In India, Buddhism kind of dissolved with Hinduism. In fact, Hinduism was never a religion in itself, it's a British construct from a persian word for india that is hindu. People in India followed different dharmic traditions and Buddha, Mahavira, adi shankaracharya were reformers with their own set of beliefs and practices ( which can be termed as dharma). Buddhism/Jainism are more disciplined and strict in their belief system which might have made it difficult for the common people to follow it as per the book. However, unlike abrahmic religions, these were quite pacifist and not fundamentalistic in nature. Buddhism flourished quite well till the era of harshvardhan but after that, along with disintegration of india, adi shankaracharya played a great role in converting back most of india towards the sanatan dharma. He toured all over India for this and the regions of subcontinent that he could not cover were the generally the fringes like current day Bangladesh, Western parts of Pakistan, afghanistan, northern nepal, bhutan, srilanka which in turn remained buddhist. When islam arrived a few centuries later, it were these areas that quickly got converted except for nepal, bhutan and srilanka where it never reached as a ruling power. Hindus too were converted but mostly in the western regions that now belongs to pakistan and kashmir valley. But even when buddhism almost vanished, many of its principles were absorbed by Hinduism or the sanatan dharma. It made hinduism more pacifist and Buddha became a hindu god. Buddhism sort of re- emerged in india in the colonial period when Bhim Rao Ambedkar urged Dalits in india to leave the caste oppression in hinduism which was quite rife back then and that is the reason we have that 0.7% buddhist population. Traditional buddhist are less than 0.1% , the remaining being ambedkarite buddhists. Infact, Bangladesh has a higher percentage of traditional buddhists remaining as sankarcharya couldn't reach there in the 8th century.

I agree with most of what you say. The only thing I would draw attention to is that Sanatan Dharma should not be confused with Hinduism. Or any religion for that matter. Indian Nationalists like to conflate Sanatan Dharm with India, particularly with Hinduism. If Sanatan Dharm can be reduced to mere racial, cultural and political affiliations then it is not the true Sanatan Dharm. It would simply be a man made construct. Not eternal nor imperishable. Not the most high. What the ancient rishis were pointing to is in fact something that cannot be possessed. It is eternal, limitless and timeless suchness. The word Sanatan Dharm are in the vedic culture, but what use are words? They point to something much more important and worthwhile than mere words can ever hope to convey. But to an Indian Nationalist, the words themselves are of course extremely important, because they are racially, politically and culturally loaded, and serve the interests of the majority/those in power. With their Sanskrit 'Sanatan Dharm' the Indian Nationalist/Hindu can make a case for being a true Bharatiya, and having religious, political and cultural superiority over non-Hindus. The Indian Nationalist can feel like part of a so called 'Aryan Race' an attitude that influenced Adolf Hitler greatly in the 20th Century in his persecution and mass murder of Jewish minorities. When we talk about Sanatan Dharma, therefore, are we talking about the true Sanatan Dharm, or just pushing a cultural and nationalist agenda?. I think that this is a very important distinction, with far reaching implications, spiritually and socially.

