in 1990 there were 5 IIT with 1000 seats now in 2025 when my son will appear for JEE there are 23 IIT with 20k seats. I went to IIT and then IIM. My rank in 1993 was 101 in JEE. aIIT Kanpur is in Uttar Pradesh and was no. 1 IIT in our times, now it is n0. 4. UP is part of north india and not south India. The CSE branch is famous in IIT Kanpur because in 1964 they got IBM computer with them. It was the only IIT for many years to have a computer of their own. Now IIT Powai (Mumbai) is no. 1 followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Madras (CHennai). The speaker needs to update knowledge.
