Just Let Go | The Philosophy of Fight Club

Life is short. It’s ending one minute at a time. Why waste it on fulfilling other people’s expectations? This is just one of those questions presented in a novel written by Chuck Palahniuk named Fight Club.
The film version of Fight Club directed by David Fincher, starring Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter, could be considered one of the best and most impactful movies ever made when looking at its reception and ongoing popularity.
Fight Club isn’t shy of over-the-top violence, contains a fair amount of explicit language, and, of course, the obnoxious behavior of its characters. However, it’s definitely more profound than just men coming together to beat each other up.
The story is built on several thoughtful concepts that are interesting and possibly applicable to our own lives.
It tells a story about a generation of people without a clear purpose, without hope, raised with false expectations, and repressed by ever-tightening social norms. What if our existence is pointless? What if God doesn’t like us? What if we’re nothing more than a compost heap? How do we find meaning in a meaningless existence?

This movie was a major pivot point in my life: it changed my whole world view. It took my nihilism and gave it an outlet. Not in fighting, but in the way I shaped my personal philosophy. Ultimately, my fight club became skydiving. I get as many of those "near life experiences" as I needed in order to turn down the volume on my nihilism.

The whole "Self improvement is masturbation, now self destruction..." quote, is explained in more detail in the book. Self improvement is a lot of work for a small reward (just like masturbation), but self destruction is the opposite, it is fairly easy to leave permanent scars, so it is little work for a big reward. If you like the dark humor in the movie, you will love the book, there are so many small hints and tidbits. That being said, it is one of the most true to the book movies ever made.

The fact that the fight club itself was simply metaphorical in the sense of enduring a lifestyle of self inflicted hardship - like taking a cold shower at 6am, doing nofap, etc. - and people took it literal and started fight clubs, armed robberies because of the movie shows you we are still space monkeys even after being shown the truth. The idea is to live authentic, be in the moment, embrace hardship, discipline and detachment, not to literally start a fight club and your own version of project mayham 🤦‍♂️

Movie is such an inspiration. That oppressive cubical life. The sick being ignored. People living but not really doing what they love. It is what many of us face in the real world. I've seen a lot of hollow people who work 100 000$/y jobs. They take opiods, drink alcohol, can't hold onto relationship. They are trying to fill their lives with materials such as houses, cars, e.t.c. But deeply in soul they are still hollow, lost and alone. On the other hand I've seen people having a 30 000$/y job who live relaxed life within their means. They have what they want, they surround themselves with people who care about what's within them, not what's within their wallet. They use money and material things as instruments to reach something, that would bring them fulfillment and not as AN endgoal and fulfillment itself. It's really doesn't matter how much money do you make or where do you live. All that's important is how you view the world. Everything is within our heads.

Fight club changed my life in a way and made me stood up for myself. So I punched the hell of out of my bully which resulted in a fight that I lost and me being in hospital with a broken jaw. After my recovery I challenged him to a fair first fight. This time I won only suffering a black eye and a nose bleed. Now he respects me for standing up to him. And after years of feeling afraid of even leaving my house I can walk like nothing's bothering me anymore. In that chaos I felt peace and a sense o relief.

The release of Fight Club marks a turning point in my life. It changed my entire view of the world. I traded my consumer lifestyle for a life of philosophy. My fight club were street races, wich funnily enough started to pop up right during that time. During the day I was nothing more than a corporate drone, at night though I pushed myself to my limits. The near death experiences, the adrenaline... It was the first time many of us truly felt alive.

I think the real meaning behind fight club is finding the balance between two extremities: 1)being trapped in comfort/ consumerism to the point where one loses sense of self/ purpose. 2) being obsessed with change or a certain ideal (ultra masculinity) to where it becomes destructive to the person itself and society.
