I took this train up to Darjeeling in 1985,seating on the foot board of the bogey next to the engine,watched the operating staff very closely,all of whom we're Nepalese men,very energetic & jovial. Now diesel locomotive has replaced the steam engine, yet the journey is very charming if one has time to watch the meandering sojurn through the mountains.
@AndyDandanFisherSteam5 жыл бұрын
There were diesels operating many of the regular service trains when I recorded this in 2006. It's to be hoped, though, that a fleet of steam locos will be kept operable for the sake of India's heritage. In reality the diesels are almost as bad polluters as the steam locos, however, the pollution isn't as visible as the particulates from a steam loco. They are still destroying our climate though ..... Andy
@LazyTourer2 жыл бұрын
@@AndyDandanFisherSteam At present the steam engines are only operational for joy ride service. Between Darjeeling and Ghum Station via Batasia loop. Pulling Maximum of 3 carriage depending on the number of ticket sold. There are 2 heritage joy ride service per day. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. Though often the evening service gets cancelled due to rain, visibility or poor weather conditions. Steam loco service is no longer operational for the entire route. Though Indian Railways official press release states that for movie production, one may apply for booking an entire train and if logistically possible on given dates, Indian Railways may provide the service with steam loco. All steam engines are now located at Darjeeling steam loco shade. Loco Shade is right beside the station at Darjeeling, right on the main road. Many locos are getting cannibalized to keep few alive for the joy ride service. It's a hearth breaking scene to watch them in such tear down condition. Steam Loco fleet are now well over 125+ years old but those which are on active service, they are just mesmerizing to watch. Rode the heritage joy ride service few weeks back. Wish they had kept at least one running between NJP (Siliguri) and Darjeeling. However, local Railway staff says, it's better this way. At least this smaller joy ride duty would keep the steam service alive for many more years by extending the life span of the remaining engines. Thanks.

The steam engine is fueled with furnace oil burner but that's a turn off for me because I like the smell of coal fired smoke (like seen in this video ) more than the whitish smoke coming out of the oil fired engine of NMR (though both are pollutants of course)

Civic sense is lacking.

@AndyDandanFisherSteam5 жыл бұрын
Most of these locos were built in the UK with 3 built by Baldwin in the USA and another 3 built in India. You make some good points about steam locos that I agree with. The diesel locos that operate on this line also pollute the environment but with less visible gases (and of course no steam to see). Diesels also slip their wheels but, again, it's less easy to see than on a steam loco. These steam locos have been working for up to 130 years. The diesels won't last even a small fraction of that time! Andy

I am not an expert on pollution, but I feel the engine emitting the black smoke is not that dangerous as compared with the petrol and diesel pollution created by vehicles in a city. Here the engine smoke is only carbon and steam. But the cars/trucks burning petrol or diesel are producing carbon monoxide which is, if inhaled in excess, can kill.

why train is reversing then forwarding
@AndyDandanFisherSteam8 жыл бұрын
The climb up to Darjeeling is very steep and cannot be done in a straight line. There are two common ways of climbing into mountains - the spiral as seen at 3:20 and the "Z" shape or zig-zag as seen elsewhere in this clip.
@AndyDandanFisherSteam8 жыл бұрын
In a few places, the zig-zag is so long that it's too dangerous to push the train with the loco, so they run around the train and pull it with the loco in reverse.

I agree that steam locomotives are bad polluters. Most of what you can see in the smoke, though, are the particulates which fall to the ground rapidly. The real damage is done by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. These are given out in just as large a quantity by road vehicles, aircraft, ships and power stations. There are only a tiny number of steam locos left working and they are beautiful and fascinating machines. They are a valuable relic from our industrial past and need to be saved from destruction. The pollution from these few steam locos is TINY compared to the pollution from the billions of road vehicles, aircraft and ships in the world. Getting rid of just a handful of steam locomotives will make no difference to the world but getting rid of the pollution from road vehicles would probably sort the problem in one move. If you’d like to save our Earth from disaster, please get rid of your car or motor bike, don’t buy anything that has been delivered by air, sea or lorry, switch off your electricity at home, never go on holiday by aircraft or car. Not easy, is it? Andy
