This is amazing, everybody knows the shipbreaking yard in Alang, India but there is also one in Gaddani or Gadani beach in Pakistan. The Gadani ship-breaking yard is a centre for the breaking up of derelict ocean-going vessels for scrap. The yard is located in Gadani, Pakistan, about 50 kilometres northwest of Karachi.
This is a compilation from the documentary "Workingman's Death", see www.workingmans...
In the 1980s,the Gadani yard was described as the largest ship-breaking yard in the world, with more than 30,000 direct employees. However, competition from newer facilities in India and Bangladesh resulted in a significant reduction in output, with the Gadani yard producing less than one fifth of the scrap it produced twenty years ago. A reduction in taxes on scrap metal led to a modest resurgence at the Yard, which now employs around 6,000 workers.
In this clip we see in about 7 minutes how a ship is placed on the beach and breaking apart.

In a way sad, by our way of reckoning sad, but in Pakistan, there would be a multitude of equally hazardous jobs, say, in the construction and railway industries, or simply surviving in the cities. Each "new" ship beached causes happiness amongst the workers because it means another three months or so of employment and food for families. These are very brave men.

If they were payed fairly and would choose to work there instead of getting forced to do those dangerous jobs by poverty I would agree too. But the people are getting treated like trash and when someone dies, nobody cares. Heard a story of a friend who worked in Gaddani shipbreaking yard in Pakistan of a worker who fell down a ships cargo hatch and wasnt retrieved until the part of the ship he died in was getting cut up. Its a dirty business and everybody is only for himself…

@@orsoncart9441 No. Your attribution of those extraordinary paychecks to religion is ludicrous. It is all about the capitalist buck to be made. What you refer to as "making a god" is just a little old fashioned capitalist marketing hype. Nothing is more political than money. Edit: If you want a reality check here, go back and read your original comment. "make gods of people who play sport". Your thinking has been so warped that you do not know the meaning of "sport" nor "play". OK, I will educate you. Sport is something done for the fun. Play is for fun. As soon as a dollar changes hands, it is no longer a sport, it is a job, a livelihood and not engaged in for the fun of it.

Very dangerous work, in countries where life is cheap for employers. Besides falling or being crushed to death, the toxic chemicals held in the tanks, the fuel spilled onto the sea, the asbestos in the dust. People die young, just they can say they could afford to live.

Seeing all the cutting going on, you have to admire/fear for those people who run into the shallow water to help when a ship first is beached, knowing there are likely hundreds if not thousands of pieces of sharp, rusted metal from previous breakings that could injure them severely at any time. This would be much better done in a drydock environment, obviously.
