Over the past few decades, China has solidified its status as an economic superpower. But the country’s economic boom coupled with its increased military might has increased tensions in the region, including with Taiwan, where fears are mounting over a possible Chinese invasion.
Meanwhile, at home, China’s human rights record remains under the spotlight with severe curtailments on free speech and a continued hardline policy on the country’s Uighur community.
So what lies ahead?
Mehdi Hasan goes head-to-head with Victor Gao, the former translator for Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and vice president of the Center for China and Globalization, on President Xi Jinping's rule, China's foreign policy and its clampdown on dissent.
Joining the discussion are:
Rayhan Asat - international human rights lawyer of Uighur descent and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council
Stephen Chan - professor of world politics at the University of London, School of African and Oriental Studies
Martin Jacques - author of When China Rules the World and visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing

I get Victor's idea in theory. Criticize but offer your own solution that could improve things. But it simply doesn't work in practice in China because govt is so deeply insecure. Here's an example. "Zero covid was a disaster in China. The government should have followed the advice of the WHO and end its lockdowns which harmed more people than it helped." How would the government respond to this constructive criticism and 'positive' suggestion for improvement? (listen to the scientists of the world who were in full consensus that the lockdowns in China should end in 2022). You will get pilloried and blocked online for suggesting that the Chinese government harmed more people than it helped. And it's an insult to suggest that govt didn't follow worldwide scientific consensus which is true but makes them look bad. So in practice, you can never criticize.

A few people cannot divide a country, just like the people in your hometown cannot declare independence alone. Even if your whole village voted. If this were allowed, there would be not just 200 countries in the world today, but maybe 2,000. This will undoubtedly plunge the earth into the consequences of a long-term war.

By the way, a country's former ruling party, after losing the support of the majority of the people, fled to one of the provinces with a handful of supporters and attempted to split the country, which itself violated the country's constitution.

As a chinese, I also don't consider china is a democratic country, but if you ask me if I want to china became a democracy like india or even British, my answer is no. As a realist, I don't want to trade the safety society and stablize economy for free spech which you could criticize your leader in public or even election right. For me or other ordinary Chinese, we consider democracy isn't essential for a society, but law and order is.

That is because we are used to having order and law, we live in a society where it is safe to live in but not safe to criticize the government, but tbh, I don't really give a fk about criticizing the government, I just want it to improve and do better rather than collapse or destroyed then a new nobody takes over making the future unpredictable. I don't have to worry about going out late at night, my first instinct isnt to run whenever i hear explosion or sounds similiar to gun shots. Im saying this cuz i live in LA, its a great city but I have actually seen crimes right in front of me in downtown. I never would or want to see that anywhere in China.

A lifetime of one man rule is the answer?
@eefiasfira
@eefiasfira Ай бұрын
@@Andy-P I didn't say that. BTW, before Xi, China had a 10-yr ruler, albeit always from the Communist party. But, who are we to judge whether a lifetime of a one _smart_ man rule is better than 5-yr rules of people like May, BoJo, Truss? I mean, I've never lived in China so I don't know. I'm an Indian living in the US which is about to be run by two selfish authoritarian billionaires - both bent on destroying democracy. But I do know for a fact that the Chinese model of governing has elevated the largest number of poor people, _in human history_ , into the middle-class, in just 4 decades (1970-2010) _without colonizing_ another country. And I do know that today China is leading the world in EV technology & adoption. So maybe there's something there? And given the political far-right tilt around the globe (thanks largely to social media - a product of capitalism), who knows, an Indian "democracy" style, ultra-nationalist "cult" leader like Modi (who is in his 3rd term as PM, with little opposition because he has full control of the press, election commission, judiciary & investigative agencies, with which he's gotten prominent opposition leaders arrested on corruption charges) might be in our future.

Actually to be frank, we are the people living in China and there are so many way for us to express ourselves. If not, how can the country improve? It will just be a corrupted state. Don't be so naive and just cover everything in just one over-generalized statement, there are not much details within and don't try to be affected by some simplified views. I agree that within China we are not as free as some western states, but imagine what would happen if we are holding "Communism" is great and start a propaganda in the west, I guess some people will also try to put out that fire in some ways since they support so-called their democracy and don't want to be challenged.

The U.S. isn't bothered by the lack of democracy in China ،they don't care about the Chinese people at all. The only thing that bothers the U.S. is the econoic and the military growth of China. That is true, but extending the leadership tenure also increases the risk of harming the nation when the leader is later found inept or leading the nation to where the voters do not want.
