I love the 5th point. I raise mini rex because it’s just me eating them. One mini rex is enough for two meals for me! I don’t need a whopping 10 pounder just as a flex! 💪🏻😂 I got laughed at in a few of the meat rabbit groups on fb for choosing such a small breed. And they were Not Nice with their ill-mannered comments. I left every single meat rabbit group except one well moderated group. Thank you for such a great, informative video!

Rabbits do need hay. It’s not a myth. Rabbits get overgrown teeth without hay. It is required.

I agree with at least half of these 😅 One caveat with hay, it is absolutely necessary IF you feed a whole foods diet. But it can be dried hay or in the form of fresh grass. As far as being social, well one day I'm going to get you down here to visit our colony. Once you see how they cuddle and co-parent their litters you may change your mind on that one. They may have been bred to live in cages, but that doesn't mean they thrive in cages. Just a thought.

Excellent video! One point though - stone fruit have cyanide not arsenic. Cyanide is the almond scented compound in stone pits, arsenic is a funky element on the periodic table.

Having raised rabbits 30+ years in different climates I have always lived in a rural area. Each property has different areas with different climates. I lived in north snow and ice rabbits were on the warmest part of property. Now in upper south in coolest areas. Look at your property. Look around your property. I always gave hay free choice with container outside the cage. No contamination. I also use rabbit tractors in the summer. Lots of ways to economize.

You are correct! every property/situation is different. I only wished to point out some blanket misconceptions concerning raising rabbits. Thanks for the comment!

Agree with him with him with everything except for the point; "'myth': rabbit are social creatures..." .i think though we have bred them for a 1000 years, i think it's not enough time to undo the core rabbits's evolution instinct that took a few millions years of evolution. I wish colony raising gets adopted by home sheders.
@IndependenceAcresHomestead Жыл бұрын
I have no problem with colony raising, if it doesn't put your rabbits in danger of disease and you have the space to do so. It is conditional and not the best for everyone. It is always best to start with controllable situations and reduce variables for failure. And, rabbits are not social creatures, even their instinct pushes them to fight for the best location, resources, and mates. Their social nature is more from centuries of selective breeding to make them calm and less aggressive than from any natural instincts.

The human scent thing was explained to me with wildlife as Stray cats, raccoons etc often follow human scent to find food. 🤷♂️

Do you recommend kindling totes?
@IndependenceAcresHomestead2 жыл бұрын
In some situations, they may be beneficial. However, I would probably never use them in our cages. We prefer nest boxes with square corners so the fit snuggly into the corners of the cages. Any gaps are prime locations for a wayward kit to get stuck and "disappear" easily.
@myname79142 жыл бұрын
Curious if you would eat a wild rabbit? I'm assuming it would have to be cooked really well to kill parasites. Don't worry, after your talk at HOA, we will be raise domestic rabbits. I was the guy in the 2nd row with a hat and a beard. Hahaha
@IndependenceAcresHomestead2 жыл бұрын
I would, but only if harvested in the proper hunting season. (Hat tip to our government overlords.😁) They taste different and have a much smaller muscle structure, but still good eating!

@@IndependenceAcresHomestead #SorryBrandon. I'm assuming the seasons are set up so that does are not taken while they have kits. Not sure if that applies to rabbits. I do agree it's generally good to obey laws.

And those cages are too small and i see zero hay which is bad because rabbits need hay
@IndependenceAcresHomestead Жыл бұрын
The rabbits all have 6 square feet of floor space, which is the recommended space allotment according to the ARBA. Hay is not required if the rabbits are receiving a pellet that is nutritionally balanced. It is fed as a treat a few times a week. Hay alone is deficient in the vitamins, minerals, and protein that rabbits need to be healthy and thrive.

Please never keep your rabbits on wire flooring. Rabbits have very sensitive feet and they get sore hocks on wire.
@IndependenceAcresHomestead Жыл бұрын
Wire flooring is not the culprit in this case. Sore hocks are usually a result of poor genetics or improperly built cages. Wire floors allow feces and urine to drop free of the floor preventing urine scald and manure build up. They are ideal for outdoor rabbit enclosures.
