I have travelled on the road that you took. That was several years back when I as part of a team from Kolkata came to Shillong to audit the accounts of a BSF batallion stationed in the Umpling Hills of Shillong. Of course, the BSF had arranged that visit to Mawlinnong and Dawki. This road was in pretty bad shape at that time. Apart from betel nut trees, there are also bay leaf plants by the roadside. We had our lunch at a BSF BOP located on this road and saw with our own eyes how the BSF devote themselves to protect our country in a jungle terrain infested with mosquitos. The BSF personnel took us past the Indian border on no man's land and BGB (at that time BDR) came over as we clicked photos with them. We had returned with fond memories of the emerald green Umngot River. On a second visit and also for the same purpose, we found that Mawlinnong had changed somewhat. The place was marketing itself to tourists and the earlier charm of the village was definitely missing.