From 986 CE, the Muslim Turks started raiding northwest India from Afghanistan, plundering western India early in the eleventh century. Forced conversions to Islam were made, and Buddhist images smashed, due to the Islamic dislike of idolatry. Indeed in India, the Islamic term for an 'idol' became 'budd'. Peter Harvey (2013). It's good you say that, but my impression is that hindus tolerate buddhism. Even though Buddhist teachings on meditation and mindfulness are among the most succinct and Practical, most hindus seem to dismiss the teachings. Nationalists are often proud that gautama was indian, and they dismiss gautama as an incarnation of vishnu, but as for the actual resoect and appreciation of buddhas teachings, now this is a very rare thing. It's a kind of lip service. In practice, hindus look to pajanjali and shankacharya for instruction. Even though their teachings derived from gautama and nagarjuna respectively.. There is a political divide where buddhism and Hinduism is concerned and always has been. A modern Indian will be weary of labels like Hinduism and Buddhism and will incorporate the fruits of both. Buddhism was never pan-Indian. It existed primarily in certain regions, mostly around urban centers in the Indian subcontinent. Rural India was mostly Hindu. Also, Hinduism also went through a major reform, revival & renaissance between 5-10th century AD. And everybody knows about the great debates! Also, the religion of the masses was mainly Hinduism. Buddhism always needed patronage from kings to survive.(eg. Palas, Harsha, Ashoka). Buddhism lost in popularity to Hinduism at that time. Buddhism was still surviving due to the inherent tolerant nature of Indic culture. But the final blow to Buddhism was Islamic Conquest. We all know, Nalanda & other Buddhist centres were completely destroyed by the invaders. Hinduism survived the barbaric Islamic onslaught; Buddhism didn't. Also, we can say Buddhism survives in some parts of India today in the form of Vegetarianism & Ahimsa. Great Video by the way!

However, at present, most of the Buddhist population in India are foreigners from neighboring countries like Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand & so on but the majority of the Buddhist Population In India are Tibetan Refugees. However, you'll also notice that most of the foreign Buddhist population are concentrated at the pilgrimage cities like Bogh Gaya, Kushinagar or Rajgiri. Per se, there aren't any Indian Buddhist Population and the topic is, "Why did Buddhism mostly disappear from India?" Buddhism disappeared in India after Muslim Invasion. Jainism existed before, during & after Buddha; before, during & after Adi-shankracharya; before, during & after Mughal & British rule. Do you see the difference?

A terribly confused theory that arises from artificially drawing a line between Buddhism and Hinduism. If we see the different schools of philosophy -- including the several astika and nastika philosophies in India, the distribution of all of them is more or less similar. There is no one dominating philosophy in the dharmic umbrella. Buddhism was no different. It enjoyed just as much or as little patronage as just about every other philosophical school of thought in India. The only difference with Buddhism is that it spread *outside* of India much more than other philosophies -- where state patronage, organised religions, slave labour, largesse, impact, etc. mattered a lot. These factors never played central roles in Indian thought. "Religion" was never a belief system propagated by the state, like in Europe.

Just to resolve the rivalry between Buddhism and Hinduism, Hindus cleverly included Buddha as one of the incarnation of Vishnu, thereby accepting all his teachings. To this day all Hindus accept Buddha as the 10 incarnation of Vishnu(avatar), and also celebrate Buddha Purnima as one of the auspicious days. This effectively brought and end to the rivalry, and people started mingling, thereby merging Buddhism and Hinduism.

@@magdaw3123 Volunteering. You should know that it was the Buddha who first time opposed the racism or caste-system and slavery. Buddha was a teacher, NOT a dictator. Thus he could only teach. He taught in Pali language, "Saccassa Aagamo natthi, Manussana Jaati na ce" can be translated as "No book can be the proof of the ultimate truth and there is no race of human-beings". Buddha said that he taught only the cause of suffering and freedom from suffering. Slavery is also a kind of suffering. So how could he teach slavery? Buddha made rules for the monks and nuns NOT to accept any kind of slaves from any laities; and not to work as slave for others. For the laities, he taught 'Samyak Ajibika', one of the Noble Eightfold Path, that means Right Livelihood. Right Livelihood prohibits Business of Weapons, Human Trafficking for Slavery and Prostitution, Business of Meat, Business of drugs, and Business in Poison.

I love everyone specially who's a follower of India's Dharmic root (Kshatriyas, Buddhists, Sikhs, Shudras, Jains, Vaishs). Stop creating a divide between us. Sanatan Dharm isn't a rigid religion, it accepts reformations. Buddha reformed Sanatan Dharm, Buddhist way of following Buddha and Hindu way of following Buddha.. both are correct. We're not supposed to fight and hate each other. We all are Dharmic people and shouldn't divide ourselves into Buddhists, Sikhs, Kshatriyas, Shudras, Jains, Brahmins, Vaishs and other sub divisions.

