Ajanta is a group of thirty caves carved into the side of a cliff. Discovered in 1819 during an English tiger hunt, it is famous for its colorful plaster murals, dating from the 5th and 6th centuries, which illustrate scenes from the social life of the time. The thirty caves include five chaityas (temples) and 25 viharas (monasteries) of different sizes. Ellora contains 34 caves belonging to different Indian religions and remains an important place of pilgrimage.
