What are Government-run hotels like in India? I stayed at one to find out. It's $32 a night and next to a meteorite impact!
The hotel is MTDC Resort Lonar (महाराष्ट्र पर्यटन विकास महामंडळ रिसॉर्ट) goo.gl/maps/Ef43Fw2CDrUTLvou6 at Lonar Lake, Maharashtra, India.
Lonar Lake, located in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, India, is a fascinating natural marvel that captivates visitors with its unique characteristics. This saline soda lake, formed around 50,000 years ago due to a meteorite impact, is the world's third-largest crater lake.
Its enchanting emerald-green waters, nestled within the confines of a stunning impact crater, are surrounded by dense vegetation, lending an air of serenity to the area. The lake's saline nature has also created a microcosm of diverse flora and fauna, making it an ecological hotspot and attracting researchers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Kia ora from New Zealand! A few years ago we did a 3 month tour of India and decided on the spur of the moment to try a government hotel in Aurangabad. Despite good reviews and good first impressions (nice staff), the hotel was really bad. It was very dirty overall, needed lots of maintenance, had old furniture which was falling apart, and was not secure. We ended up leaving at 1.30am as the beds turned out to be riddled with bed bugs, and the night manager could not, or would not give us another room. We walked 2 doors down to another hotel which was slightly cheaper but the experience was 10 times better. That was the one and only time we used a government hotel in India. We loved India overall and are really looking forward to returning one day!

You guys are so nice. You might evaluate a hotel as decent guests. But there’s another side to it. What hotels must do. Their part. As long as there’s a dead bug in toilet, stains on the bed sheets, dust on the floor etc., it means they are not doing their part. It’s not related to how big the hotel is or how many stars they have. Rooms that are about to go must be checked. It must be ready to give to the guest. It MUST be clean. No wifi? That’s fine. If they say they have wifi but they actually don’t, they don’t do their part. If they say the room is ready but it looks like that, they don’t do their part. White sheets are popular in hotel businesses. The reason is you can bleach them, it’s easier to get rid of nasty stains. If the stain doesn’t go, you better get rid of those sheets. Colored ones are harder to deal with. Those sheets are white. There is simply no realistic excuse for the stains. These are not advanced approaches. Hotel Business A 101.

The meteorite impact that caused the Deccan Traps occurred about 66 million years ago in what is now the Indian state of Maharashtra. The impact site is located near the town of Chitradurga, about 300 kilometers (190 miles) north of Bangalore. The impact was so powerful that it created a crater about 100 kilometers (62 miles) wide and 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep. The impact also caused a massive amount of dust and debris to be thrown into the atmosphere, blocking out the sun and causing a global winter. This winter is believed to have been a major factor in the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other species about 66 million years ago. The Deccan Traps are a series of lava flows that were formed by the impact. The lava flows cover an area of about 500,000 square kilometers (193,000 square miles), making them one of the largest volcanic provinces on Earth. The impact and the Deccan Traps are two of the most important geological events in the history of the Earth. They had a profound impact on the evolution of life on Earth and continue to shape the landscape of India today.

Fascinating- thanks so much for the wonderful explanation. I was wondering where this was, but I am, coincidentally, also a bit of a geology lover. I’m in Oregon, USA, in the NW of the country, and we have similar flood basalts here; I’d heard about much larger ones in Russia and India, and I’m pleased to have found one of the two so organically. Those particular dogs were very sweet dogs visiting with you. The crater was also impressive. Even so, I don't think I would want to stay at that hotel because of the sheets issue. The rest did not matter. I suppose I could travel with my own sheets, and maybe mosquito netting. I once got West Nile virus from a mosquito bite when I was living in Arizona, so I am pretty diligent on that matter. I would love to visit India someday. The government-run (KTDC) Mascot Hotel at Thiruvananthapuram is excellent although the interiors need a bit of updating.👌🏻

I love how the room is very sparse, the sheets are dirty, there's evidence of bedbugs (that little red stain on the mattress), there's a bug in the toilet, no hot water, the food is extremely basic, and the guide doesn't come (at least, so far when I'm watching) and there are mosquitoes and Karl just keeps saying "Fine, it's fine." Does he really think that or is he just trying to not make a downbeat video? I'm not sure that his wife thinks it's "fine"!

Except for homes, I always try to stay in the govt run hotels as they are almost always quiet and in the best locations. Yes of course you need to set aside lack of maintenance, poor management and the like but benefits always outweigh the negatives unless you are super picky (in which case you probably dont roam around India. Also different states put differing attention on their TDC. Rajashtan is at the low end and I would put Madhya Pradesh and Kerala at the high end. But even in Rajasthan you have to use the Jhalawar location. You will not find a commercial location as good and as quiet at tha. And its loaded with champak trees for heavenly scent. MTDC is about average or a bit above average overall.

No it's not Normal to have stained sheets in India. Kindly ask them to provide clean sheets if you face this problem again. I travel 7-10 days every month in India. I would never settle for such dirty sheets.

This is the issue I have traveling outside Pune, I prefer to mostly take a flight in India and places with mid range hotels between 5-7k. Try going to Mahabaleshwar, Its not too bad.

Those sheets... I couldn't do it. If I'm a foreigner visiting India, I would say its worth a it to splurge for some clean sheets. A thousand rupees for a clean room is nothing compared to the cost to get there.

I love India 😃 I think the Hotel Mary in Kolkata, back in 1992, was Rs. 32/night 😅. Of course, the bed mattresses were stuffed with coconut husk, no hot water, no potable drinking water, a washroom with a shower, sink, toilet can't recall if they had a Western style toilet or a traditional "squatty" [much more practical], in an attempt to appeal to more "Westerners") all in one space with a cement floor that sloped to a floor drain (like most washrooms in India). Much easier to clean than Western/modern washrooms/bathrooms/toilets. Just hose down the entire space, spread Phenol all over, scrub, hose down 😃 (which is really handy if you get hit with giardia 😮😅). Anyway, unless you're staying at the Oberoi or some other elegant hotel you're get a few "extras" 😊🛌🚽🛁😌

I also thought it's a little expensive, you could stay in many towns in the UK for just a little more too. But not in an equivalent beauty spot unless you're very lucky! (with a private room, you could find a good hostel though)

The Indian hotel register... one of my pet hates when you arrive tired at a hotel. In a country that prides itself as a world IT hub one would think it could be automated so that you fill in key details online before arrival once and use it for all hotels. Fascinating video Karl... thanks

Hi Karl, Govt. Hotels are usually cheap for Govt. Officials , Also you stayed in a remote place and in places like that its hard to find hotels for stays due to limited tourism and resources. ONE Other thing govt. Hotels guarantee your security purposes. There too are good Govt. Hotels at touristic places

Everytime its general practice to call manager to room nd show him marks, dust , then he will change the bed sheet. Reason behind could be limited stock of bed sheet, or clean bed sheet. In rain reason drying bed sheet in hilly area tks two days so try to run with whatever they has, or Change it upfront of customer so that you can't complain that he has given old one or used one. This is practice in budgeted hotel all over india.

Many hotels in maharastra / esp the mtdc ones are really like this, the thing is mtdc gets the cream spot on location, but the upkeep is bad. They dont take pride in their upkeep. I would have compalined ans got the room or the bedding changed 100pc ! The delay in service 😒 that you have got to live with in india. 19-20

I couldn't sleep in that bed, the only way would be to have no place to stay and I would sleep with clothes on. Being a hotel, they would have to be more careful and disinfect the white sheets with a little chlorine, I don't think chlorine costs much! It's a nice hotel, it's a shame they don't care about it. a big hug india is a beautiful place