AntiVirus ! I too was like you - not believing in Caste system. There is a saying - being in water, you can't choose to fight with crocodiles. In India Caste is endemic. It is the only thing that endures. People may not know a person, but when they come to know of him, the first thing they learn is about his 'Caste'. He might die but his Caste lives on after him. You may bury or burn him but not his caste. None knows much about BR Ambedkar (the name 'Ambedkar' is a Brahmin surname even, that was given to him) or his views or ideals or the contributions he made to Hindu society as the most erudite 'Indian' of his generation (he didn't study for Barrister after finishing School like the others, but did it after graduation) but everyone knows his caste. He is considered never as a national leader first, but as the leader of Untouchables. Isn't it strange that an outstanding personage among the Untouchables is never considered (platitudes apart) a National leader? His works are read by many, like the Kshatriya, VP Singh (secretly) to understand Indian society & in order to succeed in Politics (by foisting false cases even on his rival & benefactor, Rajiv). Yet, above all he is known first for his caste - Untouchable. None asks the caste of a Bose, Nehru (there is a theory that his grandparents were Muslim who were forced to hide their caste), or sardar Patel. Most people refuse to accept that Caste is the one, that makes the Society hollowed out from inside. Its the rot under the smooth skin of a ripe apple. Even Gandhi refused to accept it. We witness a revival of this mindset that militates against the French revolution ideal: equality, fraternity, brotherhood.India will not progress truly, unless Castes are annihilated. It is the only Indian feature that distinguishes it from all other 192 (sovereign) countries in the world.

Nalanda university was totally burned. Shankaracharya never got chance to debate monks of nalanda. My two cents. Buddhism in India was never really a "mass religion." It was a Shramana (monastic) movement. Shramanas tend to be fluid, with groups waxing and waning depending on the quality of Gurus. Buddhism was unusually strong and long lived. But it died out once the main centers were razed to the ground by invaders.

@@tendar6666 I agree that we should not try to prove something superior to other. But try to understand. When a Muslim says "Jesus is a prophet but not god" is correct according to Islam because knowledge only comes through a prophet and they can respect Jesus only as a prophet not as god , but according to Christianity "truth" is something else and they reject "their" idea of prophethood which was one of many causes of holy wars. This situation never happened between different dharmas which originated in India because people accepted or included various types of sages and saints (not only buddha) in their own way of knowledge tree or system, which is fantastic according to me.

Wangsa Sailendra or Syailendra (Śailendramśa) is the name of the dynasty or dynasty of kings who ruled in Mdaŋ (Medang Kingdom or Ancient Mataram Kingdom), in Central Java since 752 and ruled Sriwijaya, on the island of Sumatra since the leadership of Balaputradewa Putra from Central Java. Most of its kings were adherents and protectors of Mahayana Buddhism. However, according to the Sojomerto inscription, Dapunta Sailendra, who became the ancestor of the Sailendra dynasty, was a Hindu of the Siwa sect. From Central Java, and the Sailendra dynasty is thought to have originated from the Kalingga Kingdom in the 5th century in Central Java and has many relics of temples located on the Kedu plains, Central Java. Besides originating from Central Java, other areas such as Sumatra or even India and Cambodia, was once proposed as the origin of this dynasty, but there are no sideboards or inscriptions to support it. in India it is written on the Nalanda inscription in the 9th century "We were asked by the illustrious Maharaja Balaputradewa, king Suwarnadwipa through a courier arranged by me to build a monastery at Nalanda which this decree granted to dedicate to the blessed Buddha, the abode of all the great virtues such as the Prajnaparamita, for worship, offerings, knowledge , shelter, alms, bed, the needs of the sick like medicine;....." the Nalanda inscription There is a kind-hearted king who comes from Suwarnadwipa (Sumatra) named Balaputradewa from the Syailendra dynasty who is a Buddhist descendant of Wiravairimathana

