that kind of sound in fear of also being pigeon-holed. Can anybody say Limp Bizkit? Their best work came in the form of the The Unquestionable Truth EP and that got stunned by most of their fans because they just wanted more of the same. I give credit where credit is due and by bands deciding NOT to play it safe by rehashing the same thing. Instead taking risks to expand on their sound. Only a few make it through, though.

I agree totally. I tried to make the same point in my post and was pretty quickly "shot down" by a lot of people. The guys in the band are nearly *40* (ten years from *50*; just to make a point) I say, given that fact alone, they're doing what they do tactfully and are exactly where they should be. They found a formula that had mass appeal on Make Yourself, a GREAT album by the way, I'm not denoting ANY of their work, and they used that formula again on Morning View. Granted, Morning View had different tones, textures, and production styles, but it was still the same big, everyone-sing-along, anthem rock format. They could have very easily continued to make albums in that vein but they decided to push themselves creatively and take on new ideas, as any worthwhile artist does. This latest album will just be another chapter in their evolution. That's what kills me. SCIENCE and MAKE YOURSELF, lyrically, were very much preaching about changing, evolving, damning the man, growing, etc. That's EXACTLY what they've done. Honestly, they really do not care what the "fans" expect of them. They have said on multiple occasions, they go into the studio and make what feels right, they do not go in the studio to meet anyone's expectations. The opening of this track is being carried by Kilmore. He's obviously using some type of computer software to make a beat. He doesn't normally carry a song like that. It's not an overproduced pop song, it's an Incubus song that's letting Kilmore take the lead. I say good for them and him. I can't wait for the album. One more thing, people keep complaining that Incubus has become "overproduced pop music". I can't understand that. If they made overproduced pop music, they would be dominating the airwaves the way Katy Perry and Justin TImberlake do every time they release an album. Incubus hasn't been a "mainstream" name since 2002. The reason their latest albums have a sheen to them is because they have afforded themselves the ability to work with one of the best rock producers from the 90's, Brendan O'Brien; who's resumé includes Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, & Rage Against The Machine. So if people think that producers and studios have gotten the way of their sound, then it's Brendan O'Brien doing it. Which is a redundant statement, because he isn't. Geez.

All my favourite Incubus tracks have not blown me away on the first listen. They're growers. I would feel initially indifferent to these tracks, hearing them once and then moving on to more accessible songs. But a few days would pass. And I'd get the urge to have another listen. It still wouldn't be amazing, but it would be a BIT better. Only a couple of weeks later when that song was playing in my head constantly would I realise how great it was. After a couple of weeks from my first listen, Absolution Calling is firmly lodged in my head, and I couldn't be happier.

This song definitely resonates with me, spiritually. I do not egoically compare their old sounds with their new music, I just appreciate and accept their musical and spiritual mission. This lyrical video makes it obvious to those waking up into a conscious awakening that absolution IS calling. Whether or not you are there, "It's like an intuition or a feeling in the air, an intangible impression that's always everywhere." Be the present moment and accept what is. Resist nothing. "It's an open invitation, come see the sights of sages. We've been a pride of lions so afraid to leave our cages." I am fortunate to have the opportunity to listen and be a fan of Incubus ever since they started. Thank you Incubus for all that you do and continue to do! "'Cause nothing can be broken when everything is one." We are ONE. Love yourself to evolve! One Love

I can hear a lot of their older styles compiled in this piece, and even though at first I thought it sounded a little confused I liked it for the sheer fact that it is new work by a band I have loved for years. When I listened a second time, the bias went away, and I really do like what Incubus has done here, ESPECIALLY since Brandon was in Bali during the initial write. This IS Incubus. Its very jam-session inspired, much like their old work. Then you can hear that it was refined, and refined, until it was keened to the product we have here. Most importantly, it is fresh... THEY SOUND EXCITED! No doubt did Ben have fun playing that bass line. Brandon's lyrics are mature and his singing is jumpy and has attitude. Mike weaves in and out of the song with classic Incubus riffs that feel youthful and refreshing leading up to him and the rest of the boys cutting loose during his solo. Jose follows through as always with excellent drumming and DJ Kilmore obviously got to play with new effects that will define this album from the rest. In short, they are happy again. You can tell, and if nothing else, you can all agree with me when I say that I for one am more excited for their new projects than I have been for most of their albums. *Listener for 12 years

Incubus is a phenomenon for real. Their music has evolved beautifully. Thats the gem about them. They have the creative capacity to create such amazing music and its always good.. No matter the album. If you expect incubus to stay the same each album, then you just havent evolved with them. True musicians are open to different music nd not making an album that sounds like the last one like wtf is that?. Im glad they stayed true to themselves. The best decision they ever could do. In turn they still continue to create great music and alot of bands just dont have those qualitys. They've made such an impact on my life musically. B4 i die just let me atleast one djembe jam session with them maybe do some psychedelics and just converse about this weird experience from music to aliens. Fuckn i feel retarted compared to them . I love the layers on this. Multiple listens give you so many details to appreciate. I've loved you guys since S.C.I.E.N.C.E. And I can only love you more as you keep growing into the future.

