Unbelievable. There is not one sportsperson on the panel. Not one coach. What do these guys know about sports in India. I am sorry, but how many world class stadiums do we have, how many football fields. It’s very easy to sit here in your AC rooms and say all these when neither do you know about sports and sports infrastructure nor do you dare to research and put out proper analysis. This is like a high school debate, everyone shouting over one another. No concrete facts and data trends presented. This is the state of our mainstream media. Shameful

The most useless bunch of people they found in their studio who never played a single sport in their entire life to do a group discussion on "Why India still doesn't do well in Olympics and How to raise the standards in Sports ". Initially Vikrant and Preeti made their individual points without interruption but after that it turned into a fish market debate where everyone was cutting off the other person making it's point. The only person who made really good points was the lady in green on the extreme left sitting next to Vikrant but she was constantly getting interrupted/ heckled. That lady in pink on extreme right was soo freaking annoying as she was cutting off everyone and made the most idiotic/ silly arguments.

As a Chinese, I’d like to share what our country does: 1. Govt support - Infrastructure; Training; Coach; Fund 2. Parents like to send kids do various sports, arts and activities after school or on weekends since Kindergarten or Primary school; 3. Education system: Talented sports kids can enter better secondary, high school and university; 4. Domestic Sports games (levels: District-City-Province-National). Talents stand out will be selected to a higher level into talent pool. 5. Budget is mainly from Sports lottery revenue. China re-invest it into athletes. 6. Beaucracy: Each province’s govt officers in sport department, their promotion or rewards is also related to athlete performance. And competitions between provinces is also fierce. So it motivates each local govt to seek for talents and support athletes.

How many Indian's can do that?? We don't have the balls or will, to build world class athletes. Stop blaming "athletes" as if they are a separate caste from all of you. @@steamuser1277 Great point! Jamaican and East Africans prove that you don't need top facilities. Jamaicans and Kenyans/Ethiopians train on grass and soft dirt, which actually helps with form and prevent injury. The reason they do well is because it's part of their national psyche to do well in Track and Field, from elementary school onward. They have a robust development system not dependent on expensive facilities. They have great coaches though. Jamaica and East Africa prove that development and coaching can produce medals with little funding.

@@Jdr-fk9oq In China, getting into sports is kind of like the last choice. Most athletes, like 99% of them, don’t strike it rich. Usually, kids go for sports classes if they’re not doing great in school, or maybe they pick an art class. These schools cut down on regular classes and zoom in on training sports talent, usually starting in middle school. Then there are the super rich families who don’t have to worry about money. For them, sports are just another form of fun. Really talented kids might get into stuff like racing, skateboarding, horseback riding, golf, you name it. China's economy was not very good in 1980s but won medals because of the gov. India is a democracy and that is the way it should be not to force things like Diving, Gymnastics or Shooting where they do not gave guns in China or have access to equipment to train but inspite of that the manufacturing economy helped them the goverment funding where India's Bollywood, IT and Pharma/Textiles was not big enough The Indian process is slow, and the 200 medals in Aquatics and Cycling cannot be force on the population for just medal count like China does for corporate TV sponsors as long it is has a democratic ideology The swimming in Australia was encouraged because of drowning cases when swimming in the Ocean. Indian's did not swim as much in the Ocean and following a sport to just win medals may not be practical. The general masses helped the IPL leagues. It may take time for the sports culture which is not the highest priority

It's surprising to see a female gymnast from India competing in the Paris Olympics. Considering that the first female gymnast participated in the 2016 Olympics, it certainly wasn't 'being stuck in the Bronze Age'. However, one cannot say the same for some politicians, naysayers and 'Crabs'. It's more encouraging and motivating to applaud, celebrate and be supportive as the PM has shown. Rather than discuss the poor participation, it would be more positive to encourage your sportswomen and sportsman to tell their amazing and painful stories.

The issue in info from its conception to now has always been that we are a nation of crooks. This does not mean that the average Indian is a crook but that our representatives are crooks. Whether it’s a leader of a political party, or any other social of sport association, all without a doubt are crooks. Otherwise, how could they have climbed the social ladder in the Indian system. Only crooks are rewarded while the honest person is punished for his honesty.

The problem with our nation, and this is one of the major reasons even though it has nothing got to do with the system and the athletes, the reason is that how many people out of a country of 1.4 billion people know about olympics and watch it?? Probably 5-10%. All we think about is the cricket worldcup and at times football leagues. Recently I asked my colleague, "Are you watching the olympics?" and his reply was " No. Not interested". Great watching India media and debate 1. Does India only know their actual status and performance when they did terribly in the recent Paris Olympic. Not in past Olympic, International Youth Games, University Games, Military Games, Commonwealth Games or Asia Games? 2. India ranked miserably in Global Hunger Index too and dropping yearly. Is wining medals now r more important than anything? 3.Thought India thinks they r the best in Asia, and China is just a boogeyman to divert real domestic attentions until reality gave a slap on the face. And it's just in a sport event! 😂 4. Well, India indulges in self praising and Anglo Saxxon media especially of their full potential. Or is it? 5.Largest and freest democracy as people say.....unfortunately US's self claimed most serious and peer competitor today ain't India or anywhere close!

just to add to this since I have already commented. Haryana was not the first state to announce cash rewards as incentives for sports. The first state to really push the envelope so as to say on this was Andhra Pradesh under the leadership of Chandrababu Naidu. During one national games he announced that whichever player changed their affiliation to Andhra and brough medals they will be rewarded 10 lakhs for gold, 5 for silver and 2 for bronze. That was the first time medal winning in amateur sports was incentivized. Haryana did not take the lead. Prior to that no guaranteed cash reward was announced beforehand for winning medals but winners in international events were given generous rewards by the govt. And FYI the prize for an Olympic gold was never 1 lakh in my active memory. Medals in Olympics were always coveted and even medals in Asiad and Commonwealth games were rewarded. In fact Leander Paes who ended the Olympic medal drought after 12 or 16 years by winning bronze in tennis was awarded 30 lakhs by Indian govt. Thirty lakhs in 1992 or 1996 was a big amount. He won a medal after 12 or 16 years because last medal for India was gold in hockey in 1980 Moscow Olympics though that is not counted as great achievement as all western nations or those with the capitalist block had boycotted the games. So the big guns Australia Great Britain Spain and Holland did not participate. Even Leander won for tennis which exactly is not hyper competitive because tennis is a professional sports and hence all the top players either do not participate or just play when they are forced by their country to make up the numbers. Yet Leander was given 30 lakhs by the Indian govt. And even medals in Asiad and Commonwealth games were always rewarded by the Indian govt. Not to mention Group B level jobs are confirmed for every sportsperson who is of national distinction. Indian Railways, Air India, Oil PSUs, BSF, SBI and Indian Army and other govt. departments have specific quota for sportsperson who have participate and win medals at national games. Also it is not just Haryana which is producing Olympic medals. PV Sindhu is from Andhra, Karman Malleswari is from Tamil Nadu, Mary Kom Manipur, Leander Paes West Bengal, Mahesh Bhupathi Karnataka, PT Usha who came fourth even after breaking national record Kerala.