Hinduism and Buddhism (and Jainism) are so similar and all based on Sanatan Dharma there is no reason for us to fight and argue. We share culture, philosophy, history, and more. The Dharmic religions and all of their sects must stand united together or risk being destroyed by the foreign invading Abrahamic religions and their proselytizing
@rajeebbarma7 жыл бұрын
The reason is because the Buddhists couldn't win the arguments made by Adi shankaracharya who is considered an incarnation of lord Shiva. He, in his small lifetime of 30-something went to all the monasteries and defeated the monks just with the shear power of science and truth, to which the Buddhists couldn't completely give convincing answers. This is because Buddhism is just a small part of the whole truth which was introduced to bring awareness to people (1 out of 112 aspects of the reality) to stop the attrocities brought up by brahmins by Monopoly of knowledge. When the right time came, the right incarnation made a stop to budddhism. Now it's again on a rise because of the rise in organized religions. But we don't have to take that path again. We can learn from the history and not bother the Gods for more incarnations.

Debates never defines truth it is dependent upon the view of the people and also the number of people hold on to that view.. like most of the God Beliving religions ,,They are the most out of the religions in the world when it comes to numbers.. like Christianity, Islam, Jhudism , Hindunism. ..But Science has created the Athiest movement recently against those religions. Human civilization still at its baby age. With in another few thousand years those religions destiny is doubtful. Any way Buddhism is the opposite of the Hindunism when it comes to the core of the philosophy.. it could be considered as a Athiest religion. All other Abrahamic religions not even able to compare with Buddhism those are totaly different and roots driven to the bronze age. Unlike most of the other religions as a Buddhist you be a evolutionists , Scientist , rational person. It is a good thing with scientific advancements humans becoming more and more rational and force to look at the reality than the fantasies these religions suggesting. We are Homosapiens only around 200000 years old. Long way to go if we could survive in cosmos .. Chinese scholars traveling through the region between the 5th and 8th centuries, such as Faxian, Xuanzang, Yijing, Hui-sheng, and Sung-Yun, began to speak of a decline of the Buddhist Sangha in the Northwestern parts of Indian subcontinent, especially in the wake of the Hun invasion from central Asia in the 6th century CE.[4] Xuanzang wrote that numerous monasteries in north-western India had been reduced to ruins by the Huns.[4][18] The Hun ruler Mihirakula, who ruled from 515 CE in north-western region (modern Afghanistan, Pakistan and north India), suppressed Buddhism as well. He did this by destroying monasteries as far away as modern-day Prayagraj.[19] Yashodharman and Gupta Empire rulers, in and after about 532 CE, reversed Mihirakula's campaign and ended the Mihirakula era.[20][21] According to Peter Harvey, the religion recovered slowly from these invasions during the 7th century, with the "Buddhism of southern Pakistan remaining strong."[22] The reign of the Pala Dynasty (8th to 12th century) saw Buddhism in North India recover due to royal support from the Palas who supported various Buddhist centers like Nalanda. By the eleventh century, Pala rule had weakened, however.[22]

The temples were build with perfect accuracy that even Britishers couldn't answer some of the mystery behind the ancient temples. Wheels are carved out in sun temple thousands of years ago. The Kailasa temple is almost 1.5 times taller than the Acropolis in Greece and it has been carved out from a single rock(scientists couldn't find the rock that was cut in a 1000 km radius!) This culture has even written text on the science of Sex (Kamasutra), because they were very much progressive and brilliant. Ancient India Excelled I'm every walk of life be it science, Spirituality or physicality. But that doesn't mean that Today's India is the same as it were. Also, the deprecession of Human ability happens all over the world (It's a cycle) and you can't neglect that the people before you were not as great as the greatest of today. According to my research , India has lost so much after the Invasions basically due to cultural reforms and sanctions. You can criticize today's India but certainly need to educate yourself with little more History.

