India’s Barefoot Picasso: M.F.Husain

Known for his bold, vibrantly coloured narrative paintings in a modified Cubist style, Maqbool Fida Husain aka M. F. Husain was one of the most celebrated Indian artists of the 20th century. With his artistic prowess, he used to effortlessly bring out a wide range of emotions, including caustic, funny, sombre, and serious on his canvas. Just like exploring different emotions with his brushstrokes, Husain’s themes also were a rich profusion of topics such as Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the British Raj, and motifs of Indian urban and rural life. He lost her mother at the age of a year and a half, and this he claims, could be the reason for the prominent faceless maternal Indian figures in his paintings.
