With the arrival of Harley Davidson X440 and Bajaj-Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, the competition in the 350-400cc segment is heating up. Though there are several players already in this space, it is still dominated by Royal Enfield alone. Whether these new motorcycles will be able to pose a threat to RE or fail like Jawa, Yezdi, Honda, Benelli, TVS etc, we share our opinion on this in the latest episode of Cartalaap.

I DONT THINK SO...they will be expensive and frankly their is no appeal for it in bharat and not india , urban india -the aspirational india may buy it , but bharat part of india the rural part -bullet still is aspirational and wahan numbers lana mushkil hai . plus for hero and bajaj ,,they wont push these for bharat , for simple reason -volumes and their market domination there plus premium for a bike jiske service and spare costs ka expensive hona pakka hai, and again bullet(RE) is everywhere, ye brands kewal urban india tak hi rahegi at best

Why I bought classic 350 last year, simple reason it was a dream bike and I had to buy it nothing else even it feelscalm and refreshingwhen I drive it, I think all those people who were not able to buy because financial conditions are now somewhat stable and buying their dream bikes.😊 India is growing and so are the people.

Sir features ka bhi toh comparison hona chahiye na! What you get more on Speed 400 is: About 50 cc extra, About 7NM or torque extra, About 13 BHP or power extra, Ride by wire, Slipper clutch, Grippier tyres, USD BPF suspension at front, Momo shock at the rear, Bigger disk at the front, Better instrument console with more info. I guess all of this to be added on the Hunter would cost about 60-70k, won't it?

Point 1 . RE has huge network for service. Point 2 . As u discussed, RE market is outside the tier 1 cities. This two factors alone can defeat Harleys and Triumphs...

I don't think a guy buying Ktm 390 or upcoming triumph cousins will feel comfortable in an urban or rural environment because of either the suspension or high revving nature of engine. The name of game is torque and tractability. I bet any manufacturer to get these together as beautifully as royal Enfield.

​@@debargharoy2492don't talk naively. Look at the torq curve. 37 is peak torq at 6500 rpm. However the torq curve is very flat across the revv range. It will still produce more torque at 2000 rpm than any RE 350. Plus overall a much lesser weight and better cycle parts will make it a better deal. On top of it they are providing a liquid cool engine. Even if it is 50 to 70 k more it's still much more worthy.

Mojo was a good product with sweet sounding twin exhausts, Pirelli rubbers and good seating position but poor marketing, high price, and dominance of RE didn't let it rise.

Very well said about the price factor...when youre getting a 350cc for 2-2.5 lacs why would you spend 3.5 -4 lacs for a 400cc...when you would get a twin 650cc for that price.

@@blrmotorcyclesinc. yes but its still under the triumph brand and will be available at Triumph dealerships. I am sure Triumph wont lend its name to a sub standard product. The build, fit and finish would be top notch and eventually thats all that matters. You see you dont expect too much from a single cylinder 400cc engine. This is more of a lifestyle product, the pride in owning a triumph, rather than a proper enthusiast product. The harley launched yesterday as such a killer price tag. So no harm in having premium brands around us that are so damn affordable 🙂🙌

Triumph is not having the legacy? Please do a research before podcast, triumph is the same company which ruled the twin cylinder bikes with bonneville in 50, 60 and 70’s, and RE India is still offering a bike made as a reverse engineered bike from current and one gen old bonnie as 650 twins, British bikes were doing 45-50 HP 60 years ago including RE’s own(uk) interceptor 750 and constellation, so basically current RE bikes are 60 year tech sold as latest and greatest, hopefully few RE guys must have heard these names.

Triumph (900cc) which I ride was much much much comfortable than RE 650. I'm 5'6" avaeagre built now, above 45. And I found RE650 is too heavy and not comfortable. But Triumph was just awesome. It was imported bike I believe. I bought my first bike in 1997 was RE350 Diesel. Was giving 70Kms/Ltrs. But sold in 2003 as very noisy and extreme vibrations. But i miss it today again 😅

RE has no sir/per of weight management. RE 650 feels like a big cylinder. Thats it.

REs are very heavy as you said... It's a big drawback.. Even this is the same reason i am thinking of moving away from RE and infact their service sucks.. triumph 400 is lot lighter.. Will want and see for service costs and feed back for couple of months

I agree that RE bikes are good but I fee they are underpowered for a 350 cc engine , where in the cruising speeds are limited to maybe 80-100 . I think The target audience for triumph and Harley are probably the ones buying duke 390 or interceptor ,continental gt . And moreover we should be happy to see such a healthy competition in the market , so that we can expect better quality products in the future .😊

Just today I had a conversation with the executive of Triumph when I inquired about the availability of the newly launched 400 series, she said it will be available in the Triumph dealership only, not in Bajaj dealerships. Maybe this will impact the sale negatively. 😢

Then it'll be same as Honda's Highness. Only selling at selected store won't help the brands crack RE's market. RE is available in each and every corner. People don't have to travel 50km for servicing! That's why people buy RE!

