Very interesting podcast.. Shiv, your references to old communications vis a vis exports (or lack of it) and policy inertia was gold. Have been following defence since 2 decades and didnt know about this. I appreciate that you have the years behind you in defence journalism to document, file and present this perspective... and also despite being a mainstream anchor now, you havent let go of your defence reporting. Cheers

@ When something has been purposely delayed by a past government, it might have taken some hard selling to the customer , to make them agree to buy. That may have been the reason. If you recall, Philippines had Rody Duterte in government, who was extremely pro-China. And Indonesia also has been a bit back and forth.

Great topic & discussion. As a follow up to this, you both should discuss the geopolitical implications and challenges if & when India becomes a net exporter of defense equipment. What are the impediments our "friends" & enemies are going to throw at us for becoming a net exporter & also a geopolitical power of some influence? The west is still being business friendly with us even though they would rather have us be subjugated to their whims and fancy! At what point are the, "India is not a true democracy", "Democratic backsliding", "non-friendly state actor" rhetoric turn up a notch further? Technology export & trade restrictions imposed on India? How do we future proof ourselves before that moment arrives?
@datoolz03 күн бұрын
Tech export doesn't matter when Bharat is the world's biggest economy. Trade restrictions won't work when Bharat will start making its own jumbo jets and ships and trains. So luckily the government has already done enough, in 10-15 years Bharat will be immuine.

The sale of Brahmos to Philippines still makes Brahmos a strategic weapon for export sale even after 10 years of delay. We have been lucky as there is no comptetion in this even after very long delays. DRDO has been little lagging even in their finest missile tech as they do no have other cheaper non nuclear long range missile.

Other countries are exporting military hardwares which are second and third tyres in terms of technology the exporting countries possess... But in India's case, India is exporting 1st line technology India possesses... *Security concern should be given priority*, though export-variant is for export...

If Galwan issue was the factor which persuaded the govt to export missiles, I am worried that we are ruled by extremely incapable lot. It means these govts still trusted China or/and were too timid or don't have a vision. China has been exporting weapons to Pakistan (to be used against India) for such a long time.
