This was my first test match that I watched all the five days, each and every session. I was a school cricketer then and got a subsidised ticket on my own. No more running after elders and brothers to get a peek at the match.... Witnessed genuine pace bowling from Imran.

A great find. Good ol days! Never mind the comments about video quality. Fantastic rivalry between two cricket loving nations. I was in class 6 when this test was played. My late dad and I used to listen the live commentary on radio mostly. Two years earlier when IIndia visited Pakistan they lost 2-0 in a three test series. In this series of 1980 Pakistan lost 2-0 in a 6 test series. Players were treated loke royalties whenever they visited in either India or Pakistan. Please keepbon sharing gems whenever you can. Very nice comment. I was in Class 9 at that time at Calcutta and share similar memories. I went to the ground (Eden Gardens) on one of the days, but I don't remember which. Imran Khan was treated like a king at Calcutta and was the most popular cricketer in the city, including even the India team. Gossip was he was romancing a local actress in the city at that time.

The most resilient batsman on all kinds of wickets and conditions must be Syed Kirmani. There was a minimum guarantee of atleast 25 runs to frustrate the opposition. If only he had been promoted to higher spots. he would have created history.

I was at this match - my first ever! I was 10 years old and vividly remember the atmosphere and Gavaskar flicking Imran for a couple past Miandad at short leg off the first ball !! Think he made 44 or something! Super nostalgic 😊

Ehtesham-ud-Din - me being English remember him coming straight from league cricket to a test match at Headingly due to injured team mates. He pulled his hamstring, looked unfit but actually looked full of potential as a swing bowler. I hope he is well.

Thank you so much for posting this video. In the true spirit of it being a gentleman's game, despite the usual hostilities between the neighbors, Calcutta stood up on its feet to pay tribute to Asif Iqbal as he walked out of the cricket field for the last time. I had heard of this test and moments from many in the family, including my father, who was in the gallery. Since my father is no longer alive, this video touched my heart thinking that he was one of the thousands of black dots in the gallery shown in this video.

Mr. Galagali, I can not thank you enough for getting me to see this series - a series that we all followed quite closely as college students, through news papers and Sportstar and a now defunct magazine called Sports World (published from Calcutta and edited by Tiger Pataudi). The victory was memorable for us since India got beaten by Pak in the previous series and I never thought I would get to see these visuals. A few highlights I remember: 1. Kapil reached both 1000 runs and 100 wickets in this test, which is his 25th. He was the first India pacer to take 100 wickets and also the third fastest at that time to allrounder's double of 1000 runs + 100 wickets (after Botham and Vinoo Mankad). 2. Vengsarkar was unwell and did not play, and Roger Binny (who batted at No 8 in the previous test) was asked to go in at No 3, as the rest of the specialist middle order batsmen wanted to go at at the position. Binny would have blossomed into a very good player for India, if selectors treated him properly 3. Reserve Wicketkeeper Taslim Arif played as a specialist opener here, made 90 and 46 but played only 5 more times for Pak and finished his test career with a batting average of 62. and 4. Ghavri (from No 9) top scored for India for the second time in this series. He and Doshi held on for a little more 1 hour and added 30 for the last wicket.

I don't think it was Door Darshan, which did not start cricket telecast until 1981 England tour of India. It must be NFDC which used to create short news reels played before the main movie in theaters, but Mr. Galagali can clarify. But, you are right, it is amazing that he could get this video which we would never have got to see otherwise.

During late 70s, only Sunny Gavaskar use to play all types of bowling attacks and scored good runs, Visvanath played but very inconsistent. The rest of our batsmen failed miserably. Also we were very much lagging in pace bowling but for Kapil, we did not have attacking pace bowlers.

Amarnath's Herculean efforts in the latter series and the Port of Spain and Jamaica tests of 1976 are part of cricketing history. West Indies had the worse cricket coverage of all so don't have much hope, but just thought I'd put it out there if anyone has any recordings from those series.

Toss was fixed in this match. First instance of match fixing. Tehelka tape number 2 episode. Vishwanath flipped the coin and zahir abas said congrats you won the toss, reality India had lost the toss. Harsh but true.