You missed mentioning one point: Bhudhism was born from Hinduism, Buddhism is part of Hinduism. Bhudha was a Hindu!
@johnhaller70177 жыл бұрын
Buddhism was caused through the abandonment of the preexisting, Brahmanism, Vedic teachings and so on, by the one who became the Buddha. He and many like him were dissatisfied with the dominant religions of the time and sought through their own investigations, of what else was on offer. There was a lot on offer, but the price of admission was the abandonment of your home life and all that this entailed. His exploration led the Buddha to formulate the way to the ending of Dukkha(suffering) and how to train oneself to achieve this, Nirvana. No more suffering. Buddhism,therefore is an entirely separate lineage to the later Hinduism. The idea of the Buddha being an Avatar of Vishnu was an entirely Hindu notion that occurred hundreds of years after The Buddha's lifetime and is not recognised by any earlier or later schools of Buddhism.

In Where ever Islamist went they destroyed these Buddha statues and slaughtered Buddhists. Later when they entered INDIA they followed same path of destruction of all the idols of Buddha as well as killing Buddhists and they aslot stated killing hindus and destroying temples. Dr. BR ambedkar written about this in his book. Brahmins were academics and were not for power. The local kings supported them and the temples, their rituals and management of associated schools, musicians, dancers, lands, kitchens, banks etc. Temples were the mainstays of trade too. Islam destroyed temples and with it all trade and economy of ancient India.

The Iranic Saka peoples originally inhabited Yarkand and Kashgar in ancient times, and were ruled by the Buddhist Saka Kingdom of Khotan when the first major Turkic incursions into the area began. The Saka Kings were still culturally-influenced by the Buddhist homeland of Northern India, with their rulers adopting Hindu names. The Buddhist entities of Khotan and Dunghuang (in present-day Gansu) had a tight-knit partnership, with intermarriage between Dunhuang and Khotan's rulers and Dunhuang's Mogao grottos and Buddhist temples being funded and sponsored by the Khotan royals, whose likenesses were drawn in the Mogao grottoes.[16] The rulers of Khotan were aware of the menace they faced since they arranged for the Mogao grottoes to paint a growing number of divine figures along with themselves.[16] By the time the Turkic Uyghur (Buddhist) and the Turkic Kara-Khanid (Muslim) invaded, Khotan was the only state in the area that had not come under Turkic rule.

Many people nowadays think of Buddhism as a separate religion from Hinduism. The truth is, Buddhism is a school of philosophy among hundreds of such schools that existed in ancient India, especially in the middle Ganga valley. Therefore within India and even outside of India Buddhism spread as a layer on top of the local gods and traditions without replacing them. We can clearly see that in SE Asia where it merged with the loc Hinduism, in Bactria with Hellenic religion, in Tibet with Bön, in the steppes with Tengriism and in Japan with Shintoism. It also took with it some Hindu deities and practices. A more correct comparison of Buddhism would therefore be with other schools of philosophy or monastic orders in India such as Advaita Vedanta, Dvaita Vendanta, Mimamsa, Sankhya, Vaisheshika, Jaina, Ajivika etc. Buddhism was the one that made it big outside of India, and is therefore seen as a religion in its own way, which it could be argued to be, but only outside of India. Within India it sat on top of a Hindu substrate. Not all of the ancient schools survived to the modern times and in most of India Buddhism was one of them.

Did Adi Shankara debate with Buddhists and defeated them? No, he didn't. There is not even a single script available that shows us proof of any debate between Shankara and any Buddhist. Only his critique of Buddhists is available in his commentary on Brahma Sutras, not the debate dialogues. Hindus says that Shankara went to Buddhist monasteries and defeated Buddhists throughout India, this claim sounds very childish and forced. Why is there no mention of the names of Buddhist monasteries where Shankara went? It was difficult to travel in those days, and Shankara traveled across India to defeat Buddhists leaving no proof behind?