Well it means it will never get here. RE were not here until ? 10 years ago and now place is full of Enfield. Marketing and availability and service means tgey don't have to compete in most of India. Bajaj here dideven know how to service Dominar.

I agree with your statement that RE is build on the buyers on tier 2 cities. Exactly the issue with other brands. Just think about Honda. Highness is a good bike and I enjoyed more than the Meteor and Classic. But for servicing I've to travel 50km. But RE is in my town. Jawa-Yezdi service center is like 75km away. But RE showrooms and service centers are in every 10-20km. If the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 are available at Bajaj dealership then it's gonna hit, but if it's going to be at Triumph dealership then it's gonna suffer the same fate as Honda's bigwing bikes.

Honda highness is way better than RE, it is just RE is given too much imp in Indian market which is shit thinking of people. RE is overrated now compared to many bikes in market now. Earlier bikes were not so cheap compared to nowadays and options were less.

I had used Classic 350 & Classic 350 & now using Honda CB 350. I can say that quality wise CB 350 is quite ahead, also in refinement, comfort & handling. Other hand Classics r all about feelings. U sat as king on it. So in short, heart says RE & mind says CB.

@@rudraansharohra I didn't find any wobbling issue in my bike. May be its ur bike specific only. And yes, Honda messed up its 5th gear ratio. Its too tall to run in below 60 kmph speed. Beyond 65-70 kmph speed, it runs like smoothly again. The Achilles hill is top gear in 55-65 speed range.

Harley to India mein hai nhi to logon ka trust nhi hga utna uss pr But triumph se thda bhut ho skta h but not like completely outsell krdegi RE ko. After sales services are going to be pricier considering the triumph brand name luxury ke name pr to lenge hi paise. Also the pricing going to be a big decider.

I think you like RE naturally so as it is more successful here. But what triumph and HD are looking more stylish and look close to their existing product line. Triumph one is looking lighter. But price and service will decide everything.

Asia mein south east mein bhi RE bahut famous hote jaa raha hai shayad aapko pata nahi. Not only India China South East Asian country mein bhi sales badhne lagi hai kaafi saare wahan ke youtubers video bana rahe hain iska.

Be farsighted! Check in 2024 RE Local sales going down continuously but only one jump in April. Export sales are going down continuously means foreign countries don’t like it anymore even with sweet pricing. Indian have better options and RE is overpriced Incase of Honda 350 or TVS Ronin.

Can you explain where you see the brand “Royal Enfield” in future??? are they going to shift with electric or they will go with flex fuel or fully run ethanol bikes ??

In the era of infrastructure and technology advancement, India has now good expressway almost everywhere. Since sedans are more comfortable than SUV in highway cruising. So why people not buying sedans anymore, also automakers are not interested in manufacturing sedans anymore. Please discuss this topic in next podcast.

I own a meteor 350 fireball yellow and a yezdi roadster sin silver, i ride both of them on daily basis, to be honest i like my yezdi a lot more than meteor. Infact the service of yezdi is far better than RE's service.

It will definitely not “kill” royal enfield but it will definitely affect their market cap. Triumph and Harley are premium brands that a lot of people aspired to own one day and now they can. Its a great time to be alive as a bike enthusiast watching these bikes enter our markets. It will create even more competition which is great as a customer. People always complain about the price but if you want cheap bikes, you get low quality thats it. Spending extra and getting something premium is worth it.

Two things for which RE always win in rulling over two wheeler market in India is price and it's more number of showroom and services. Whichever bike come price is one of the main factor . So I don't think RE can be beatable

Thanks for the constructive discussion. Another point I would like to add is the unparallel service network of RE. From Ladakh to Kanyakumari. We understand quality, finish, value for money products by both Triumph & Harley. But what about the service network?. Are Bajaj & Hero going to cater the service for these brands?. Because this is a major factor for RE for its overwhelming success. They are able to connect with their customers easily compared to Honda, Yezdi, Jawa etc. Hope these collaborations have ticked this box to give a strong challenge for RE

I think Royal Enfield has a very good sales and service network across India even some of the local mechanic are good in Royal Enfield that's why Royal Enfield has very good sales number. On the other hand Honda only sell their 350 segment bikes in big cities and Jawa and Yezdi also. My house is 200 km far from these showroom and Royal Enfield are 4 km, 35km, 50km far from my house so why should i go for 200 km to buy a bike and also service

Nice session well triumph harley is for audience already targetting 3 to 4 lac price bracket . Both brands have everything to disrupt affordable premium legacy bike market in tier 1,2,3 etc. Cities. Service backup from bajaj, hero will ensure affordable parts and service.

