Being from Mumbai, I got my driver's license by driving a car 20 feet forward and 20 feet in reverse. Then I got my motorcycle license without riding a motorcycle because the driving inspector told me he didn't have time to take my test and that I should just go home because he's going to pass me anyway.

My parents are originally from India, and when I showed my mom this video, she told me the story of how she got her license back in the 90s. The people at the testing center came to learn that she was about to get married to my dad and move with him to the US, and so they basically told her, “Oh, you’re not gonna be here long. Well, we won’t give you any trouble then” and gave her a license on the spot lol

As someone who got his license on a manual car in India, the driving "test" was driving around a mostly empty path on the license premises. However, the training to get to the test.. It was constant hell with real traffic driving in Mumbai and the instructor screaming profanities at me for every small mistake. I think due to this I can pick up manual relatively easy even after driving auto for more than 6 years. Also, after I got the license the instructor suddenly became the nicest guy lol. And this was about 12 years ago

People usually go out in their cars to battle traffic much before they get their license. That is mostly because the license doesn’t really deem you fit for indian roads, it’s just a piece of document that helps avoid any unwanted fines.

Well, I gave my driving test few months ago in India, and it's a lot tougher than that. Things have improved. I had to get a learners first by giving a written test. Then I had to wait for 1 month before giving my driving test. Then the driving test itself was very tough with a very high failure rate of around 60%. The test comprised of 4 tasks, namely Parallel parking, Hill stop start, Driving in 8, Reverse S. All these tests were done in a computerized test track with very specific time limits. And It was TOUGH !!! So I would say, Things have changed, and changed for good !

The RTO officer saw that i had come to the test with own car and didn't even want to test me. He just passed me. However the california dmv's drivers' handbook had helped me avert many accidents in my 5 years (76000km driving) of driving in India. So learn the basic etiquettes and follow them! 2 things i hate the most are blocking intersections and useless honking

The driving tests are usually very easy in India but in the Himalayan States they become very very difficult. Like tripling with the pedals, reversing uphill while stopping whenever the tester tells you to and many more things that even experienced drivers from the plains can barely do

Not entirely true. I'm from Mumbai and can easily travel down and up mountainous terrain. And yes, easily stop on a slope, reverse up a slope etc. The first time I did it on the western ghats, I found no problem. Why? Because even Mumbai has little hills like Malabar hill and Pali hill. We have a crazy road in pali hill literally called "zig zag road" which is a steep incline that continuously hairpins. Bottom line is, it doesn't matter whether it's at 3000 metres or 20 metres, a steep slope is a steep slope.

My driving test in Ahmedabad (India) RTO in 2012 was in an open field. I had to just get into the car and drive 50 meters staight to the other end and i passed the test. On this end another participant gets in and drives 50 meters in reverse to the original place and he passed. All participants had to do only only this.
