I'm a sound desing student and I have tried to reproduce this slap-like raw punches a couple of times without success. It seems so simple but actually it's a pain to recreate with minimal quality. For me it's the best sounding fight scene that I can recall watching ever and it doesn't fail to awe me everytime I see it.

Wondering if Tylers dialogue was rerecorded as ADR of it is the on set performance! Sound in this clip is amazing thanks for the video!

This is amazing. I would like to ask you a question, how do you manage to have these separate sound design tracks ?? You ask the productions ?? (I hope not to ask you to reveal your manufacturing secrets) ^^ Thank you.

Amazing! One question about the second chapter though: why is dialogue or things like laughter/cheers categorized as expressionistic?
@INDEPTHSoundDesign
@INDEPTHSoundDesign 4 жыл бұрын
Good question! In the case of Fight Club, voiceover and Tyler's dialogue is an expression of Jack/Narrator's POV. I'll admit, there are a few things in this video that seem a little arbitrary, but this is the way it was categorized on the Blu-ray special feature. In particular, the "Welcome to Fight Club" scene doesn't really have any truly expressionistic sounds except for Tyler's voice. Here's how it was explained on the Blu-ray for that scene: "As Tyler Durden lays down the rules, Ren Klyce and his team establish the environment of Fight Club through the balance of dialogue and ambient crowd reactions like spitting, can-kicking and other carefully choreographed 'spontaneity.' In this first basement fight sequence, 'flat hard packing sounds' of hand-to-hand combat are mixed with crowd noise and other ambient effects. The result emphasizes the early camaraderie of Fight Club, especially compared to the design of 'Angel Face's Beating.'"

@@INDEPTHSoundDesign Thanks for the reply mate! I understood why it was the case for narration, but not for dialogue (which is definitely diegetic). I guess they had their own internal rules for sound design and what fit which category :P It's really weird though, because in the two chapters after, Tyler's voice is naturalistic. Anyway!

@@thisisfyne Haha no you're totally right. I actually had a tough time trying to name the separated elements so I just went with what was listed on the Blu-ray. My theory is that they provided some of those elements (music, dialogue) for context but the stem is FEATURING naturalistic/expressionistic sound, not necessarily saying that's the only thing on the track. There was probably a better way to present this, but I still think listening to the separated elements is useful along with the commentary provided.