Harleys new 400 doesn’t look that great but speed 400 is hot super hot . Honda , mojo ,Jawa yezdi dominor all these have failed . But speed 400 has everything going right for it only concerned is pricing if its priced at 2.5 lakhs then for sure it will sell more than re . People will sell their re and buy speed 400

For youngsters chotay bachoo Royal Enfield hunter vs Triumph speed 400 definitely go with Triumph....but for men Royal Enfield Bullet....sorry no comparison its emotion....

HD and Triumph both have legacy, their bikes are better than RE too but cost is a major issue and service network is a single major tool by which RE may kill others, as Hero and Bajaj will suppose to open 100 special show room/service centre for specially these 2 bikes. RE has already been completed to build up a giant dealership network only challenge is if they Hera & Bajaj can use their regular service centre network

Yes, Mister LAL copied the Harley marketing (the bike is more a brand boutique and a private club). But the real killer of RE in my sense is Triumph 400 and 400x (in the 350 & 650cc RE segment). Triumph 400 is light (170kg), has very good price, eco (3.3L/100), blowing speed of 165km/h., Good looks, spirit & reliability. RE like Harley sells in the West which is now an economically dead area, opting for electric motors. RE must reorient its market or it will die.

If Triumph wants to stay for long time they have to make it affordable as simple as it sound . More bike on road more part sales More service more aspiration and more sales If triumph makes it pricey than re then it will not creat the market for itself I already gave my saved money for Royal Enfield to Ola s1. Royal Enfield is getting greedy by constantly increasing the price . Re is no more Value for money preposition .

Sir mere pass Jawa Bobber aur Meteor 350 dono hai… Bobber me quick gear shift ke alawe har mamle me Meteor se better lagti hai… jo mujhe lagta hai ye HP:Torque ka difference lagta hai… Agar Jawa ka Torque aur zyada ho jaye to ye problem bhi khatam ho jaye.

People will never understand Jawa / Yezdi engines. Both engines are way better than RE engines. Only thing is low end tourque is good in RE. Anyways, might be Jawa / Yezdi will take time as RE took in past to get settle in the market.

Fantastic knowledge & insights. RE has got it right interms of creating characterful bikes & I have seen most RE owners are emotionally driven than having a practical mindset. I own adventure 390 2022 model. Really hope the after sales should not take a drastic hit because of himalayan 450. I am confident enough atleast KTM gets its own market share & spot for the unique character traits that ktm bikes offer.

They can not beat RE totally but they can snatch some sales of theirs. I bought Hness due to arrogant behavior of dealer 3 year ago, My freind bought it too 2 week ago and other bought KTM 390 after cancelling Meteor 650 he booked it in january end but RE failed to deliver till june. Late delivery (3 to 6 month of waiting period) is too much for eager customers.

If the pricing is just Right say 2.45ex & 2.75Ex then Triumph will definitely eat some RE shares. But pratically speaking those bikes ares targeted towards upcoming REs 450CC bikes & these bikes are more threat to KTM/ Husqvarna & Jawa rather then REs.

I think someone should make a review on this video. How they are biased about RE, how they have missed most the important parts etc. Now a days most of the reviews are biased with RE, no one talks about RE quality even after too many years and heating issues etc.

These bikes are good especially triumph But as i am using 2011 classic 350 which is best bike in terms of torque output Look and retro feel Now i will upgrade to 650 twin series because of dual cylinder and massive torque output and especially look❤️

Avenger 220 cruise is best product that is giving value for money. It is offering an adequate engine with comfort, mileage, and cruiser styling. Looks is matter of personal preference, but I like its looks. Better product then classic 350

When Honda Highness came out for the first time, Royal Enfield didn't have any updated modern bikes yet. Back then, I literally said, Royal Enfield is gonna be totally ignored by everyone and will go for the highness because RE engines are slow and has so much of vibration compared to the new Honda" and then boom, suddenly within just couple of days Royal Enfield came up with the teasers and advertisements of Meteor 350 with the new and smooth J series motor which was faster than before and had no vibration. And when Honda had hoped to be the RE killer, even we thought it could, but RE suddenly hit everyone with the new launch and till today they have been coming up with new bikes every year with the new Himalayan 450 recently launched. And this is how RE destroys everything that comes in its way to become it's killer, and they have been successful so far and will be in the future. Cause since Honda highness, RE started with Meteor, Scram 411, then updates of the old 650 twins, then the super meteor, then the Shotgun, and recently the Himalayan 450 and now Guerrilla on the way as upcoming bikes. Dam RE is the legend.

RE ek esa brand hai jo jamin se juda huaa hai... Harek gali muhalle me isaka repairing ho jata h. Open market me isake parts easy available hai. Bas yahi kafi hai in new bikes ko competition se out karne k liye😂😂. RE ka ek Die hard fan following hai jisaka kuch nahi kiya jaa sakta❤❤❤

Success of HD 440X will also depend on how they market it. Challenging RE and calling names won’t work, they’ll have to build their own brand image and of course make the bike readily available in hinterland.
