The Indian beach of Alang near Bhavnagar in Western Guajarat
State is one of the largest ship breaking yards in the world. At
any one time more than a hundred vessels from small cruisers to
massive oil tankers can be seen scattered in pieces across a
five kilometre stretch of the shore. Working a gruelling seventy
hours a week in soaring temperatures crews of Indian workers
have turned the place into a vast and eerie ship's cemetery.

Shipping companies are required to decommission their ships themselves but they found a loophole by selling it to someone else and those people will be the ones to bring the ships to be dismantled.

Theses people work so hard for so little. There has to be a better way. To adding to their poor conditions give a thought to how hot and humid it must be and they work 7 days a week. No sick pay, no holidays, no safety gear. It just looks like utter despair except for the guys making all the money. They are easy to spot, usually fat, nice clothes, no sweat and nowhere near the hot, dirty work. So sad.

Those that in the West are defined as "inhuman working conditions" With life-threatening dangers for workers, exposed to toxic elements for years present in the structure. And I don't know the daily pay, but can I think of it in, say, 1 or 2 dollars a day? There can be no comparison with European shipbuilding demolition sites. The United States Navy sends it's ships to Brownsville Texas and other U.S. ports for dismantling. It does not send them to India.

This really pisses me off. These poor men working for 2 dollars a day while the ship breaking corporation bosses earn millions. This is wrong, exploiting the poor with way below minimum wage, not providing safety equipment, treating them like slaves WTF! India wants to call itself a powerful emerging nation and this is how it treats its poor citizens. Shame on you, these workers are willing to do the hard work to put food on the table for their families. The least these corporations can do is give them a decent wage to survive and provide for their families. The Indian government should have stepped in a long time ago and stopped these businesses from exploiting it's workers. They need to put rules and regulations in place. Set a decent minimum wage (not fucking $2/day crap) and mandatory safety equipment provided by the company for their workers because without these men there would be no ship breaking taking place.

If this were done properly, AT the level of their countries. IE, if their gov invested the modicum of money to create flooding docks to bring the ships in, and create structures, then to take the ships apart, and have it done in a cleaner method, it would be acceptable. Certainly better than wasting that material. I'm not saying they could possibly ramp it up to full clean, but the fact that there's no interesting in making things a little bit better is just stupid. And these things could be implemented one bullet point at a time, doesn't need to be an overnight job. One dock today, better tools tomorrow. Showers the next. A mobile sludge pump. Et cetera.

If they get sick they wind up on the street. Still better that working in the ship breaking yards but we should be able to do better. Vote like your life depends on it because it does.
