India's main opposition Congress party has been served with a tax notice worth Rs 1,800 crores ahead of general elections next month. The tax authorities are accusing the party of "discrepancies" in returns filed over the five-year period from 2017 to 2021. The Congress has rejected the claims calling it "tax terrorism" by the ruling BJP. In addition to this notice, the Congress party faces other tax-related accusations, some of which date back to the 1990s. Earlier this month, tax authorities had recovered around Rs 135 crores from the Congress party's bank account, leaving it cash-strapped in the middle of campaign season. INC could have amended the IT Rules when the party was in power. But they used to rely upon the senior advocates in the party, namely, P. Chidambaram, Kabil Sibal and Abhishek Manusingvi etc to btowbeat the judges bureaucrats. But the situation is changed once Mr. Subramaniam Swamy got involved in Gandhi- Nehru family. The IT is anyhow doing its job and INC will usually approach judiciary to appeal against the notices to delay the matters, but eventually the party has to pay the tax as the common man will be watching their moves. Any wrong move by them will finish the party by A Hume ( an Englishman) once for all.
