Deep in the rural plains of southern India, a mysterious government construction project is under way. Some allege the site will be a top secret "nuclear city", designed to produce highly enriched uranium and allow the country to develop thermonuclear weapons - devices more than 1,000 times more powerful than those detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki towards the end of World War II.
In response, India's neighbour and decades-old foe Pakistan has vowed to keep pace and build its own equivalent programme, sparking fears that a new arms race is under way on the sub-continent - a race which could bring the region to the brink of thermonuclear war and threaten the lives and livelihoods of half of the world's population.
To find out what is really going on behind the walls of this secret site, People and Power sent Indian journalist Mandakini Gahlot to investigate.

What's so exciting about India building a security complex for its requirements and increasing its military arsenal , having neighbors like Pakistan and China around ? Grow up a bit and focus on the larger aspects of military aspirations, ethics of countries , the probability of proliferation to other countries , desire and greed quotient to grab ..... on all these factors , India will stand tall on the ethical and self constrained governance compared with any other countries.

Rather amusing is the fact here that this report, while rightly placing its focus on a Nuclear escalation in this region appears more eager about exposing the secrecy behind India's Nuclear programme.Besides talking to the experts in US,Pakistan and India, it strangely has access only to the exact location of India's facility and does not mention even the larger region of the Pakistan's similar facility leave alone showing the exact location. This however does in a way point to the,where and who exactly should be worried and about whom.

I though Al Jazeera is good news channel but now I see all distorted news about India. I don't understand the hate against India. India has never attacked/annexed any country in its entire history. We even gave back the lands that were captured during the war against Pakistan which is Bangladesh, India could have taken the land for its own purpose for expansion. Yes, true India needs to defend itself, look at our neighbors CHINA and PAKSITAN. Do we even need to say more.. ***** neither did pakistan. NPT recognise only five nuclear states (thoes are the permanent members of security council). Then how can India sign that treaty. There are other conditions which the recognised nuclear states failed to implement like decreasing nuclear arsenal. We are not concerned with other countries we only concern about China. In the past, China had attacked India in 1962 and we must have to protect ourselves. China has a bad track record of nuclear proliferation even he has signed the NPT. And we have "No- first use policy" and our proliferation record is also good. So what is the need of signing the NPT?

+Coco what is basic purpose of signing the NPT?? It is for non- proliferation of nuclear technology. Both China & Pakistan had proliferate this technology in the past. Since Pakistani is non signatory of this treaty so we can't blame this but China (being a signatory) should had acted responsibly.