There are no details on how and when Shankarachrya defeated a Buddhist monk. How did Buddha reject the Hinduisms Caste System? At the time of the Buddha the caste system was firmly established in India. According to this system, a person's position in society was determined from the time he was born and there was no way to change his lot in life. There were four castes, or classes, of people in society: The Brahmins or priests, who claimed to be the highest caste and the purest of peoples The warriors The merchants and traders The untouchables, who were considered the lowest class. They became workers and servants who did all the menial jobs, and were treated as slaves. The Buddha condemned the caste system, which he considered unjust. He pointed out that there existed wicked and cruel people as well as virtuous and kind people in every caste. Any person who had committed a crime would be punished accordingly by his karma no matter what caste he belonged to. He said a person may be considered to have come from a high or low caste according to his good and bad deeds. Therefore, according to the Buddha it is the good and bad actions of a person and not his birth that should determine his caste. The Buddha introduced the idea of placing a higher value on morality and the equality of people instead of on which family or caste a person is born into. This was also the first attempt to abolish discrimination and slavery in the history of mankind. The Buddha said: By birth one is not an outcaste, By birth one is not a Brahmin; By deeds alone one is an outcaste, By deeds alone one is a Brahmin

So there's a puzzle here - Buddhist decline coincided with decentralization of authority, but the mechanism is not so clear. I'd suggest that decentralization would have led to competition between many smaller polities, and that this would provide an opening for non-orthodox religions to gain patronage from the leaders of each of the smaller states. Decentralization would tend, then, to give rise to more religious diversity.

Why do Western people always are hell bent on depicting Vedic Dharma and Bauddh Dharma as seperate distinctive religions ? India never had seperate closed religions , we had Dharma and there are no ' ISMs' in Dharma . The word used in India for seperate traditions was and still is ' Matta' or opinion . Vedanta aka. Hinduism and Buddhism are not seperate religions in the western sense of the word but are what they were popularly known in India as - ' Dharma Mattas ' meaning opinions on Dharma ...They are opinions on the establishment of Dharma by various masters and Dharma Mattas also include Jain and Sikkh ...Our principal error, which we continue to make to this day was in not making the distinction between dharma and organized religion. How can that which is cosmic, and thus, limitless ever be compartmentalized and limited in boundaries? How can something which evolved through interpretation by free-will of millions of people ever be handed down in the form of a limited doctrine ideology or value system? dharma shunned all attempts at strait-jacketing. Western culture, on the other hand, was a universe of many strait-jackets..Cant believe that you act all preachy and yet do not even care to do proper homework

I dont think Buddha presented his teachings as a ' counter' Vedic Matta . On several places Gautama had praised Vedic Teachings . He was against social evils but not Vedanta ...His teachings are different but are not completely opposite to Vedic Matta .Yes philosophically differences exist BUT the similarities are far more. Like I said these are just Mattas or opinions and not closed religions like Islam and Christianity . Vedanta and Buddhism might disagree with each other on several topics but thay always agreed on the importance of Dharma . The Dharma Paramparas of India, ( Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism ) and also other Eastern ways of life emphasized the right laws of living and did not insist on fierce loyalties to any particular dogma. They are not religions in the English dictionary sense of the term.Buddhists, Jains and Hindus may disagree philosophically on the description of ultimate reality, not only with each other but among themselves, but that does not require abandoning dharma

Buddhism is atheist. Buddha neglected god thing. He said not to worship man made hindu gods. He said not to follow castism, suppress lower caste, "lower caste" means lower level people, which hurts lower caste self respect, And in ur vedas it's written that earth is flat, immovable, and sun revolves are earth. Buddhists don't even give a damn on these vedas. Google is better than your vedas.
@dharmicindia63254 жыл бұрын
The decline of Buddhism has been attributed to various factors, especially the regionalisation of India after the end of the Gupta Empire (320-650 CE), which led to the loss of patronage and donations as Indian dynasties turned to the services of Hindu Brahmins. Another factor was invasions of north India by various groups such as Huns, Turco-Mongols and Persians and subsequent destruction of Buddhist institutions such as Nalanda and religious persecutions.[4] Religious competition with Hinduism and later Islam were also important factors. Islamization of Bengal and demolitions of Nalanda, Vikramasila and Odantapuri by Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji, a general of the Delhi Sultanate are thought to have severely weakened the practice of Buddhism in East India.[5]

