When China was as poor as India in term of comparative GDP per capita in the 1980's, the dominant social sentiment in China was self-reflection, and it drove China to improve itself for decades. Actually nowaday Chinese people still incline to be introspective for China not being the world number one in any field, and this kind of mindset drives China to soar to an even higher level. On the contrary, Indians are already "proud to be Indians" and "Jai Hind" everywhere for everything now. All I see from Chinese' tendency of self-reflection is confidence. Also they heavily fielded black athletes to compete who are naturally gifted athletes compared to us also add on that our only focus is to learn English fluently and secure a career in any field. Our parents are not interested in sports. In the US it's compulsory to attend sports meets in inter school levels. But we don't have that kind of financial equality to organise these kinds of events. The paragraph will get long if I add more points to it. So cutting short sports meets in inter school or inter college levels are crucial for one's development as an athlete. If you don't participate you will fail the freshman year or whichever year you are in.

I remember when I was a kid living in India, my school (girls’ school ) did not take any sports seriously. It was all about time pass. When I came here in the States in the 9th grade, that’s when I got a real introduction to various sports and developed an interest in understanding and playing games. The gym class was as important as any other classes that took in my high school. The attitude toward gym classes in small towns especially for girls should be changed in India.

As Palki always boasted that India has the 5th largest GDP, it does not reflect proportionately to it's sports prowess. However, Palki is doing great by calling out the govt to do more. Palki should learn from China and hit those points repeatedly so that the govt could wake up. I would love to see India getting more golds in coming Olympics for Asia's pride.

it is gdp per capita that is correct indicator. of course nation of 1.5 billion will have large economy as all these people consume food, buy clothes, toothpaste, soap etc. So indian economy must be in trillion dollars, but doesn't mean we are rich

Canadian guy here... I have to say this was the 2nd or 3rd Olympics in a row where I started to ask ''Why isn't India doing better at the Olympics? They are the world's largest population, and they're experiencing a huge advance in technology and modernization over the past 10yrs, so why are they doing so poorly at sports?" I've come to realize India may have a large and slowly progressing population, but in so many ways the country still struggles with 3rd world issues (sanitation, clean drinking water, disease, caste system divisions...etc). Most of these important issues need to be resolved before India can turn their attention to ''bigger 1st-world issues'' (like the Olympics). Once India provides the basics of safety, health, food & shelter for all its citizens, I'm sure it won't be long after until we see several Indian athletes starting to compete well at the Olympics.

Uzbekistan which is a country of Babur got 8 gold medals 2 silver 3 bronze and 13 position on medal table. We sent just 90 athletes. Despite being a low income country, we are thriving in sports. Indians dont get sad about the result, you will be back stronger!

Well, I think it's cultural. The West has chivalry, and East Asia also has it. In China, it's called face culture, you can't lose face in front of the public. It's more painful for a man to lose face than to be killed. This is also true at the national level. China's population is so large that if it doesn't win many gold medals, then China will lose face. So China will care more about sports. I don't see such culture in India. An interesting thing is that after Gandhi's Satyagraha Movement spread to China. Lu Xun, the greatest thinker in modern China, believed that if the Chinese begged the colonizers like Gandhi did, the Chinese would perish. The Chinese should fight back against the enemy tenfold. Gandhi and Lu Xun are, in a sense, portraits of Chinese and Indians

Because as I've said many times, the Olympics is essentially a Western led and rule-based system, so it is inherently unfair. (Many examples: such as many sports that Asians excel in had their rules modified ,or even cancelled from the Olympics; and blatant double standards against Western and Eastern athletes... etc.) So, comparing on an inherently unfair platform, of course, there's no fair result to speak of. If China really values the Olympics so much, it will do the same as East Germany did before. At that time, East Germany, with a population of only 10 million, surpassed the United States several times in Olympic medals!! Because they implemented a complete national system at that time. ~~ In fact, China has even retained its strength in many fields that the world has not seen. Comparing medals to population, NZ won 10 gold medals with 3 million Kiwis and USA won 40 gold medals with 300 million Americans. If NZ and USA both had 30 million people, the Kiwis would have won 100 gold medals and the USA only 4. China would have had even less. Regarding sports, the take home message is do not compare your country to Aotearoa - New Zealand. It is an outlier. Lots of countries could take lessons from NZ as far as sports goes. Just look how well they do at Rugby and Cricket.
