After witnessing India's 🇮🇳 horrific performance on the world's largest sporting event (2024 Olympics), it's clear that India's economy is not as wonderful as it is claimed to be (a- façade). Despite boasting that we are the 5th largest economy and will be the 3rd largest by the end of the decade, India ranks 71 out of 84 in the 2024 Olympics medal table. This ranking is a clear indicator that India is lacking in so many important areas (Not just in sports, but the entire country in general): insufficient funding, inadequate financial resources, underdeveloped human growth, inadequate training facilities, insufficient support from psychologists, nutritionists and medical staff. Political instability in India diverts it's attention and resources away from human development, while economic challenges, health crises, food, water shortages, and infrastructure issues exacerbate the situation. The country also struggles with a lack of youth development programs, limited access to advanced training and recovery technology, low motivation or incentives for improvement, poor mental health state, and significant environmental factors such as pollution, which impact the health of its people. Result speaks for themselves. With India facing these challenges, India's economy is not ranked 5th but rather closer to 71.

When China was as poor as India in term of comparative GDP per capita in the 1980's, the dominant social sentiment in China was self-reflection, and it drove China to improve itself for decades. Actually nowaday Chinese people still incline to be introspective for China not being the world number one in any field, and this kind of mindset drives China to soar to an even higher level. On the contrary, Indians are already "proud to be Indians" and "Jai Hind" everywhere for everything now. All I see from Chinese' tendency of self-reflection is confidence. Also they heavily fielded black athletes to compete who are naturally gifted athletes compared to us also add on that our only focus is to learn English fluently and secure a career in any field. Our parents are not interested in sports. In the US it's compulsory to attend sports meets in inter school levels. But we don't have that kind of financial equality to organise these kinds of events. The paragraph will get long if I add more points to it. So cutting short sports meets in inter school or inter college levels are crucial for one's development as an athlete. If you don't participate you will fail the freshman year or whichever year you are in.

I remember when I was a kid living in India, my school (girls’ school ) did not take any sports seriously. It was all about time pass. When I came here in the States in the 9th grade, that’s when I got a real introduction to various sports and developed an interest in understanding and playing games. The gym class was as important as any other classes that took in my high school. The attitude toward gym classes in small towns especially for girls should be changed in India.

Canadian guy here... I have to say this was the 2nd or 3rd Olympics in a row where I started to ask ''Why isn't India doing better at the Olympics? They are the world's largest population, and they're experiencing a huge advance in technology and modernization over the past 10yrs, so why are they doing so poorly at sports?" I've come to realize India may have a large and slowly progressing population, but in so many ways the country still struggles with 3rd world issues (sanitation, clean drinking water, disease, caste system divisions...etc). Most of these important issues need to be resolved before India can turn their attention to ''bigger 1st-world issues'' (like the Olympics). Once India provides the basics of safety, health, food & shelter for all its citizens, I'm sure it won't be long after until we see several Indian athletes starting to compete well at the Olympics.

That’s why countries or people of poorer economic standing tend to excel in sports like soccer, basketball and even cricket yet do poorly in sports like swimming, tennis or golf. These later sports are sports that tend to be more freely available to those with money. I’m not saying India can’t win a gold medal but they face an uphill battle when there’s no funding to find and nurture emerging talent. Just take a look at China. Ever since their economic growth they have improved their medal tally to the point they equalled the number of gold with the US in the latest Olympics. I won’t be surprised if the end up beating the US in the very near future.

There's so much corruption in india at both public and private institutions. My semi public school sent a sports team to another state for inter State athletics. One male and female school sports teacher went with the team as guardians. The facilities onsite were so poor that they didn't even have hot water to bathe, the bathroom did not have a door, you had to carry a bucket of cold water and bathe while your friend kept a watch on the door. The guardian sports teachers didn't do anything at all. They just joked that take showet when you go back home. Many students chose not to bath for the three day event. The food was puri and aloo ki sabzi. So unhealthy and very bad quality. Students who could afford to eat out bought outside food. The students were supposed to get a rs. 100 daily stipend, but the sports teachers gave each student only rs 50 and pocketed the rest of the money themselves.🤯