This is an epic song, I can just imagine rocking out to this at their concert, it's such a high energy track. Hope they announce a New Zealand tour date soon. I would love to hear that solo/breakdown opened up to like a ten minute jam session when they play it live.

Its great to listen to them evolve and reunite. after 2011 everyone has been working on other projects with different influences. Then come together to see what creative harmony can be produced. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

I am madly in love with everything they do, each album in its own special way excites my soul. And I for one enjoy each step of their transformation and will never stop being a die-hard fan. They are one of the very few that can release a new style with each album, and I still love them as much as I always have. Who can listen to the same thing over and over anyway and not get bored? They are growing intrinsically, artistically, and musically. Yes, they have changed over the years, but so have you, so does everyone.

I personally look for a long-lasting, progression and evolution in current/relative musical artists. My heart/soul “go to” artists include classical, traditional/fusion jazz, & both quintessential pioneers of the genre Progressive and a few current live acts such as Radiohead, Tool, Muse, Phish, and Medeski, Martin & Wood when in the mood for a weekend of tuneskies. I’m also an admirer of bands that just can’t be defined or bottled to one, single genre. I admire the pioneers, even if they’re before my time, who’ve blended different styles of music. Styles & genres are (and will be exponentially) growing towards creativity & originality which can’t be forced or confined/bottled for later use. Sorry for rare rant/run-on sentences. Texting prose doesn’t have to be perfect; I’m learning

I love it! I don't what everyone's talking about that they want old incubus, this is Incubus! They have grown as musicians and the musicality level shows. They are awesome and I can't wait for the albums to come out. Also I've seen them live about 7 times and they are one of the fews bands that sound even better live than on the track. Kudos to them.

Been a fan of Incubus for many years, and really enjoying the direction they're taking with their music. I don't believe there is "over production" happening here, rather, it's just the right amount of production. Adding just enough layers to create new sounds and atmospheres, while not overshadowing the instruments and vocals.

I became addicted to this song. The bass line, the guitars, the whole groove and the great back vocals... the whole stuff is 'quite' okay! ;) really catchy hit in a good sense! ...and the arrangement is also rather brilliant. Good job guys! Incubus is back!

I think its great a band who lyricly included something on a deeper level with a positive vibe to it like you say and abit more indeepth view on things. It kind of reminds me tool lateralus. while the music is pretty bloody kool there is a lot more behind the making of it :)

I really love this. I still remember the first time I heard Incubus. First time I came to my friend's house when we just met in high school and she puts on the Make Yourself CD. It must have been like 2002 or 2003 and I was hooked. I've dropped so many bands I listened to as a teenager, totally "outgrew" them let's say. But these guys have staying power to me.

Too many of the same complaints from people (i.e. I only like S.C.I.E.N.C.E and every other album has gone down hill). I have been an Incubus fan since 1999 and have literally heard the same complaint for every single album. They expect Incubus to change to that one era and reject everything else. The best part is no matter what your opinion is, Incubus is going to change in whatever way they want. It's been the same way every album. If you want to critique their music, come up with something original besides "it's pop music" or "bring back S.C.I.E.N.C.E" or "everything was better with Dirk" because your words are flawed and they're absolutely meaningless. Think Incubus can't come up with original music? Most commenters on here can't come up with an original coherent thought so they parrot the same shit over and over, thinking they have something new and brilliant to say. Here's another thought. If you think S.C.I.E.N.C.E was the only good era for Incubus music, come up with a S.C.I.E.N.C.E cover band that plays only songs from the album and possibly any B-sides they had. Don't get too famous though because you'll be "mainstream" and don't ever change your sound because you'll be "pop music." It's sad how "fans" are incapable of constructively criticizing an album without spouting the same drivel.

incubus has grown their musical taste into the next level. I choose to grow up with them and enjoy every piece of art that they produce. this song sicks. and for your reminder the whining one, art is not comparable thing. it's between you enjoy it or going home and enjoy your silent night.