Later, however, the attitude of the Alchons towards Buddhism is reported to have been negative. Mihirakula in particular is remembered by Buddhist sources to have been a "terrible persecutor of their religion" in Gandhara in northern Pakistan.[82] During his reign, over one thousand Buddhist monasteries throughout Gandhara are said to have been destroyed.[83] In particular, the writings of Chinese monk Xuanzang from 630 CE explained that Mihirakula ordered the destruction of Buddhism and the expulsion of monks.[32]:162 Indeed, the Buddhist art of Gandhara, in particular Greco-Buddhist art, becomes essentially extinct around that period. When Xuanzang visited northwestern India in c. 630 CE, he reported that Buddhism had drastically declined, and that most of the monasteries were deserted and left in ruins.[84] Although the Guptas were traditionally a Brahmanical dynasty,[85] around the period of the invasions of the Alchon the Gupta rulers had apparently been favouring Buddhism. According to contemporary writer Paramartha, Mihirakula's supposed nemesis Narasimhagupta Baladitya was brought up under the influence of the Mahayanist philosopher Vasubandhu.[85] He built a sangharama at Nalanda and a 300 ft (91 m) high vihara with a Buddha statue within which, according to Xuanzang, resembled the "great Vihara built under the Bodhi tree". According to the Manjushrimulakalpa (c. 800 CE), king Narasimhsagupta became a Buddhist monk, and left the world through meditation (Dhyana).[85] Xuanzang also noted that Narasimhagupta Baladitya's son Vajra, who also commissioned a sangharama, "possessed a heart firm in faith".[86]:45[87]:330 The 12th century Kashmiri historian Kalhana also painted a dreary picture of Mihirakula's cruelty, as well as his persecution of the Buddhist faith: Solar symbolism Solar symbol on the coinage of Toramana. Khingila with solar symbol. Alchon king with small male figure wearing solar nimbus. "In him, the northern region brought forth, as it were, another god of death, bent in rivalry to surpass... Yama (the god of death residing in the southern regions). People knew of his approach by noticing the vultures, crows and other birds flying ahead eager to feed on those who were being slain within his army's reach. The royal Vetala (demon) was day and night surrounded by thousands of murdered human beings, even in his pleasure houses. This terrible enemy of mankind had no pity for children, no compassion for women, no respect for the aged" - 12th century Kashmiri historian Kalhana[72]

my impression is that hindus tolerate buddhism. But how many Indians are truly modern in this sense....

The Alchon invasions, although only spanning a few decades, had long term effects on India, and in a sense brought an end to the middle kingdoms of India.[72] Soon after the invasions, the Gupta Empire, already weakened by these invasions and the rise of local rulers, ended as well.[79]:221 Following the invasions, northern India was left in disarray, with numerous smaller Indian powers emerging after the crumbling of the Guptas.[93] The Huna invasions are said to have seriously damaged India's trade with Europe and Central Asia,[72] particularly Indo-Roman trade relations, which the Gupta Empire had greatly benefited from. The Guptas had been exporting numerous luxury products such as silk, leather goods, fur, iron products, ivory, pearl and pepper from centers such as Nasik, Paithan, Pataliputra and Benares. The Huna invasion probably disrupted these trade relations and the tax revenues that came with them.[94] Furthermore, Indian urban culture was left in decline, and Buddhism, gravely weakened by the destruction of monasteries and the killing of monks, started to collapse.[72] Great centers of learning were destroyed, such as the city of Taxila, bringing cultural regression.[72] During their rule of 60 years, the Alchons are said to have altered the hierarchy of ruling families and the Indian caste system. On the artistic side however, the Alchon Huns may have played a role, just like the Western Satraps centuries before them, in helping spread the art of Gandhara to the western Deccan region.[95]
